So how do we ‘spiff up’ a potentially hum-drum meeting like a Club Assembly?

Come-To-Order-Jack-KellyI am sure  LARC President after LARC President has mulled this thought over and over.  Here’s a meeting that has to compete with State Senator Jerry Hill, Steven Yvaska on the value of antiques, The Future of Online Education, Keena Turner and the 49er’s, pictures of the universe and other exciting programs we have had so far this Rotary Year.

Well, how about giving everyone a glass tiddlywink of questionable color to match a colored-coded seating chart to direct one to a particular table for the day.  Well, that would have worked, except everyone coming in had an excuse to change the color to of their drawn tiddlywink to their ‘regular’ table.  (I included, well, because I have a hard time hearing from some places).

President Jack Kelly and PE Kendra GjersethThen there was the Bingo game.  That made sense to the older crowd.  At least they had played it before.  But have to give kudos to PE KENDRA and President JACK for at least trying to inject a bit of fun to a typically dry meeting.  It worked….  Sure it did!

We were greeted today by KIRK MAHNCKE, STAN SCARDINO and Carol Garsden.

Song-Ron-Stefani Thought-Pat-Gray

PP JOE RENATI (Cioppino Chef Extraordinaire) led the pledge, and PAT GRAY had a New Year’s Resolution Thought for the day, and Song master, RON STEFANI lead us in “Auld Lang Syne, with a twist, remembering those Los Altos Rotarians who died over the past year (or so):

PE KENDRA GJERSETH had us introduce guests (there were no visiting Rotarians).  PP DENNIS YOUNG, PP BOB ADAMS and President JACK KELLY each had one.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  JUDY OTT sent around a card for PP DICK DUHRING who is in the hospital Announce-Judy-Ottwith a so-far undiagnosed ailment.  Get well Dick.  We need your perspicacity, particularly finding the humor in everyday things.

Announce-Barbara-SmallBARBARA SMALL announced an upcoming Los Altos High School HAITI SOLIDARITY CLUB silent auction fundraiser for SOPUDEP, sister school in Haiti to be held on Sunday, January 26th 2 to 4:30 PM at 1st and Main.  They are looking for silent auction items, and donations.

BARBARA also thanked STEVE POMEROY for putting a “link to donation” button on our website.  You can also contact Barbara directly for more information.  Like where at 1st and Main.  There is a bar, a gas station, an office building under construction and a vacant health foods store.  My guess is the Bar, First and Main!

Announce-Carol-GarstenCAROL GARSTEN announced the PR Committee is meeting two Thursdays from today, on Jan. 23rd at 11 at our meeting place, the Garden House.  Please come if you want to be part of this committee.

Announce-Donna-VernaDONNA VERNA announced a planning meeting for the upcoming Fine Art in the Park  NEXT Thursday before the meeting, at 11:30 Garden House.  Here is your chance to be on the most fun LARC committee there is!

Blue-Badge-Diana-Neuman-Marlene-McAllister-Jack-KellyRED TO BLUE- DIANA NEIMAN received her Blue Badge today, completing all the requirements for Blue.  Her sponsor is none other than Membership Director, JEAN (John) MORDO who was otherwise busy in Hawaii, so President JACK did the honors of presenting Diana with her well-earned Blue Badge. Congratulations, DIANA.

This email came in from Doreen Bracamontes of Alta Vista High School:

Dear Community Partners,

Hello and Happy New Year!  As you may know, Alta Vista High School has an advisory program on campus; this is our sixth year of implementation. The purpose of the advisory program is to help facilitate stronger connections between students and their teachers, school, and community so that each student is better prepared for high school graduation and beyond.

Senior advisory is designed to spend time focusing on preparation for both community college and the workforce. During our recent job skills unit, students prepared resumes and cover letters, as well as reviewed helpful interviews tips. Now, we need to partner with interested community members like you. Please help us with a culminating activity for our students' job unit.

On Friday, January 31, 2014 between 9:00 A.M. and 1:05 P.M., we are conducting mock interviews and need volunteers to fill the role of an interviewer. Our objective is to provide students with an opportunity to practice their interview skills with knowledgeable adults before they are in actual interview situations. We would love to have you help interview students for all or part of the time on the 31st. We know that having professionals from the community who care about our students will make this day more meaningful and successful for them. Students report that Mock Interview Day is the most helpful and relevant experience that we offer because they gain useful and practical information about their skills.

When you arrive the day of the mock interviews, you will receive interview questions to use during the interview sessions and an evaluation form to provide constructive feedback for each student. The questions and evaluation form will be sent out in advance to confirmed volunteers.

If you are interested and available to participate for all or part of the time, please contact Doreen Bracamontes at
doreen.bracamontes@mvla.netdoreen.bracamontes@mvla.net> or call (650) 691-2433 by January 24, 2014. Your time and dedication to Alta Vista High School and our students is very much appreciated. This will be the sixth year that mentors like you have helped us perform this very successful program. Community volunteers are invaluable assets to our school community as well as in the lives of our students. Your time on Mock Interview Day provides a tremendous service in our effort to prepare students for workforce entry.

Sincerely,

Doreen Bracamontes

10 MINUTE TALK – SHELLEY EMERSON
10-Minute-Shelley-EmersonShelley is the oldest girl of 6 siblings.  Her Mother taught high school.  Her father worked for Standard Oil.  She graduated from the UC system, Davis, Berkeley, and Santa Clara Law.  She has held a number of jobs, including a bond firm, City of San Jose, General Counsel of San Lorenzo, and the City of Mountain View. During her working days, she practiced public agency law.  She is now retired.  She is also a big baseball fan.  Her sponsor is KATHY BERRY.

A FINE FINE TIME

Fine-Dennis-YoungPP DENNIS YOUNG took the gavel to inflict some financial pain on the group.  By my count, he got into 21 member’s pockets.  About the most pitiful was PEN JERRY MOISON, looking for sympathy with a bashed head.  He forgot to duck, as he stepped out of his moving car which was going backwards with or without him.  He also forgot to put the brakes on.  Apparently all’s well that ends well and he lived to tell us the story and pay the fine.

THE AFOREMENTIONED EXCITING PROGRAM FOR TODAY
Because a complete list of slides are on our web site are viewable at:
http:www.losaltosrotary.org/2013-2014/clubassembly-2.docx  I will not relist all the salient points but here are a few teasers:

JEAN MORDO Director of Membership, (surfing in Hawaii) sent via dolphin, the fact that since July 1, 2012 we have 18 new members.

Operations-Steve-PomeroySTEVE POMEROY Director of Operations pointed out the new sound system, and how it has been tweaked with new mikes (podium) an equalizer, and sound baffles on the wall.

STEVE also pointed out that we are going to reestablish the Website Committee, so anyone who has an interest in that, particularly those with web experience, should contact STEVE, MATT CABOT or DAVE SNOW.

PAUL SCHUTZ, Director of Community Service pointed out the accomplishments in that area as:

Youth-Karen-GregarusYouth Services Director KAREN GREGURAS in her very professional “teacher mode” quickly enumerated her talking points.  She mentioned that there had been a noted increase in Interact interest and for Camp RYLA over last year.

International-Frank-VerlotFRANK VERLOT Director of International Services pointed out the various programs that they have going.  A lot of them are directed to Nepal, due to the many years of fine work of ALLART LIGTENBERG on the scene, who seems to have bought a plot of land there to build a second home.
