Soon-to-be-Past President Marlene Cowan rang the bell on her final meeting of the Los Altos Rotary Club at precisely 12:18 p.m. on June 22, 2006.  Following the Pledge and a sorry rendition of “Take Me out to the Ball Game” by Rick Glaze,  who was lobbed upon by peanuts from the gallery by Kendra Gjerseth.

Since Sam Pesner was absent, he may be somewhere in Sweden, President Marlene welcomed Rotarians with guests including Jose Solera (Meg Solera) and Dr. Debra Rheam (Don Witt).

Jerry Moison told us about the 20 profound thoughts that have accumulated on his refrigerator and the bulletin board at his office.  President Marlene summed them up by pointing to the Four Way Test.

Next Week: Kickout!  Cindy Luedtke is kick-out chair!

Announcements:
Sandy Bozich reminded everyone that the Relay for Life is this weekend and encouraged us to by the beautifully decorated cookies on the table.  She suggested $10.

Matt Cabot commented that $10 for a cookie is a better deal than $100 for a paper bag, then encouraged everyone to sign up for the food booth at the Los Altos Art and Wine Festival which will be held on July 8th and 9th.  He needs 13 more volunteers to man the Chef Chu booth. Check out here to see what slots are open at the time of writing.

Relay for Life Pictures:

Steve Shepherd announced the winners of the Rotary Golf Tournament.  Steve said 47 players and a total of 60 for dinner participated.

Low net was Larry Madsen and Ann Oliver.  Yellow ball winners were the teams of Bob and Norma Rayl and Bud and Ann OliverMel Kahn and Matt Cabot were closest to the pin.  Longest drives were Jim LoConte (son of Joe) and Mona Armistead.  Bob and Mona also repeated as overall winners.  The poker tournament was won by Tom Liston, Dick Hasenpflug and Mel Kahn ($90 each!)

President Marlene announced that eight Rotarians have gone to Sweden, but only one has returned.  Wonder what they are doing there?

Marlene is looking for dancing partners for the Area 10 dinner dance to take place on October 22nd.  She has a table for eight?  Wanna dance?

Check out the Stanford flue vaccine study.  Materials available at the meetings.

Partners for New Generations received donations and commitments from Rotarians and friends of $27,000!!

Past President, Cindy Luedtke, presented the Rotary Award for Professional Excellence to Rotarian Meg Solera’s husband Jose Solera.  The award honors Jose for his professionalism and community service including his work at Intel, and involvement with scouting.  He was nominated by Val Carpenter. This is a Rotary District 5170 award.  Congratulations, Jose!

President Marlene presented Roy Lave with a Service Above Self Award for his work behind the Rotary scenes.

Wyatt Allen, Chair of the Rotary Foundation Committee presented a Paul Harris Fellow to Red Badger Amelia Ho

Tears of joy were shed by Irene Preston who was honored by her friend and fellow Rotarian, Ellen Yamane Flanagan, with a Paul Harris Fellow.

Los Altos Rotary honored four members with Paul Harris Fellows: Rich Fischer, Al Ligtenberg (who also earned a sapphire pin for his own contribution), Katie Nutter, and Kendra Gjerseth

President Marlene unveiled a new banner for the club.  It honors those who have made legacy donations to the Club, those who have become Los Altos Fellows, Guy Shoup Fellows, and Paul Harris Fellows.  The Legacy honorees are Sam Harding, Mel Kahn, Dick Henning, and Katie Nutter.  These folks are leaving bequests to Rotary in their estate plans.  Dick Duhring has contributed $5,000 to LAREF and is thereby named a Los Altos Fellow.  There are 14 Guy Shoup Fellows and 98 Paul Harris Fellows identified by badges on the new banner.

Dick Hasenpflug advised the club that dues will be increasing by $30 per member in June.  The increase was needed because no longer will any proceeds from the Art Show be used to support the club.  All Art Show revenue will now pass to LAREF for use in community and world service.  Dues will be $210.

Finemaster, Dan O’Donnell, collected money from Marge Bruno (50th Anniv.), Bella Berlly (20th Anniv.), Tom Liston (48th Anniv.) and Cindy Day (31st Anniv.).  Guy Farthing and CHUCK HESS also became members of President Marlene’s Explorers Club.

Rotarian, Jean Mordo, introduced the speakers for the day, Alex Atkins and Mary Davey.  Alex is the graphic designer who installed the Los Altos Hills history display at Town Hall in Los Altos Hills.  Mary Davey is well known for environmental advocacy in Los Altos Hills.

Together they introduced an 18-minute DVD produced by Nancy Traficanti about the city of Los Altos Hills.  The interesting video showcases the people and treasures of the community.  It focuses on Hidden Villa, Fremont Hills Country Club, Foothill College, Los Altos Hills Pathways and many of the interesting personalities of the city, including Wallace Stegner, Sen. Alan Cranston, Hon. Becky Morgan, David Packard, artists Ginger Summitt and Ethel Blank.

President Marlene rang her final bell after the program and declared: “My time is out!”
