TODAY’S PROGRAM
Cindy Day
PREZSAM turned the meeting on its ear by starting with the day’s program.  CINDY DAY introduced Deena O'Shea Deena O'Shea, RN, of the Stanford Cancer Center.  May is Skin Cancer Month.  One in three Americans will have cancer.  One in five will have skin cancer.  One in three Caucasians will have skin cancer.  90% of skin cancer is caused by exposure to the sun.  Skin cancer is 99% curable in the event of early detection.  For men over 50, skin cancer is the most common cancer.  Skin cancer comes in three forms: basal cell, squamous, and melanoma, the most serious.  Susceptibility to skin cancer depends upon skin type and eye color.  For prevention, slap on sunscreen with 15+ SPF every 2 hours while exposed to the sun.  Wear sunglasses with “single UV absorption up to 400 nm.”  Sunglasses help prevent cataracts.  Tanning beds are dangerous.  Twenty minutes of daily exposure to sunlight, while wearing appropriate sunscreen, is good for health, enabling us to manufacture Vitamin D.  This intrepid reporter’s personal advice to prevent skin cancer in future generations is the following:  Procreate only with people with darker skin.

DOWN MEMORY LANE
PP Ginny Lear GINNY LEAR is just back from Vietnam, which brings back memories.  So GINNY fined lightly while reminding us of the stalwart “Duarte Rotarians” who espoused the right of women to join Rotary, resulting in a decision by the activist United States Supreme Court on May 4, 1987 compelling Rotary to admit women as members.  DICK HENNING soon sponsored our first woman member, ELIZABETH BARKLEY.  Elizabeth is no longer a member but is an occasional visitor and program giver at LARC.

MINIPROGRAM
Allart Ligtenberg ALLART LIGTENBERG introduced John Mitchum, President of the Santa Clara County chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.  John described how mental illness is not limited to wimps.  John Mitchum His daughter, now 38, was an accomplished athlete and musician who graduated from UC San Diego and was first diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 26.  Today she is under a drug regimen which is unable to return her totally to her previous state.  One in six of us will suffer a major brain disorder during his or her lifetime.  The Alliance sponsors and runs various programs in the mental health area.  This is increasingly important as the County plans to cut either 35% or $35 million out of its mental health budget for the coming year.

NEAL HOFFMAN AWARD
TRACIE MURRAY has been nominated for this District award.  Unfortunately, this intrepid reporter failed to gather any more data on the subject, though he suspects it is given to those who demonstrate lots of service above self.  Perhaps PREZSAM will educate us further on the matter.  Editor’s note:  The Neal Hoffman award acknowledges outstanding service to Rotary for members who are under the age of 45.  Congratulations, TRACIE!

MEMBERSHIP DAY
PP Mary Prochnow, Coeta Chambers and John Hamblin
JOHN HAMBLIN presided over the “bluing” of COETA CHAMBERS, sponsored by MARY PROCHNOW.  COETA is already a LARC Director and Art Show Coordinator.  She is a retired attorney who worked at Intel.

Mary Marley, Reza Khamenipur, Dominic Nicoli, John Hamblin, Nancy Dunaway and Val CarpenterThree individuals became Red Badgers.  DOMINIC NICOLI, a realtor with Intero, sponsored by JOHN HAMBLIN, NANCY DUNAWAY, Executive Director of the Los Altos Village Association, sponsored by VAL CARPENTER, and REZA KHAMENIPUR, a chiropractor, sponsored by MARY MARLEY.  Welcome aboard!

A woman went to the doctor's office, where she was seen by a young, new doctor. After about 4 minutes in the examination room, the doctor told her she was pregnant. She burst out, screaming as she ran down the hall. An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was, and she told him her story.
After listening, he had her sit down and relax in another room. The doctor marched down the hallway, back to where the first doctor was and demanded, "What's the matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 59 years old, she has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant?"
The new doctor continued to write on his clipboard and without looking up said, "Does she still have the hiccups?"
