Ten Minute Talk:
Ten_Minute_Talk_Mark_Rogge
MARK ROGGE was born and grew up in Elmhurst, Illinois.  He became the youngest member of the drum and bugle corp in Elmhurst.  He went to work early in life at the local Holiday Inn to help supplement his family’s income.  At age 18 he joined the Elmhurst Police Department.  Mark attended college in Redding, California, where his brother lived.  While there he opened a teen disco, because he wasn’t old enough to get into a regular disco.  Mark then moved back to Illinois, where he went to work for Illinois Public Works.  But he missed California, and when he had the chance, Mark moved back to California in San Jose, where he worked for San Jose State.  Mark was instrumental in the restoration of the Shoreline Parklands and Rengstorff House.  He also worked on the Mountain View Library, Adobe Building Restoration; Milpitas Light Rail, City Hall, Veterans Memorial, the Public Library and associated parking garage.  Mark also worked on the Murphy Avenue development project in Sunnyvale.  Mark likes his work and especially likes to build bridges.  Mark is now retired and looking forward to building bridges with other members of Rotary.

President_Jack_Kelly_manages_the_meeting President JACK KELLY shared with the Club photos of Allart from Nepal.  The first photo showed Allart being blessed by a local Nepalese woman.  There were photos of the solar cooker, the chairman of a Nepalese company that makes chimneys for the fireplaces that burn the pressed briquets, photos of the Rotary Club meeting in Patan Dubar and Lalitpur; Allart working on a Global Grant; cooking stoves fumes tester; and election day in Patan Dubar.

Presentation:
Speaker_intro_Lina_Broydo
LINA BROYDO introduced WYLIE HAUSAM.  Wiley Hausam joined Stanford University in February. He is a presenter of theater, dance, music and opera, a creative consultant, theater producer, teacher, and manager of performing arts facilities.  For many years, Hausam was based in New York City. During the 1990s, he was an associate producer of four musicals and plays on Broadway, which received 17 Tony Award nominations and 4 Tony Awards.  Since 2002, he has worked in higher education. Hausam graduated from the School of Music at Northwestern University and studied business at Kellogg Graduate School of Management there. At Columbia University, he studied philosophy of art. He is honored to be have been selected by Stanford to lead the opening of the Bing Concert Hall and the launch of Stanford Live.

Speaker_Wiley_HausamThe Bing Concert Hall has 360 degree vineyard style seating.  There are 842 seats, which is a small venue in the performing arts world for a concert hall.  Wylie previewed for us the list of upcoming performances.  Wylie explained that performances at Bing are for the communities surrounding Stanford.  This past year was the first full year of performances.  They are going to expand to including summer performances.  Acoustics at the hall are incredibly sensitive and they are working to moderate for that.  When subscriptions went on sale in May, they sold out 20 shows on subscription alone, which is unusual.  The Bing Center has exceeded the projections for the first four years of the business plan.  They are working on how to make more tickets available to the community.  One option is that they ask subscribers a few days before an event if they are not going to attend, to please turn in their tickets to be offered to the community.  In the coming year the Center will also expand from musical concerts to multidisciplinary performances around the Stanford Campus.  The goal of Bing Center is to become the leading presenter of performing arts in the U.S. Higher Education world.
