For
the second week in a row, the Rotator writer missed the opening lines. I am
indebted to STEVE YARBROUGH for scrambling to take notes until I arrived to
take the handoff of the pen. We’re not setting a very good example for new
Pres. SAM who adeptly led us in his second “power point” meeting. SAM
promised that after this Club Assembly, there would far fewer power point
moments.
BEGINNINGS
(Belatedly, that is)
BILLY RUSSELL, as our elder statesman, led the assembled multitude in the
Pledge of Allegiance and SETH MANNING provided the thought for the day.
From what SETH states, I hope we all enter a room and say, “there you are”
rather than “here I am.” I’m afraid the song got lost in the handoff from
STEVE to me. Among the visiting Rotarians introduced by now Pres.-Elect
JOHN MOSS was our dear old friend and former Los Altos Rotarian ED SOX to
see how well new Pres. SAM was doing in his new leadership role.
Upcoming meeting speakers will be BERTRAND PATENAUDE of the Hoover Institute
at Stanford University on July 20th and District Governor RUSS
HOBBS on July 27th.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
AND PRONOUNCEMENTS
Ø
The Board
meet Friday, July 14th at 3:00 p.m. at in the new community room
at First Republic Bank
Ø
JERRY
TOMANEK will handle the printing of the Rotary Handbook for the new year.
Look for sheets to update your information at an upcoming meeting. Also,
JERRY offered to take new photos and for $10/year, make you look younger.
For more money, JERRY might also make you look a bit slimmer. (I don’t
think I have enough money to accomplish the younger, slimmer look I
desire). Jerry will have his studio lights set up for the meetings of the
20th and the 27th., so if you would like a new photo,
please plan to arrive early or stay late after the meeting on one of those
two dates.
Ø
JACK
HEIDMILLER was given time for an announcement, then managed to make three!
(a) The crews that sold CHEF CHU’s Chinese Chicken Salad must have set
records with over $5,600 in gross sales. Thanks to everyone who took a
shift in the (hot) booth selling (cold) chicken salad to Art & Wine Festival
goers. And thanks to Chef Chu we netted almost $3,000. Thanks
LARRY CHU for your dedicated work last weekend. (b) Anyone interested in going through the CERT (Community Emergency
response Team) training will have an opportunity beginning in September at
the Hillview Community Center and (c) e-mail JACK if you are interested in
joining Los Altos Rotary’s Saturday morning bicycling fellowship. (No
Harleys please, you have to provide your own mode of power in this group!)
Ø
KIM COPHER
reminded those assembled that Saturday, July 29th is RYLA Day at
the A’s (Rotary Youth Leadership Academy). Even if you can’t go yourself,
you are encouraged to buy tickets and donate them to students who can enjoy
the game. Contact KIM if you can go, or help others go see the game. Camp
RYLA is one of the best youth leadership camps around for high school aged
student.
Ø
JERRY
TOMANEK announced his one man show of photography at the Peninsula Community
Foundation. You can see his photos there or on-line at
www.photosofwonder.com under “gallery, visual rhythm.”
Ø
SAM’s list
(so he wouldn’t forget to say or mention what he needed to say) included (a)
thank heartfelt thanks to BILLY RUSSELL for the gift of a 50-year-old set of
Rotary cufflinks and tie tack. Thanks for such a classy act, BILLIE; (b)
reminded Rotarians of the dedication of the Cann Quad Thursday afternoon at
the Eastside Preparatory School in East Palo Alto in honor of the tremendous
support to the school by BRUCE CANN; (c) announced an auction at the July 20th
meeting of tickets donated by DICK DUHRING to the production of “Annie Get
Your Gun” and a “Happy Trails” tribute to retiring BERNADINE FONG (Our most
recent Paul Harris Fellow recipient) at Foothill College Sunday, July 30th.
The event includes a 2:00 pm matinee performance followed by wine tasting
and silent auction and an alfresco dinner, tribute and live auction.
Proceeds of the event will support the BERNADINE CHUCK FONG INNOVATION FUND
at Foothill College.
MEMBER NEWS
Pres.
