Important Announcement #2: Director of Membership, JOHN HAMBLIN John Hamblin, PP Bob Adams and new member, Barry Grovesintroduced PP BOB ADAMS, who introduced newest Red Badge member of the club, LASD Superintendent BARRY GROVES, whom BOB sponsored.   Welcome, BARRY.

PE John reminded the club that the dinner honoring Rotary International President Bill Boyd will be held in Santa Clara on 3 January. We have three tables filled (30) and more could join if they are so inclined.   RIP,  President Bill is an excellent speaker.

Art Show Poobah KATIE NUTTER announced a kickoff happy hour and first meeting for the 2007 Art Show. All past and current art show directors and chairs are welcome at the Nutter-Hasenpflug manse at 5:30 PM on 8 January.

Matt Cabot Operations Director MATT CABOT placed “Thank our Servers” envelopes on the table.  He will do that again this coming Thursday, which is the last Rotary meeting before Christmas.  He reports that $1,334 was collected so far.  A number of people said that they would “catch it next week.”  So the envelopes will be back again.  The donations will be shared among 3 or 4 people who were the servers.  It would be great if we could collect some additional funds.   Twenty dollars per person was originally suggested considering that the servers not only set up and take down the meeting room each week for our benefit, but serve and clear the tables as well.

Tracie MurrayTRACIE MURRAY reminds us to bring a new toy for a child next week, despite a serious cramp and spasm condition in her hand (This condition can be ascribed to CHOKING in the big game). Its all in fun, but do bring a toy. Dave Smith

Julie RoseJULIE ROSE announced the births of TWO granddaughters last week, three days apart, and became a Poobah, too. Congratulations, JULIE!

PP Dick DhuringFinemaster, DICK DUHRING, did financial damage to several previous friends, including BOO BUE, who said unrepeatable things in a strange language, BILL PALMER, who was in uniform on 7 December 1941, Cindy Wemyss, who was not in attendance when the Maine was attacked and Dick Henning, John Moss, and Julia Rose, who were honored last week with Los Altos-Los Altos Hills Community Volunteer Service Awards.

The club was treated to a 30-minute program of beautiful a cappella performed by the Madrigals of Mountain View High School, led by Jill Denny.

The club showed its appreciation with a $500 contribution in support of the program and through the purchase of the group's holiday disk by several members.  Poobah Sam expressed his gratitude for the Madrigals' program. As long as there are beautiful children like this in the world, and if they are taught to strive for world peace and understanding, there is hope for the future.

Poobah Sam closed with a musical history lesson. When the great composer Chopin passed and was laid to rest, after the funeral ended and the crowd had dispersed, the two gravediggers who remained hatched a plan to open the casket and view the body, so that they could say that they were the last to see Chopin.   When the casket was opened, the found Chopin, with sheets of his music in one hand and a big eraser in the other. Well, you see, he was decomposing!
