MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 9th, 2004

ROTATOR WRITER:  JACK KELLY

Editor:  Dick Blanding

September 9,  2004

In the Beginning:President Cindy called the meeting to order and introduced the Barbershop Quartet “Adagio,” who launched the meeting with a wonderful rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner.”

Dick Hasenpflug presented a very timely Thought for the Day by comparing the recent terrorist event in Russia to our own experience of 9/11/01.  We, as Americans, understand what the Russians who lost children, relatives and friends went through emotionally, and recognize that terrorism is a worldwide problem.

Announcements: Tracie Murray issued a challenge to our membership to participate in “A Santé.”  This is your chance to experience a taste of fine wines and cuisine from California and the Bay Area, all for the benefit of RotaCare.  This worthwhile event is co-hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Cupertino, Palo Alto University, and your own Los Altos Rotary Club.  It’s scheduled for Wednesday, October 6th from 5:30 to 8:00 pm at the Historic Del Monte Building (on Murphy at Evelyn) in Sunnyvale.  The cost is “a mere fifty dollars” and includes the above mentioned wine and cuisine tasting as well as a silent auction, live auction from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, and your own commemorative wine glass.  Remember, all for the benefit of the RotaCare Clinic

Jack Kelly made an impassioned plea for participants in the first annual Los Altos Rotary Club Poker Tournament scheduled for Friday, September 17th from 7:30 to 11:30 pm in the Garden House.  This is a “winner-take-all” charity tournament for the benefit of LAREF, so you’ll be playing for the glory (bragging rights) and the trophy.  Here’s an opportunity for all you “Amarillo Slim/Chris Moneymaker” wannabes to show your stuff.  The buy-in is “a mere fifty dollars.”  The tournament features dealer’s choice from standard games and a beginners table with instruction in play and strategy (right!).

Meeting:  Red-Badger Pat Gray gave her five-minute talk from which we learned she’s from the Keystone State (that’s Pennsylvania for native Californians) and that she prefers sales and marketing over the life of a scientist.  Pat deserves congratulations for actually keeping her talk to the allotted five minutes.

Wyatt Allen took us back to Rotary year ’90-91 for the Rotary Moment.  He shared that back in those days, our membership was only about 11% female versus today where our club is about 45% female members.  It was a great presentation except for the “less hair” closing comment.

Fine Master Meg Solera did a fine job of extraction for the requisite birthday, anniversary and other life experience announcements.  She also tested us with a quiz that exposed our limited knowledge of the history of Scouting in America.  Meg closed her session by offering very sage advice from her own experience: See your dermatologist regularly.

Program: President-Elect Marlene began today’s program by announcing that scheduled presenter, Police Chief Don Johnson, was unable to attend because of family matters.  She introduced Ms. Frances Edwards-Winslow, Ph.D., Director of the San Jose Office of Emergency Services/Metro Medical Task Force.

Dr. Edwards-Winslow gave a very timely, informative and historical account of where we are in the world today with respect to global terrorism preparation.  She began by honoring the memory of two fallen Chief Officers from FDNY on September 11, 2001.  She then covered a number of events leading to the concern for domestic terrorism and discussed local and regional preparation.  One point that sticks with this Rotator writer is that we, as Americans, have the responsibility to make the world a better place.

Dr. Edwards-Winslow concluded her presentation by pointing out material she made available covering emergency preparedness for your home, car and desk.  There was information about handling suspicious packages, bomb threats, and Homeland Security System recommendations for individuals, families, schools and neighborhoods.

In the End: President Cindy re-introduced Adagio, who closed the meeting with an inspirational rendition of “God Bless America.”  Adagio is a barbershop quartet which is part of The Peninsulaires Chorus.  Further information can be found on their website: HTTP://barbershop-harmony.org/

President Cindy adjourned the meeting by telling us to take this inspiration home.  She reminded us to Celebrate Rotary but don’t forget to have fun.

From John Cardoza:

The membership and sponsor application forms for new members have been completed to make them interactive. They are now active on our website.

Members and sponsors can fill them out on their computer and the information will automatically be sent to the Secretary, who will then forward it to the Membership Director.

Members no longer have to print out the forms, fill them in, and then have the Secretary or someone re-input the information on a computer.
