MEETING OF November 4th, 2004
Rotator Writer: Jack Kelly
Editor: Dick Blanding
The wonderful piano music of BRUCE CANN greeted Rotarians once again upon arrival. After being called to order, ALAN LAMBERT led a rousing rendition of “Home on the Range” in his inimitable baritone.
The always-prepared MARY PROCHNOW provided the Thought for the Day. She shared recollections of the 1989 visit she and BAIDRA MURPHY made to the Rotary Club in Waterford, Ireland. Comparing that visit to her most current one, Mary noted that times haven’t changed all that much in Ireland when it comes to acceptance of women in Rotary.
President-elect MARLENE COWAN, back from her golfing expedition, introduced visiting Rotarians and Rotarians with guests. She also reminded us that next week’s meeting will be held at the Los Altos Golf & Country Club.
Baidra presented President Cindy with a banner from the Rotary Club of Cork, Ireland.
President Cindy then introduced “Recognition Master” DICK HENNING, who apparently felt he didn’t receive proper enough recognition and led a round of boisterous applause for himself. After taking the requisite shots at MEL KAHN and the MOISONS, he extracted cash from, among others, TOM LISTON for the Poker Tournament and MARY MARLEY for completing her marathon. Fines were also levied against those Rotarians not having proof of voting on Tuesday.
President Cindy thanked AL and NANCY TRAFICANTI for hosting the wine fellowship last Friday evening. GINNY LEAR explained where our LAREF dollars go and JOE CORRAL, co-chair of our World Community Service told about the two classrooms that were furnished in Guatemala with the money provided by our club.
Ginny also recognized VAL CARPENTER and welcomed her into the Paul Harris Society. Ginny then introduced and presented pins to 31 members as double sustainers, most of whom were actually in attendance.
BOB ADAMS gave us a presentation for PNG. PNG needs volunteers and tutors to work with students from Los Altos, Mountain View and Alta Vista High Schools. As every parent knows, teenagers want and need someone (other than their own parents) to listen to what they think and have to say. Here is the perfect opportunity for anyone willing to help make a difference in a young person’s life to step up and spend a couple of hours a month acting as a mentor and/or tutor. If you have any interest at all in supporting today’s young folks, please see Bob Adams. The rewards are immeasurable.
In the Rotary Moment, DICK BLANDING told of the year 1988 when then President BO BUE was given the goal to raise $64,000 to fight polio and how he managed to raise significantly more than that. Dick also shared stories about how polio has affected various club members and their spouses.
Once again this year, TRACIE MURRAY is seeking donations of non-perishable food and unwrapped toys for CSA. CSA also needs volunteers to help with their efforts during the holiday season.
SAM HARDING announced the presentation of “Stars, Stripes and Sousa” at the Eagle Theater on the Los Altos High School Campus on Veterans Day, November 11th.
MATT CABOT announced he needs help transporting individuals in need of medical treatment to and from the Palo Alto Medical Clinic. If you can help, please call or email Matt.
Today’s Program:
Dick Henning introduced Robert Parsons, Outreach Advocate, from the Neuroscience Institute at Stanford. Mr. Parsons is a stroke expert, both in education and from his own experience. He explained what a stroke really is and the difference between a heart attack and a stroke (blood clot affecting the heart = heart attack; blood clot affecting the brain = stroke). He told us that stroke is the 3rd most prevalent cause of death (behind heart disease and cancer) in the U.S. Two thirds of Americans over 65 are affected by a stroke, and he has records of people as young as 19 suffering from a stroke.
Mr. Parsons discussed how what we eat can help determine our susceptibility to a stroke, the common causes, how to recognize symptoms, and what we can to in our attempt to prevent a stroke. He also gave tips and insight regarding headaches that may be lifesaving.
This was an outstanding program and I know quite a few of us were disappointed that time ran out. The more information we all have on such a subject the better off we are.
