In the beginning:  On our third consecutive rainless day, President CINDY called the meeting to order, called CRES MCFALL to lead the Pledge and called Alan Lambert to lead us in “Smile and the World Smiles with You.”  Speaking well into the microphone, DENNIS POTTER shared the thought that: Happiness is when what you think, what you say and what you do are in harmony.

President-elect MARLENE introduced visiting Rotarians and Rotarians with guests.  Visiting Rotarians included our County Assessor and the Presidents of the Cupertino and Palo Alto University Rotary Clubs.  Guests of the Club included the eleven high-school artists whose works were on display, some of their family members, the President of the Bus Barn Theater, a large number of SPANGLER family members and an even larger number of DUHRING family members.

President CINDY welcomed AL LIGTENBERG back from his twelve-week journey to Katmandu, Nepal. Speaking well into the microphone, Al presented President CINDY with a hat and flag and gave a summary of his trip.

And then there was business:  Membership Director LARRY CHU introduced new Blue Badger, and current Sergeant at Arms, JOHN HAMBLIN, sponsored by GINNY LEAR, and new Red-Badger, KIMBERLY COPHER, sponsored by SHELLY POTVIN.  Their introductions were acknowledged by the Club’s traditional standing ovation for the Red Badger, and a seated ovation for the new Blue Badger.

Art Show Chair, JACK HEIDMILLER shared that he was seeing his doctor immediately after the meeting regarding his infected toe.  Any Art Show announcements at this reading would only pertain to next year.

President CINDY then called upon Young at Art Committee Chair, CRES MCFALL to introduce the local high-school artists and their works.  Schools represented were Alta Vista, Community School of Music & Arts, Los Altos High School, Mountain View High School, Pinewood High School and St. Francis High School.  Cres presented checks and certificates to the student artists and said their work would be on display in the Gazebo during the Art Show and then moved to Main St. Café & Books until the end of May.  Cres then acknowledged his long list of helpers.

President CINDY took a moment and explained what Rotary is and does to the artists and their families, and offered congratulations to Cres for his fine work.

Recognition Master MARGE BRUNO tried her best to make “Big Cheeses” out of a few Rotarians.  BOO BUE paid a fine rather than give his Rotary Moment.  DICK DUHRING paid $25 to brag about his basketball playing family and MARTY SPANGLER paid $11 to brag about his family and thespian grandson.

LAREF JULIE ROSE announced candidates for election to the LAREF board and opened the floor for further nominations.  Being none, nominations were closed.  Three new members will be elected to the board at the June 9th meeting.

The proposed changes and additions to the club bylaws are posted on the club web site.  President-Elect-Elect SAM PESNER will review these changes at an upcoming meeting.

A Note of Appreciation to Friends of RAP
With much appreciation does the RAP Board thank the Friends of RAP for their generosity during the recently concluded membership drive. Over $9000 was raised which provided seed money for the translation of the book, HIV, Health, and Your Community, into Nepali, and the printing and distribution of the book at last month's District 3280 Conference in Bangladesh.

Further, we are now able to develop partnerships with selected Russian Rotary clubs to translate the book into Russian.

And then the Program:  President-elect MARLENE introduced Mr. Joel ben Izzy, an internationally renowned storyteller, who was recommended to the Club by DICK HENNING.  Joel graduated from Stanford with a self-designed degree in Storytelling.  He’s spent the last twenty years traveling the globe gathering and telling tales, as he says, from Tel Aviv to Tokyo and from Paris to Petaluma.

Some years ago, Joel’s own life story took a twist stranger than any story he had ever told.  He told us his story with great humor and insight and this “unintended adventure” became the basis for his highly acclaimed book: “The Beggar King and the Secret of Happiness.”

In addition to his work as a storyteller, Joel serves as an executive story consultant for such firms as Hewlett-Packard, Agilent, Kaiser Permanente, Nissan Automotive and Pixar Animation Studios.  He’s produced six CDs which have won numerous awards from such organizations as the American Library Association and Parents Choice Foundation.

Joel had his book and CDs available for sale after the meeting and he graciously donated a portion of the proceeds back to the club; but best of all, during his presentation, he told us the secret of happiness.
