MEETING OF November 18th, 2004

Writer:             Steve Yarbrough

Editor:              Dick Blanding

Our own City Manager Phil Rose led Rotarians in the pledge, followed by Allen Lambert’s ever-beautiful “America.”  Ginny Lear stood in for Victoria Emmons, whose thought for the day, paraphrased, was: To have a great purpose to work for is the secret to making life significant.

President-elect Marlene Cowan introduced visiting Rotarians and Rotarians with guests.  Marlene presented a short list of future programs and reminded everyone that there is no meeting on Thanksgiving Day.

World Aids Day is December 1, 2004.  District Governor Ron Seckel, DG Elect Eileen Greenberg, and DG Nominee Russ Hoss will be present on our December 2, meeting to help mark the RAP efforts and Aids education world-wide.

If you were not at the meeting, you missed getting the blue handout with all LARC members telephone numbers.  Attend the next meeting, so you can get one!

President Cindy announced that thanks to Jean Newton the Los Altos Story will air on several Bay Area television stations over the next week.

IN MEMORIAM:  Rotarian Franz Anderson, a once vital member of Los Altos Rotary, died on Veterans Day.  President Cindy remembered Franz as one of the most influential and participatory members for the Partners for New Generations work of LARC.  His memorial was held at St. Nicholas Church.  Farewell to a friend.

Rod Sayer, announced that CERT training will be hosted by the LAPD beginning in March 2005.  Rod is the public safety officer with the police department and advised that the emergency training is vital how we can respond in emergencies.  The cost is $90.  Interested persons may call the city police department to find out how to get involved.

OH BOY!  Finemaster John Sines finally finished with the cell phone fine session, earning contributions from George Dye, Paul Canard, Joanne Byrne, and Joanna Medin.  Did you know that John was born in 1947 and is still alive?

Rotary Foundation cheerleader Ginny Lear announced that participation in the foundation has topped the 40-percent level.  Of course, Ginny wants 100-percent participation this year.  With this club’s outstanding members, such an expectation is not unrealistic.  Ginny advised that you will be called if you haven’t sent in your annual contribution the foundation.  This is the lynch-pin of what makes Rotary work in the world and each of us is expected to contribute $100 per year.  If you would like to be a double-sustainer, send Ginny $200!   Ginny passed out contributor pins to 21 members for their contributions.

Boo Bue presented the Rotary moment.  Boo served as president in 1987.  RI asked Boo to raise $600 per member for Polio Plus, a total of $60,000.  He thought he could do better and did – raising $100,000 with the help of dedicated Rotarians like Len McBirney.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

ROTARY FESTIVAL  Watch the Los Altos Festival of Lights with fellow Rotarians!  Director of Fellowship Ellen Yamane Flanagan announced that special seating is reserved inside the fenced area of Main Street Café and Books for the event.  RSVP to Ellen by Monday, Nov. 22.  The event is held at 7 p.m. November 28, 2004.  Rotarians gather at 6 p.m.

Dick Hasenflug asked for volunteers to serve on the audit committee.  If you would like to help crunch some numbers, give Dick a call!

Tracie Murray announced the food drive is underway.  Bring food and toys to the meetings.  Also, Tracie needs a volunteer to help push the Rotary float at the festival of lights parade.  Can you help?

John Moss announced the annual Volunteer Awards Luncheon Friday, December 13, 2004 at the Youth Center behind City Hall.  Cost is $20 per person.  A LARC member will be honored, so John encourages attendance.  Call City Hall to buy tickets.

Joanne Byrne announced the annual Holiday Party will again be held at the Jesuit House.  Sign up for the December 15 event.

HEALTHY MEMBERSHIP:  John Cardoza announced that the attendance committee (John) may have missed you on Veterans Day.  I think we had 100 percent attendance, but you may want to check the website to make sure you were counted.

In the first three months of the Rotary year, there has been the following changes in membership:

Drops:    5 - Harriet Heebink, Kris Casto, Jan Schroeder, Dan Arra and Franz Anderson

Adds:     4 - Mike Cabot, Victoria Bracha, Chris Elson, and Kendra Gjerseth

Club membership:  160 Active Members

Here is a chart of our attendance for the first three months of President Cindy's term, compared to attendance last year:

LARC Honored for Outstanding Philanthropy  President Cindy made us all proud to be Los Altos Rotarians last Friday. Her acceptance speech before a crowd of nearly 1,000 people gathered at the San Jose Fairmont brought tears to our eyes.

The occasion was the annual National Philanthropy Day celebration sponsored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Silicon Valley Chapter. Rotary Club of Los Altos was selected as 2004 Outstanding Philanthropic Organization, one of only eight organizations or individuals honored with Outstanding awards each year.

Our Club was recognized for having a long-time history of support for our local community and our international projects, as well as our Club’s generous individual giving over the years. Cindy spoke of the many stories about how our Club has helped its members and the world, especially the Rotary AIDS Project and its worldwide implications. Attendees at the event learned a great deal about Rotary Club of Los Altos from Cindy’s poignant words so eloquently delivered from the heart.

The Club received an engraved plexiglass pyramid award from Tiffany’s, as well as numerous framed resolutions from local legislators and county supervisors. Now we just need a trophy case!

Attending from our club were: Bob Adams, Mona Armistead, John Cardoza, Marlene Cowan, Victoria Emmons, Dick Henning, Roy Lave, Ginny Lear, Cindy Luedtke, John Moss, Tracie Murray, Sam Pesner, Julie Rose, Joe Renati, Phil Rose, Joan Rosselle, Steve Shepherd, and Sandie Whipple.

CORRECTION TO 11-11 ROTATOR Last week it was reported that the young Marine, Joe Fischer (USMC)  was the son of Rotarian, Rich Fischer.  He is not.

TODAYS PROGRAM:  Marlene Cowan introduced program speaker Rich Fisher, superintendent of Mountain View Los Altos High School District.  Rich introduced new LAHS principal Wynn Satterwaite.  LAHS is one of California’s distinguished schools.  Rich is undeniably proud of the students and staff at the school and told of the accomplishments of students ranging from those who go to Harvard to others who succeed by arriving successfully on the bus and getting home again – special needs students.

Wynn came from a small high school and small college in Oregon to Los Altos.  She has worked as a science teacher and ROP coordinator before becoming principal.  She worried that the job would take her away from the students, but that has not been the case.  She is deeply involved in all aspects of campus life, and invited Rotarians to visit the school to learn more about what activities are taking place there.  She said of her students, “I work with the potential of tomorrow.”

Wynn told Rotarians that there are 400 students involved in sports at LAHS, 68 clubs, including Interact.  She praised the partnership with the Mountain View and Los Altos police departments with making the campus a safe and law enforcement respectful environment.

After fielding many questions from the audience, Wynn was thanked by President Cindy, who volunteered to pay a $20 fine for having her cell phone ring during the program.  Cheese!
