Greeters, Val Carpenter, Julie Rose and Red Badger, Tim ByrdSoon after being greeted by VAL CARPENTER, JULIE ROSE and TIM BYRD, PRESIDENT JOHN chimed the meeting to order and MEG SOLERA pulled double duty.  First, she led the pledge then the song.  Ah, yes, the song.  The Girl Scouts could have done better than the choir on this fine day.

MEG actually tried to teach us a little ditty she used to teach the Girl Scouts and I’m sure it sounded much better around a campfire.  This was MEG’s last meeting with our club and we send her to her next club with our most heartfelt best wishes.    Here is Meg's contact information:

ANNOUNCEMENTS
KAREN OWEN is promoting a Rotarian Singles Fellowship Event called “Jazz on the Plaz” in downtown Los Gatos on Wednesday, August 22nd.  You single folks can check out the events on their website www.RSFCalifornia.org.

PE Seth ManningHear ye, Hear ye: P-E SETH says to get any changes to your information in the handbook to him by August 15th or you’ll continue to suffer the same consequences as in years gone by.

JERRY TOMANEK is done taking updated pictures for the handbook, so if you want to look any different, wait ‘til next year.

TRACIE MURRAY is promoting A Santẻ again this year.  This event is held in conjunction with Rotary Clubs from Cupertino, Palo Alto, Mountain View and Sunnyvale.  All proceeds benefit RotaCare.  The date is October 24th and will be held at the historic Del Monte Building in Sunnyvale (corner of Murphy & Evelyn).  TRACIE is also seeking donations for auction items from all you very generous Rotarians and friends of Rotary.  You’ll be hearing much more about this in future meetings.

Photogenic photographer BAIDRA MURPHY is setting the photographer’s schedule for club meetings.  Any of you digital camera aficionados are welcome to join the fun of being a meeting photographer; contact BAIDRA at your earliest convenience.

Now that PRESIDENT JOHN’s Serial Club Assembly Program is complete, we’re back on schedule for ten-minute talks from club members.  This week we were regaled with the life and times of the one and only DICK DUHRING.  Past President Dick DhuringDid you know that DICK was an Eagle Scout, clarinet player in high school, an infantry platoon leader in WWII, lived in a bombed out Tuscan village (and loved it), was a real estate loan officer for Wells Fargo, construction site inspector for Foothill Bank, secretary for the Cal class of ’44 and has been married 56 years?  And I know I missed most of the interesting parts of his life; just couldn’t write that fast.

RECOGNITION
Rick GlazePRESIDENT JOHN, before calling up the finemaster, told us that today was the 100 year anniversary of the Boy Scouts and actually suggested that DICK might have been one of the original scouts.  Famous columnist RICK GLAZE took the microphone to the sound of one or two hands clapping.  After finally getting KIM COPHER to run his duck bucket, he fined all the Eagle Scouts twenty bucks.  MONA ARMISTEAD was fined for having to explain her picture in the SF Chronicle hugging an unknown male.  In so doing, she got in a very smooth commercial for her pet project, the Vintage Affaire.  Good job, MONA.

The overly humble (his own words) MEL KAHN somehow got hold of a microphone and told the assembled masses that he was the “match-play handicap champion” at Los Altos Country Club.  MEL’s modesty was a topic of discussion by quite a few members for a short time.  Whatever he was fined most likely wasn’t enough.  DICK BLANDING, BAIDRA MURPHY, JULIE ROSE, KAREN FOX and GUY FARTHING all contributed to the cause.  DICK HENNING and SAM HARDING were fined because they knew the answers to RICK’s financial quiz questions.

PRESIDENT JOHN gave us eleven minutes of fellowship.  He’s learning how much fun it is to call the group back to order after “fellowship.”

PRESIDENT-ELECT SETH MANNING launched today’s program by introducing executive development coach, Richard J. Lee.  Richard LeeThe program was “Crucial Conversations (Tools for Talking When the Stakes are High).”

This is right from his website:  “Richard Lee and his team provide executive and organization development services to accelerate the alignment, capability and impact of executives, their teams, and their organizations -- scaling for success.  As one of the first few Master Trainers in the country for VitalSmarts, Crucial Conversations and Crucial Confrontations, Richard LeeRichard has led over 150 of these programs and was the top Principal Associate for VitalSmarts in 2005.  Through his consulting practice, Richard has worked extensively with some of the best companies and top management teams in Silicon Valley and around the world including Cisco, Genentech, Sun, eBay, and over 50 other Bay Area companies and throughout the world. He has developed a pragmatic yet energizing approach to building these skills for executives, managers and professionals.  Prior to starting his firm in 1994, Richard headed up Management and Organization Development at Silicon Graphics, 3Com, Advanced Micro Devices and Bellin Hospital.  Richard holds a M.S. in Management & Organization Development from the University of Wisconsin.”
