MEETING OF OCTOBER 7, 2004

ROTATOR WRITER:  Mary Prochnow

Editor:  Dick Blanding

Members were greeted by the melodious piano tunes of BRUCE CANN.  JOAN ROSSELLE was songstress with  TINY BUBBLES.   PAST PRESIDENT DICK HENNING introduced Rotarians and Rotarians with guests, filling in for our European Traveller PRESIDENT -ELECT MARLENE COWAN.  Mountain View Rotarian JUDY HANNEMANN was a guest and was congratulated on the recent 80th anniversary of her Club.  ROLAND PAYNE gave the THOUGHT FOR THE DAY, which was in the form of a letter which our speaker, Olympic Medal winner LAUREN MCFALL, had posted on her blog.  The letter was a tribute written to Lauren's parents,  PAULA AND CRES MCFALL by her uncle, CAREW MCFALL.  It was a well-deserved tribute to CRES and Paula for the many years of support that allowed LAUREN to get to the Olympics.

FINEMASTER duties were carried by MIKE HARRIGAN,  and fines were meted out to HEINZ BLEINEMAN, BOB CATHCART, SAM HARDING, CHUCK LINDAUER AND STEVE YARBROUGH for birthdays and anniversaries.   PRESIDENT CINDY fined the finemaster for a birthday of his own and for the quality of the joke/questions.

TRACIE MURRAY, ELLEN YAMANE FLANAGAN and JOAN ROSSELLE were lauded for their year's planning and successful completion of the A'SANTE  event benefiting ROTACARE.  GREAT JOB!

BRUCE CANN spoke about the upcoming (October 15th) celebration of the COANIQUEM burn centers in Chile.   See BRUCE if you wish to contribute to the burn center or attend this worthwhile event.

PRESIDENT CINDY brought news from the AREA 10 meeting.  130 Rotarians are signed up to take the train to the Chicago convention next June.  By train, air, or highway all should consider this great opportunity to attend a Rotary International Convention very near to us. This is the Centennial celebration in the State of Rotary's founding.  Any RI convention is inspiring- this one should be quite memorable!  Sign-ups are on the web site or in RI magazine.

Rotary Foundation Chair/ Past President GINNY LEAR kicked off the Foundation campaign. GINNY reminded us that one third of all dollars donated by our Club this year will be available to us in three years for matching grants. Our WCS committee works miracles with those matching dollars so be quick to get your tickets back in to the Foundation group.  Our Area 10 Rep, DAVE MCKENZIE was also on hand to invite your participation.  For our newer members, if you remember your orientation, you were told that you would be expected to make a minimum $100 annual donation to the Rotary Foundation as one of your obligations of membership. Now is the time!

Thanks to LUCY RASMUSSEN for organizing our tour of the Cantor Art Museum.  We enjoyed the extraordinary knowledge of your docents, great art and local history, good food and warm fellowship!  When can we do it again, Lucy?

BEN MCGANN mentioned the flu-vaccine shortage and said that he would advise us of availability as soon as he is informed.

JACK KELLY thanked all those who gave him leads on knitters for Alta Vista and now is looking for " the BOB ADAMS OF SOCCER", also for Alta Vista.

JACK HEIDMILLER invited all to join the Saturday bicycle group!

From BELLA BERLLY: " Please join Al and NANCY TRAFICANTI as they graciously host our next Friday night wine social on Friday, Oct 29. Come in your favorite disguise if you like (not required) and you might win a special prize for the best costume! This is a great opportunity for newer members to meet other Rotarians in a fun setting. Sign up sheet will go around during the next meeting or you can email Bella Berlly to sign up at Bella @GoalPath-Financial.com. The social committee promises you a highly spirited event."

JOAN ROSSELLE introduced LAUREN MCFALL, our speaker. Lauren graduated from Almond, Egan and Los Altos High. She is the daughter of CRES MCFALL and a recent Olympic Bronze medal winner.  Lauren was Captain of the US synchronized swimming team.  She has appeared on the Letterman show and the Today show and is featured in an AFLAC commercial.  Lauren spent sixteen years preparing for this summer's Olympics, most recently spending 10-12 hours a day, six days a week IN THE WATER!  LAUREN described, with infectious enthusiasm, her experiences at the games, the thrills of the opening ceremonies and the honor of representing the U.S.   LAUREN has set her sights on a career in broadcasting, and all present seemed to assume that they will witness that nationally in no time! Congratulations to LAUREN , her team, coaches and family. We appreciate having been given the opportunity to share in the joy of their accomplishments.

PRESIDENT CINDY closed the meeting reminding us to CELEBRATE ROTARY and HAVE FUN!
