GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Dave SnowDAVE SNOW gave his TEN MINUTE PRESENTATION. DAVE heard about Rotary from DAVE BERGMAN and was sponsored by JULIE ROSE. His interests include travel, hiking, music and computers. He is married. He started up a semiconductor company with his father, ran a website for Oracle and now runs a web design firm, among other things. It appears that DAVE develops varied interests and pursues them intensely. Welcome aboard!

FEUD OF THE CLAN McALLLISTER

John McAlisterJOHN McALISTER engaged in Zen finemasting, chastising Rotarians for not knowing who was on the cover of the Rotarian Magazine. Of course, the magazine was a year or two old, but who’s counting, right? However, JOHN succeeded in fining many near and far, including but not limited to:

  • MEL (“I am not cheap – well, maybe I am.”) KAHN
  • MARLIS (“The Other”) McALLISTER
  • GEORGE ESTILL
  • BARRY GROVES
  • JACK KELLY
  • YOUR REPORTER
  • REZA KHAMNEIPUR
  • CHUCK (“I’ve got a new gig.”) LINDAUER
  • GINNY (“The Traffic Engineer”) LEAR
  • BILL PALMER
  • SHIV SHASTRI
  • SYLVESTER SCHIELE

TEN LINE PRESENTATION

The sole purpose of this publication is to pack the maximum number of names of members into 1 ½ pages of occasional sentences. So who are these names? Today, your Intrepid Reporter will acquaint the membership with LARRY MADSEN, who shot photos of all the Rotarians named above plus RICK CASEY, who opined on walls and fences for the Thought for the Day. LARRY is a retired architect best known for having invited the members of our Mother Club, Mountain View Rotary, to lunch and then serving them peanut butter. But he is much, much more. He is one of the best first basemen we’ve ever had on our softball team. For many years, when rollers were hit into the hole between first and second and MEL would field the ball and gun it way across the diamond toward first and into the dirt, LARRY would occasionally catch and hold onto the ball. On the basketball team, LARRY was one of the best centers we’ve ever had. The term “he plays just below the rim” was coined for LARRY. In golf, LARRY is renowned for hitting the ball off the tee and close to the pin (but never in the hole) on par 3’s.

TODAY’S PROGRAM

Alain BambaraPREZTOBE SETH introduced ALAIN BAMBARA, Rotarian from the Ivory Coast, who spoke about where the money went from the Rotary Foundation to the 14 countries of District 9100 in Africa, which is the size of the U. S. of A. west of the Mississippi. Polio has been almost completely eradicated, though it keeps popping up from neighboring Nigeria, where for political reasons immunization has been delayed. Rotary money goes to the digging of water wells, installation of pumps for wells and distribution systems, the purchase of malaria nets and the purchase of penicillin, which, at the cost of $0.25 per application, cures a case of yaws. Rotary money also goes toward the purchase of equipment like pizza ovens which an orphanage uses to sell pizza and make money to run the operation.