SAM provided a medical report on several members including DICK HENNING and
LUCY RASMUSSEN recovering from hip surgery, JEAN HOLLANDS from cataract
surgery and her husband from gall stone surgery the hard way – all 300
stones! Also, past member NELS BURDETT suffered a massive heart attack
recently but has rallied and is showing great signs of recovery and is now
out of intensive care. Our hopes for quick and full recoveries to all!
Pres. SAM also announced
that MIKE CABOT has accepted a job in San Francisco with a startup; an
opportunity he could not pass up. He has asked to resign from our club
since he can no longer attend our meetings. We wish MIKE every success in
his new endeavor.
RECOGNITION
Extortion, errrr, extraction, I mean recognition master,
STEVE
ANDERSON, provided opportunity for members to be parted from some of their
hard earned cash: GIGI CARTER (one year club anniversary), DICK HASENPFLUG
(for beating the fine master out of winnings at Texas Holdem’), DAN HOLDEN
(one year club anniversary), MEL KAHN (because STEVE ANDERSON was fine
master), STEVE ANDERSON (because MEL KAHN will be fine master next week),
GINNY LEAR (husband’s birthday and wedding anniv.), MARLIS MCALLISTER (son’s
little league championship), LEN MCBIRNEY (for demanding to know why anyone
would want to become a “Poobah”), JAN MINERS (for a “pre” five minute talk),
BILL PALMER (63rd wedding anniversary), STEVE SHEPHERD (for
beating JERRY MOISON and losing to his brother BILL at golf in Hawaii), JOHN
SINES (for accomplishments of his sons), JERRY TOMANEK (for a cultural
announcement – see what follows).
CLUB ASSEMBLY
KATIE
NUTTER, our Fine Art Show Chair for 2007, announced that GINNY LEAR will be
retiring as artist coordinator and art reviewer. In addition, JEAN NEWTON
will be retiring as promotions chair for the event. We all thank GINNY and
JEAN for their respective selfless efforts for the benefit of our club and
our community. KATIE also announced that revenues have remained relatively
flat the past few years so she will lead efforts to scrutinize many aspects
of the show to see if anything can be enhanced next year.
DUDE
ANGIUS reported on our recent Rotary AIDS Project efforts. He thanked the
many Rotarians and spouses for their efforts in the booth at the
International Convention in Copenhagen. Despite being one of the poorest
booth locations, they made many contacts and distributions. The publication
HIV AIDS Health and Your Community, has now been translated into
eighteen languages.
Through a Russian Rotarian at the Convention we
were able to distribute DVD s ( with the new Russian subtitles) to the
'Rotary in Russia' conference in Moscow in mid-June.
DUDE
adds the following comment: "In
my 'good news-bad news' summary of the RI Convention at LARC, I neglected a
very significant good news item. Through a Russian Rotarian at the
Convention we were able to distribute DVD s ( with the new Russian
subtitles) to the 'Rotary in Russia' conference in Moscow in mid-June.
Pretty important stuff."
DENNIS
YOUNG reported on our Los Altos Rotary Endowment Fund (LAREF) and reminded
us that World Community Service, the biggest recipient, scholarships to
youth next, and many local non-profit organizations, benefit from
contributions from LAREF. It receives its income from art show net profits,
direct member contributions, estate giving, and designated gifts. If we
want to give more, we need to build up the fund. Guy Shoup Fellows are
recognized for $1,000 or more in gifts (I think we have a little over a
dozen in our club) and Los Altos Fellow is the recognition for $5,000 or
more in gifts (DICK DUHRING is the only member to achieve this distinction
in our club to date. Who will be next?). One can also name LAREF in
his/her will or trust as a Rotary Benefactor.
Pres. SAM shared the results of the recent survey of our member’s collective
opinions of how well our club is doing. Satisfaction was quite strong in
most areas including fellowship, meeting community needs, meeting
international needs, as well as providing interesting and informative
programs. One exception was the “ provocative nature” of some of our
programs. Mixed reviews were evident as to whether or not to grow the club
bigger, but most agreed that we need to recruit to cover attrition (which
averages about ten percent per year in most clubs).
From what I can see and hear from our Club Assembly, I think we are in for a
very good year under the leadership of our new president, SAM PESNER, and
our club officers and board. Let’s all offer to do our part on committees,
activities and projects to achieve a year we all can be proud of.
