MEETING OF MAY 27, 2004

Rotator Writer:  Mary Prochnow

PRESIDENT AL opened the meeting and JEAN HOLLANDS led the Pledge. JOHN MCDONNELL led the " original version" of YANKEE DOODLE DANDY and JOHN CARDOZA gave the THOUGHT FOR THE DAY which spoke about youth being a state of mind and warned that giving up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.

PAST PRESIDENT GEORGE PERHAM  was a special guest celebrating a special birthday, comparing the fruit of his harvest with our President and enjoying this year's "YOUNG AT ART" winners. The "YOUNG AT ART" program was originally George's idea and we hope that he was as proud as he deserved to be.

BAIDRA MURPHY elicited fines from many a willing Rotarian including MIKE SPENCE who volunteered a $500.00 contribution to LAREF  for scholarships, DENNIS YOUNG who was celebrating the completion of a balanced set of four grandkids (two girls, two boys) with the birth of  Taylor Lauren on Tuesday.

HERB MARSHALL claimed the title of speediest microphone technician as he came to the rescue!

JACK HEIDMILLER writes "We will again have our booth at the downtown Arts and Wine Festival  on July 10 and 11, selling Chef Chu's Chicken Salad. We will need lots of Rotarians to sign up for a 3 hour booth party so check your schedules and be ready to sign n when you see the list at our meetings.  It's OK to invite family members to work with you on your shift."

CELEBRATE.....It is almost time to help PRESIDENT AL celebrate the end of his dedicated year of  service to our club.   SAVE THE DATE ; JUNE 25....LOS ALTOS GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB.......TELL YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER....GET IT ON THE CALENDAR....This is the one social event of the year that you will be charged for whether or not you attend so why not make it a point to show your appreciation for a job  well done!

CRES MCFALL and KATHY BERRY chaired the YOUNG AT ART program and they  hosted seven budding artists from five local schools. The young people held up their impressive creations and accepted their awards and accolades with aplomb.

The program of the day was the SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM again chaired so well by PRESIDENT ELECT -ELECT MARLENE COWAN. She shared her duties with the following extremely hard working Rotarians (THE INTERVIEW SCHEDULE IS INTENSE): BOB ADAMS, DICK BLANDING, JOHN BOGART, JOHN CARDOZA, VALORIE CARPENTER, KURT HUEG, TOM LISTON, LEE LYNCH, SETH MANNING, CAREW MCFALL, BAIDRA MURPHY, ROLAND PAYNE, BILL REWAK, MIKE SCHNEIDER, SHIV SHASTRI, MEG SOLERA, MIKE SPENCE, and JERRY TOMANEK. Thanks, too to Pat Millner for assisting MIKE SPENCE with the scholarship letters and special appreciation to BANK OF  LOS ALTOS, especially WYATT ALLEN and JACK KELLY.  $15,500 was awarded to 9 extremely accomplished and inspiring young people off to many prestigious schools which are lucky to be accepting these bright lights of  the future.  As is the custom a boy and a girl from each intermediate school were also honored.  If you missed this program, make it a point to attend next year. It is the best possible antidote to the negative news to which we have been subjected for the past many months.

To all:  Please accept my apology for the extreme lateness of this Rotator; between a problem on my office computer and the happy challenge of an extreme amount of business I was not able to get it done sooner.......Mary
