Greeters Jerry Tomanek, Louis Borel and Allart Ligtenberg

President Jack KellyAnticipation as a concept is becoming increasingly foreign to people today.  But today’s meeting was a great example of Anticipation. It was everywhere.

What was it that Professor Harold Hill said?  Well, I forgot, but he said something really profound about the value of anticipation and the wait for the trombones and uniforms.

But on to the satisfaction of our anticipation.  We were greeted by JERRY TOMANEK, LOUIS BOREL, and ALLART LIGTENBERG.

Alison SalisburyOur Thought for the Day was shared by ALISON SALISBURY.

Barbara SmallShe was followed by a very creative and courageous BARBARA SMALL, who led us in a delightful round which required people to “chew gum and walk at the same time.”  Some of us sang on cue - sort of, and the rest of us whistled - sort of on cue as well.  It was definitely fun.

We had 4 visiting Rotarians, and 10 guests.   I am sure all of them thought the same thing, “we are the best Rotary Club in the world.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  There were plenty of announcements.  And, for a change, I think I got them all:

PE Kendra GjersethPPE KENDRA GJERSETH announced the website training session that, by the time you read it here, has already happened.  But just for thoroughness sake, I will give you the details.  This Monday, 8/12 from 11:30 to 1PM she will be conducting a training session to learn about the new Committee Module from Clubrunner.  It will be (was) held at the Krause Center for Innovation at Foothill College.  I am sure it went well.  It did go well.  We had about 30 members attend to learn about the the new Committee Module.  Thanks KENDRA.

Marlis_McAllister Mark_RoggeMARLIS MCALLISTER and (Red Badger) MARK ROGGE said to save the date, October 10th, when there will be a Red Badge Auction.  More will be known as we get closer to the date.

Judy_OttJUDY OTT mentioned that SANDIE WHIPPLE’S husband, Art, was in the hospital suffering from complications from a kidney stone.  As you read this, Art is out of the hospital and back at work.  What a guy!

Ron StefaniRON STEFANI passed around a signup sheet for song leaders.  This may be more difficult now that BARBARA SMALL has raised the bar.  But you could take it as a challenge.

Harry PriceHARRY PRICE announced the End of Summer Soiree to be held and the home of FRANK and Shari ELMER, 132 North Gordon Way, Los Altos on Friday, August 23rd, 6 to 8:30 PM. This is a great way to join together for big laughs and engaging conversation in a casual setting.  Please bring a bottle of wine, or beverage of your choice, and an appetizer to share.

Gary_Waldeck_and_Jerry_TomanekJERRY TOMANEK and GARY WALDECK jointly announced the deadline for changes to your photograph or membership information in the handbook is August 15.  See JERRY to have an updated picture for the handbook.  Log on to the website to change your personal information.  All of this must be done by the 15th, which is this coming Thursday.

Julie_RoseJULIE ROSE, as Chamber liaison, announced an important meeting this coming Thursday, August 15th at the Los Altos City Council Chambers.  There, David Chase will discuss and answer questions small businesses have about the California Health Benefit Exchange, how it works, and how small businesses will be affected by the Affordable Health Care Act.

David_SmithDAVID SMITH gave a quick plug for the Library tax Renewal.  You all should have gotten your ballots in the mail.  You need to return them now.

Donna_VernaDONNA VERNA reminded everyone about the “Bloomers for Jack” program currently going on in our club.  She mentioned that new underwear, socks and cash are all accepted.  This coming Thursday, a basket will be passed around for the cash donations.  These donations, in case you live under a rock, are for the homeless, and a project of the District 5170 Governor’s spouse.  These donations will be delivered at the District Governor’s visit on September 19th.
President JACK announced that the excess proceeds from our Annual Golf Day would be handed to our Rotary AIDS Project.   The amount was $418.

And from an email from CHAC:

CONTINUING CELEBRATION OF BOO BUE’S LIFE
Dick_Henning
President JACK’s theme this year is communication.  He mentioned that BOO BUE was a consummate communicator.  He would often demonstrate the value of a strong memory by wowing the audience with his skills by knowing everyone’s name, able to recite articles from Time Magazines just by being given the page number.  He used a method called “memory stacking.”
PP DICK HENNING then came up to the lectern and spoke about how BOO had influenced his life as well.  One of the things he said was that he never heard BOO speak ill of anyone.  He never complained about people.  Boy.  A lesson we all (particularly me) should take to heart.  I never realized how much I seemed to be doing that until I heard PP DICK say those words….  Enough confessions.

Rick_GlazeFine Master, wwith the hat to prove it, RICK GLAZE took to the mike to quiz us on our knowledge of the market.  Fortunately for us all, most of the time was taken up by volunteers who had anniversaries, extra briefs or boxers to share, retiring, etc.

President_Jack_KellyOne thing I definitely did miss was the presentation to or from the Vietnam Resource Center. I think it was from the 63rd Support Wing to the Resource Center at Foothill.  I know a plaque was involved, but that is about it.

PROGRAM

Keener_TurnerEx-49er Linebacker, Keena Turner entertained us with his charm and wit.  While he is most noted for his 5 Super Bowl Championships with the 49ers, he is entering his sixth season as the Vice President of Football Affairs with the 49ers.

He started out with an apology about not being THE Tina Turner but Keena Turner.  He went on to both entertain and enlighten the group about the 49ers organization.

During his talk, Turner spoke at length about the new 49er Stadium and the new 25,000 square foot Hall of Fame Museum that will be housed there.  He said that every inductee will have a life size replica in the Hall.  Someone asked him if they would be made of wax. He said no, they would be made of something between wax and gold.

When asked about this coming season, after coming off a heart-wrenching loss at last year’s Super Bowl, Mr. Turner said he expected the team to show very well.  He said that they have a great group of guys with 3 first-round picks, and a very experienced team.  He said that the Defense and Secondary has been an issue in the preseason, but that he expected those problems to be resolved.
Keena Turner

He was asked about the future of football, with many families having major concerns about injuries, and the long term effects of concussions, knee injuries etc.  Turner said his family is currently addressing that same issue with his 8th grade son.   However, he said that it really comes down to the coach, and his staff.  Learning how to hit, and be hit, and knowing when to sideline players because of injuries.   He didn’t feel that football was any more dangerous than it was 20 years ago.  Better equipment, better training on and off the field addresses these concerns.

When someone asked about all the negative press the NFL was getting because of the legal problems current NFL players are finding themselves, Turner said that some of the legal problems absolutely cannot be condoned.  No excuse.  Nothing.  However, he said to remember that many of these young men are in their mid-twenties to early thirties.  Young people do dumb things.  He said he has to remind himself he is now 54, and not 22.  Young men just don’t have the same maturity as a 54.

Another person asked about all the piercing and tattooing going on in the league today.  Turner said, he didn’t understand a lot of it, but then he was 54.
Keena Turner at Los Altos Rotary Club

Finally, someone asked him “What makes a winning team?”   Turner answered the question philosophically.  He reminded us how much guidance he has gotten from the late Bill Walsh.  Walsh had the “expectation to change your perfection.”   Walsh always surrounded himself with driven people around him.

An example of this was when Turner earned his first Super Bowl ring.  He could have said, “Well, I have 1.  That is all there is.  I am satisfied.”  However Turner went on to win a 2nd, and then a 3rd and then…well you get the idea.  He was constantly changing his expectations upward.  You have to hate losing more than loving winning.  As Turner put it:  “Attack the Mountain.”

This Thursday's Program:

Robin ChapmanRobin Chapman, author of "California Apricots: The Lost Orchards of Silicon Valley," tells the story of the largest apricot orchard in the world and how it vanished to make way for Silicon Valley.

Published on April 16, 2013 the book is a best seller and in demand by the readers who's appetite for the local history is insatiable.

Chapman recounts the stories of Silicon Valley's now lost orchards. It is a charming book and full of her wonderful recollections. Meet the author on Thu. Aug. 15 at the Los Altos Rotary meeting for the author's presentation followed by a book signing.
