PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Well done, Red Badgers! Your Auction dazzled us with the Mardi Gras décor, the comical graphics, the daring prowess of auctioneer Michael (the one with turned-up toes), and the sheer volume of wonderful goodies up for auction. We look forward to the report of your earnings on Thursday!  And we look forward to good fellowship together at the final meeting of the March Lunch Bunch attendance contest. Be sure to check the list of 100% attendees and come for the prize drawing on April 6.
See you at LARC Thursday,
  Marlene

[Webmaster's note:]  Before and during the Auction, our intrepid Photographer, MIKE HARRIGAN took a whole slew of pictures. Take a look.  You may find your picture.

Attendance  69.4%.

Last week's Rotator mentioned our attendance, and the associated Attendance Policy of the club as defined by the LARC board.  On the web we have the complete text of Attendance Chair MARLIS MCALLISTER's remarks for your review.  Attendance is an important element of being a member of Rotary, so it is worthwhile to understand the makeup opportunities that exist.

The doors of the Garden House opened at 11:45 a.m. so that Rotarians could view the many items slated for the annual Red Badge auction.  Rotarians were greeted by CINDY LUEDTKE, CHUCK LINDAUER, and JOHN MOSS.  As usual, our faithful JOHN HAMBLIN performed sergeant-at-arms duties.

President MARLENE COWAN convened the meeting at 12:15 p.m., asking HERB MARSHALL to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.  KELLY HUDSON led the group song, one which actually demanded movement, “The Hokey Pokey”, and WYATT ALLEN provided the Thought of the Day. President-elect SAM PESNER introduced visiting Rotarians and guests.

JEAN HOLLANDS announced that sign-ups are now on for the April 11 Rotary dinner at Chef Chu’s.  The cost is $35 per person.

KATIE NUTTER announced that sign-ups for the April 8 visit to the new De Young Museum exceeded the maximum of 35 people that permitted.  Therefore, priority is being assigned on a first-come (first signed up), first-served basis.  Katie will bring a list of who’s going and detailed instructions as to where to park and meet to future meetings.

President MARLENE COWAN made a number of announcements, starting with the joyous news that BAIDRA MURPHY gave birth to a son, Aidan Murphy, on March 22.  Proud grandmother, MARY PROCHNOW, informed us that her grandson weighed 7 lbs and 9 ounces and was delivered by “C-section” because “he was just a bit crooked.”  Mother and son are doing well and are expected out of the hospital on Friday, March 24.

Other health-related announcements from MARLENE COWAN:

1) PAUL NYBERG is home from the hospital after his triple bypass surgery and is up and about.  He’s bored and would love visitors.  He thanks us all for the flowers and card.
2)  FIROOZ GHAFFARI thanks everyone who is helping to drive him to medical appointments.
3) The last of the original charter members of LARC, GENE TARBELL, passed away on January 16.  Members may remember that, at the age of 94, he drove to Los Altos to help the club celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Additional presidential announcements included the following:

The “March Lunch Bunch” – those members with 100-percent attendance, will have their names submitted for an April 6 drawing for prizes that will include Celebrity Forum tickets and free lunches.  A list of “100-percenters” was circulated.  Members who wish to check on the status of their attendance may check with JOHN CARDOZA (john431@earthlink.net).

The April edition of the Rotarian Magazine will feature DUDE ANGIUS and the Rotary Aids Project in its “In Focus” section.

Thursday, April 6 is the date for the Gardner Awards dinner.  DICK DUHRING will be honored at this event.  Two other Rotarians – RICH FISCHER and CLYDE NOEL – will also be honored.  Tickets are $75, and a sign-up sheet is circulating.  For further information, contact JOANNE BYRNE at the Community Foundation.

The Cupertino Rotary Club thinks their meeting would be a great way to do make-ups if you’ve missed a LARC meeting.  The Wednesday, April 5 meeting would be a great one to attend. .  The featured speaker will be Dick Tomey, motivational speaker and head football coach at San Jose State.  RSVP by noon Monday, April 3, to Bev Lenihan at 408-873-9266 or bev@reesults.com

The Relay for Life Community Kick-Off Rally was slated for Thursday, March 23.  The Rotary Ramblers will represent our club.

The Assistance League of Los Altos and the Costume Bank invite Rotarians to their open house celebrating 45 years of service to the community.  The event is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 169 State Street on Thursday, March 30.

With March 22 having been designated as World Water Day, it’s appropriate to remind Rotarians that they might want to attend Rotary’s Interact Club Multi-Cultural Night on March 31 at 7 p.m. in the Los Altos Youth Center.  Tickets are $20, and proceeds go to Pump Aid – water pumps, that is.

President-elect SAM PESNER is the contact person for those who want to attend the District Assembly on March 30 and April 1.  Twelve members of LARC have already registered online for the District Conference April 28.  All members and significant others are invited.

After the announcements, the Red Badge Auction took center stage, emceed by MICHAEL STADLEN       and co-chaired by Gigi Carter and Kim COPHER  .  Proceeds of the auction will go to help rebuild a library in the New Orleans area, and decorations (table AND face) had a Mardi Gras theme.  Results of the auction will be announced next week.

Webmaster comment:  Here is a website I have mention before.  It is a Rotary club in India that shows Rotary is alive around the world:
