District Governor's Visit |
Our greeters today were: KAREN GESSERT, AILEEN LOW and STEVE GRUBER
Photographer: RANDY GARD
Pledge of Allegiance: BOB ADAMS
Song: JEANNE MAC VICAR; belted out “You Are My Sunshine”. Most
Rotarians knew this song believe it or not!
JOHN MCDONNELL gave the thought for the day. It was all about the big bang
theory and how all of everything came from a sphere no larger than a softball.
I’m really not sure about his theory or why he chose the symbol of the softball.
Maybe it had to do with our speaker today, Andy Dolich who spoke about
football??
PRES TRACIE MURRAY, of course, began the meeting at the stroke of 12:15.
PRES ELECT DENNIS YOUNG was not available for introductions as his wife Roberta
was having hip surgery almost at the time he would have been there. PRES
TRACIE introduced many visitors. Our first was a gentleman from Sweden who
exchanged banners with our club.
- DAVID CASAS introduced his wife Carol who was there partially to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary. Congratulations!
- DON HULL is getting back in to the swing of things by bringing another PACKARD, the brother of RON, Lon.
- NANCY SIMON introduced her husband Ted who spends his days working on Google Earth.
- DICK BLANDING introduced his friend of 30 years, Stuart Schlitt.
- DAVE SMITH introduced his guest Vicki Oldberg, a dean of finance at Stanford. BOB ADAMS introduced his guest Jason Sanborn of Axim, a regular guest.
- Finally STEVE SHEPHERD introduced a colleague at Northern Trust, Regina Souza.
You missed literally hundreds of announcements. Most of which I recorded,
but not all. Pres. TRACIE reminded us that next week, at the DISTRICT
GOVERNOR visit we must stand and applaud for him (her?) at the introduction.
That’s a standing ovation—required.
- President TRACIE MURRAY made an announcement for the ailing Karen FOX:
A CSA event HOMETOWN HEROS. Details here on CSA's website:
http://csacares.squarespace.com/hh2009/
- STUART BOWEN told of the Community Picnic in the Park, on Sept. 19th . Volunteers are needed to man two Rotary booths. A clip board started around, the first.
- JOHN SYLVESTER, touted the Wine Tasting at GARY AND SANDY MAGGARD’s home. The date is Sept. 4 and the address is 24100 Dawnridge Drive in Los Altos Hills. This is practically opposite the Kahn
residence on Magdalena. 6 to 8PM. Bring a bottle of wonderful wine and a small appetizer. I know I’ll be there. Another clip board.
- JEAN NEWTON needs old photos for our Child Abuse Program. Call JEAN if you have anything she might use.
- KENDRA GJERSETH announced a Los Gatos Rotary sponsored POLIO PLUS event at REGALE WINERY on Summit Road (left off 17) on 10/15 from 6 to 9PM. This is a wonderful new winery with GREAT wine.
Try it out.
- BOB ADAMS announced the grand opening of El Camino Hospital. They will begin to take new patients on 11/15 and will lead tours on 9/26.
BOB needs volunteers to help with the guided tours. He needs several for three hour shifts. Contact BOB. Another clip board.
- DAVE SMITH touted the play at Bus Barn, "TREASURE ISLAND”. Rotary will have a no host dinner at Maltby’s prior to the show. This event is on 9/18. Clip Board.
- PP SAM PESNER reminded us again of the Rotary Foundation Drive and had sign up sheets on every table. He also reminded us of the Burn Foundation.
- BONNIE BURNETT told of the 15th annual BEN ECKENHOFF MEMORIAL BIKE RIDE. This is a fundraiser and to sign up to help BONNIE reach her goal to find a cure
for leukemia, submit an official registration form to: Ben Ride, 270 Redwood Shores Parkway, Box 134 by Aug. 29 or e-mail to info@benride.org, or fax to (650) 965
3040. The ride is a fun ride, not a race and will be held 9/12. Begins at Peers Park, Palo Alto beginning at 9AM. You can go 10, 20 or 35
miles. They will happily accept donations if your quads aren’t up to the ride.
- JOHN MOSS suffered a mild stroke (TIA) and was hospitalized at El
Camino Hospital overnight. He his home now, (as of this writing) and
fully recovered.
SAM HARDING was the celebrated fine master. Believe me, money was the issue here. SAM himself fined himself $40 for his 4oth anniversary on Aug. 29. I’ve often wondered about JANET’s sanity.
Others were fined also:
- WEMYSS,
- WHIPPLE,
- WEBER,
- SIMON,
- MEDIN,
- BLANDING,
- PATTERSON,
- AHERNS,
- CRES MCFALL,
- HOLLANDS
- CASAS. CASAS challenged HARDING to pay dollar for dollar, year for year on their anniversaries. CASAS had 20 years, HARDING, as mentioned had 40. That move amassed $600 dollars to
the foundation. How it broke down, you’d have to ask the participants.
Our speaker was Introduced by Pres. TRACIE. ANDY DOLICH , chair of business and marketing for the 49ers gave one of the best talks this scribe has heard in many years. He has been involved in Professional
sports for 35 years including management positions with the Oakland A’s during their glory years.
He spoke of the 49ers in detail. It was so mesmerizing I didn’t take any notes. He said he’d e-mail me his speech notes, but that didn’t come about.
SO, IF YOU WERE NOT THERE, YOU MISSED A GREAT TALK. That’s your penalty.
The talks this year have been outstanding, thanks to PE DENNIS YOUNG.
