MILL STREAM OR MILLSTONE
ALAN LAMBERT
continued
his thankless effort to turn the assembled multitude into the Mormon
Tabernacle Choir West with a Technicolor version of Down By the Old Mill
Stream. Give him an A - for the day. ART SHOW REV-UP HERB MARSHALL announced the first ART SHOW COMMITTEE meeting for Tuesday, February 8 at 8:00 a.m. at the MOISEN CONFERENCE ROOM at 350 Second Street. Phone or email HERB for further information. BOARD NOMINATIONS Stepping down in July are LARC directors LARRY CHU, BAIDRA MURPHY and JOHN MOSS. Nominated by the Nominating Committee are JOHN HAMBLIN, MARLIS MCALLISTER, JEAN MORDO, KAREN OWENS, IRENE PRESTON, and CINDY WEYMSS. Next week, nominations will be accepted from the peanut gallery. Prerequisites are 2 years’ membership in good standing and no previous service as a director or president. If you wish to nominate someone, check with the person first, and check with PREZ MARLENE or Nominating Committee members SAM PESNER, JOHN MOSS, CINDY LUEDTKE, or MARY MARLEY about the good standing requirement, which means 60% attendance. The election will be on February 16. INDIA, INDIA GINNY LEAR, DICK HENNING and ROY LAVE just returned from India with spouses KING and PENNY where they observed a Palo Alto Rotary water project in action. SHOSHANA ZIMMERMAN announced that she was moving to India! Good luck, SHOSHANA. JIM REYNOLDS, RETAIL BAKER JIM REYNOLDS, RETAIL BAKER, gave his 7 ½ minute talk. Exhibiting a sense of humor faintly reminiscent of that of the late RODNEY DANGERFIELD,JIM traced his early years in Marin County, his time in New York, his time at Stanford Hospital as a statistician, and the imports and exports of JIMLANDISTAN. PAUL HARRIS AWARDS
DISTRICT GOVERNOR ARLENE
GREENBERG was present to present PAUL HARRIS AWARDS to
SERVICE ABOVE SELF AWARDS to
PINCH HITTER JOHN SYLVESTER pinch hit for RICK GLAZE as Finemaster. JOHN is best known for whale watching in the headwaters of the Salinas River. The headwaters are in and around King City, so whale watching in those environs is dangerous due to the presence of corroded and leaking oil and gas pipelines which may blow up at any time. TODAY’S PROGRAM SHIV SHASTRI, whose parents immigrated from India 50 years ago, spoke about India, its peoples and its connection to the U.S. January 26 is the 50th anniversary of the Indian Constitution. There are 2,000,000 persons here of Indian extraction. There are 80,000 Indian students in the U.S. The President of India is a Muslim and the Prime Minister is a Sikh. There is great development but great economic inequalities and an underdeveloped infrastructure. India will continue to fascinate and amaze us all. OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS- SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE The first organizational meeting of the Scholarship Committee will take place next Thursday, February 2, at 1:30 p.m., at the Garden House, right after the luncheon. The committee will select recipients of the Los Altos Rotary Community Service Scholarships. Students from area high schools and Foothill College are eligible to apply for these scholarships to attend four-year institutions or community colleges. There are a variety of different roles for committee members to pursue, and participation by as many Club members as possible is desired. |
