In his usual snappy fashion, JOHN SYLVESTER led us in “You are my Sunshine”.

In the absence of President-Elect SAM PESNER, Past President STEVE ANDERSON introduced today’s visiting Rotarians and Rotarians with guests.  Among today’s visiting Rotarians, was Gordon Ansley, an honorary member of the Severna Park, MD Rotary Club.   Gordon’s childhood home was where Shoup Park and the Garden House now stand.  A couple years ago, Gordon contributed to our very own LAREF to became a Guy Shoup Fellow.  Gordon Way in town, was named after him.

One of our esteemed guests today was Laura Casas Frier, who visited the Rotary Booth at the annual City Picnic last weekend.  Laura is running for the Foothill-De Anza  District Board of Trustees.

JULIE ROSE asked us to say no words and instead devote a moment of silence to remember the Gulf Coast victims in their time of incredible loss and need.

Pres. MARLENE urged us to use our fellowship time to discuss with others at our table how we as a Rotary Club might assist the Gulf Coast hurricane victims.

Several announcements were made.  A summary of all announcements is at the end of this newsletter.

Larry Chu declared our baseball team is on a roll.

Last week, the LARC team beat the Cupertino Rotary Club 14 to 11.  Be there on Monday to cheer them on against Los Gatos.

Special kudos went to Community Service Director, John Moss, for organizing the City Picnic Booth almost single-handedly.  The booth was manned by many other volunteers including John.  Additionally, Rotarians manned the Partners for New Generations booth as well.   It was a good day for getting the Rotary word out in the community.

Pres. MARLENE impressed upon the Red Badgers in particular, that there are many opportunities available to them to either “make-up” or fulfill a blue badge requirement by attendance at any of the several upcoming meetings for LAREF, RAP, LARC, and the District.  Check the left-hand margin of this newsletter, for the proper dates, times, and locations of each meeting.

FIVE MINUTES, AND MORE, WITH MICHAEL STADLEN Michael came up with a clever way to not only allow us to get to know more about him, but to get to know a little bit more about other club members as well.  Anyone who was lucky enough to have something in common with Michael paid dearly for it as Michael had a full ten minutes to extract funds with his dual role as finemaster and redbadger.   He and Helen Presti were born in the same town of Malden, Mass.  He shares the same birthday of December 21st with Cindy Wemyss.  Age-wise, he is very close to Joe Lo Conte, Jack Kelly, Chuck Lindauer, and Mona Armistead.  Michaels’ parents were both foreign-born in Poland and the Ukraine.  Like Bruce Cann and Cres McFall, he is a piano player.  In his college years, he was a radio announcer, like Jack Higgens.  He enjoyed doing hockey games, but once caught himself announcing for the first lacrosse game he had ever seen.

Michael   studied accounting in college, but never became an accountant like SANDIE WHIPPLE, DAVID DEMATTEIS, and DENNIS YOUNG.  He married his wife, Diane on May 7, 1967.  Though no one in the club shares his exact anniversary date, the ones that come close are DICK BLANDING and KURT HAMMERSTROM.  He moved to and from Los Angeles three times before learning his lesson and moving to Northern California in 1985.  He worked for Rolm and its successors for nine years.  It turns out that at one time, JERRY TOMANEK  worked for Rolm as well.  During the 90’s Michael raised his two children, Andrew and Lisa.  Both of his children attended Yale.  JOHN MOSS and HEINZ BLENNEMAN were fined for not having attended Yale, but Princeton instead.   Michael has twin grand daughters for which he paid $40.00.  He noted that KATIE NUTTER is a twin and acknowledged BILL and JERRY MOISON in their absence for that same notable distinction.

Michael had much more ground to cover, and I’m sure would have found something he and I had in common, but unfortunately, he ran out of time.  He did say, he’d fill us in with the rest of the story someday.

The mystery gift Palo Alto Bayshore passed on to us by DG Arlene Greenberg was auctioned off.  After a lively volley of bids, Auctioneer,     Rick Glaze declared Mary Prochnow victorious.  $150 will go toward the Rotary Foundation toward Paul Harris credit.

PROGRAM- The Eye’s Have It STEVE ANDERSON introduced today’s speaker who was none other than our   own BRIAN WARD.  Brian is a Physician and Surgeon specializing in retinal surgery.  After progressing past the first slide of “Dance of the Lemmings” and explaining the title of his talk “ So You Want to Go Blind, Do You?”  Brian educated us with some interesting facts regarding legal blindness and described the most common conditions of the eye.   Macular degeneration is the most common condition in developed countries.  A person’s genetic makeup plays a large role in who may develop this condition.  Diabetes is to blame for causing much of the problems.  Over 17 million people in this country have this problem, of which 4 million are currently unaware of their condition.  One dollar in every seven spent in health care is diabetes related.   Current treatment of macular degeneration can minimize damage, but not reverse it.

Brian described different ways macular degeneration can be treated.

JOHN MOSS-  Volunteer now to help Hurricane Disaster Victims We all have been watching the news in horror as the Hurricane Katrina disaster in Louisiana and Mississippi is reported.  If you want to help more than just sending money, the American Red Cross and the Volunteer Center of Silicon Valley have put out a call for volunteers.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has asked California to recruit 120 volunteers a day for the next six to eight weeks. This requirement equates to 20 volunteers from Silicon Valley each day.

An intensive, two-day disaster training orientation is being offered for individuals or groups interested in immediate 1 to 2 week deployments. All travel, lodging and general personal expenses will be provided by the American Red Cross. Volunteers must be18 years or older and in good health.

The FREE 2-day Disaster Mini-Institute boot camp is for individuals or groups. The first class registration is closed. The second class is tentatively scheduled for September 14 and 15, 2005. However, as the situation develops, an additional class maybe scheduled next week.

Please have those individuals or groups that are interested contact the Volunteer Center of Silicon Valley. Richard Vega, Director of Information and Referral Services, the community disaster coordinator, is at 408-247-1126x309 or email to: irdirector@vcsv.us and can assist you with referral, scheduling and planning.
