MEETING OF MARCH 18, 2004
By Cindy Luedtke
Openings
JOHN SYLVESTER kept us all on task and in time to a peppy “Home on the Range”.
About using your free time wisely…
ROLAND PAYNE noted that today is Einstein’s birthday. Roland thought it important to note what one man can do in one year after work hours. Einstein did some of his most important work while moonlighting. Finally Roland quoted John Keats, who said “A thing of beauty is a joy forever” and suggested that today we take some time to admire the beauty in the world.
Speaking of a speech contest….
PRESIDENT AL announced that the Area 10 speech contest will be hosted at the Palo Alto University Club on Friday, March 26th. Those interested in attending, can carpool from the front parking lot of Bank of Los Altos at Village Court Shopping Center. The carpool will be leaving at 6:50 AM to make the 7:15 AM meeting time. Let’s cheer our fine speaker, Vivian Thorn onto District Greatness.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT NEXT WEEK! PLEASE NOTE!
Next week’s meeting will start early at 11:30 AM to allow enough time for the Red Badgers’ fundraising activities. RED BADGE CHAIR, MARION TAVENNER says, “Bring your checkbook and a guest with a checkbook”.
Save the dates and make your reservations for the District Conference at the DoubleTree in San Jose April16th- 18th. All workshops are free and you only need to pay for your own meals. SAM PESNER, this year’s District Conference Chair informed us of the easy way to register on the website for as many as 8 different forums. There is one workshop geared specifically for new members to Rotary while another focuses on “New Models for Rotary” designed for the Rotarian who’s been around Rotary for a while. After dinner entertainment looks fun with a “Buddy Holly Show” and DJ on Friday and a big band for Saturday Night. In addition, the Club will have our own hospitality suite to relax and socialize before dinner each night.
SAVE YET ANOTHER DATE for attending the District Assembly to be held on May 6th and May 8th, especially if you are an incoming officer or committee chair. This event is also held at the Double Tree.
We Need You…and your friends, spouse, etc.
SAM PESNER urged us all to volunteer early and often for working at the Art Show on May 15th and 16th. It’s a great opportunity to get to know your fellow Rotarians in a real “teamwork” effort. If you have already offered your services, see if your spouse, friend, or neighbor would like to lend a hand at the show this year.
Spread a little Sunshine
One of our most senior members, ROY DUNNETT, is in recovery at Los Altos Sub Acute in Room 216. He would welcome visitors. MATT CABOT announced that former member and past president of LARC, George Perham, is recovering in Sequoia Hospital after just having a heart valve replacement operation.
A once in a lifetime opportunity
DICK HENNING mentioned those who missed the centennial group photo can still have a chance to have their picture taken and inserted in the photo. This photograph will be published in the Rotary centennial book being published by the District. So, see Clyde Noel for a quick outdoor snapshot so you can “join the club” and be part of history.
A sponsorship opportunity
Art Show Director, JERRY MOISEN announced there are still some opportunities for an individual or business to be a sponsor for the Fine Art Show. A sponsor will have a deductible expense and the opportunity to help provide approximately 12% of the proceeds that will go to LAREF for worthwhile programs and projects in our community.
Got Space?
New member, DOUG FRANCO has hit the ground running with his work in World Community Service. Right now he needs help in locating storage space for medical equipment bound for Afghanistan for the period of late April to early May. The plan is to send to containers, so he needs space about the size of two double-size garages.
Something’s working….
Our club’s attendance numbers have improved over the past month. Keep up the good work and keep coming to the meetings. We need all of you.
Fine master, JOHN SINES was greeted with the usual “warm fuzzies” he so craves. In recognition of St. Patrick’s Day on Wednesday, John aligned his questioning around memorable trips of U.S. Presidents to Ireland. When asked what remains of President Clinton’s visit, he managed to stump the likes of DICK HASENPFLUG, DAVE DEMATTEIS, and JERRY MOISEN, DAN O’DONNELL, and MARLIS MCALISTER (Be sure to pronounce her first name right next time. Remember the long e vowel sound). MARION TAVENNER managed to play “Beat the Finemaster” and therefore escaped fining which is practically unheard of. JOANNE BYRNE paid for the privilege of being a social butterfly and remind everyone about this evening’s performance by RICK GLAZE at Beau Se Jour. CLYDE NOEL admitted a birthday and was able to identify Ronald Reagan as another President who visited Ireland during his term in office. LEM SUMMEY paid $20.00 for not playing golf, but cruising around Ireland and taking the time to take a bath in Bathe with still some time to kiss the Blarney Stone.
A sucker for applause…
PRESIDENT AL was able to generate much excitement from the group when he announced there will be no fines next week.
One of the questions raised in the club assembly held in January was “What is the President’s Club?” And with his answer, Al explained that a total of $100.00 in fines will buy you a membership and a choice of a box of fine chocolates or a bottle of his now-approachable wine. In fact he admits, he’s pushing the chocolates because he doesn’t want to give all his wonderful syrah away. Though, it’s now drinkable, he still advises that all the wine recipients so far not open and drink until January 2005.
Where you going to go when the Volcano Blows?
LUCY RASMUSSEN introduced the only volcanologist she knows. We’re so lucky then, because Robert (Bob) Christiansen happens to be a very interesting and celebrated
volcanologist. Bob was the scientist in charge at Mt. St Helen’s after its recent eruption in 1980. He was also the main scientist on Discovery Channel’s production of “Super Volcanoes”. Bob is a Scientist Emeritus with the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park.
The topic of Mr. Christiansen’s presentation was on “The Active Volcanoes in California; Shasta and Lassen. Many of us were not aware of the recent eruptions at both Shasta and Lassen or that there is a high probability that there will be another eruption at either location in the not too distant future. We need to keep in mind that in geological terms, a century is a relatively short period of time. But all the same, Bob’s work involves study of these two peaks in California, as well as others, and the effects to the surrounding populations if an eruption occurs. Mr. Christianson gave a fascinating talk and showed photographs taken in 1914 and 1915 when Lassen last erupted.

RED BADGE AUCTION
The Red Badge Club of 2003-04 welcomes you to the Red Badge Auction.
We are pleased to dedicate the proceeds of the Auction to the Los Altos Rotary Foundation (LAREF), to be immediately forwarded to Operation Rainbow. Operation Rainbow has a twofold mission of providing free plastic and orthopedic surgery for children who do not have access to care in the United States and in medically underserved countries around the world; and providing continuing education to international health care providers to encourage medical self-sufficiency. Operation Rainbow envisions the world’s children, free of deformities and pain, living lives filled with hope and joy.
Their local group is comprised of Stanford surgeons, who arrange to make five or six trips a year to a small village in Nicaragua for the purpose of providing the impoverished population there with as many as 40 operating procedures in a period of four days. The most common corrective surgery performed is for clubbed feet and polio victims. Currently, an amount of $7,000 is urgently needed to pay for bandages, plates, screws, and other needed medical supplies for a single trip to Esteli, a village in Nicaragua that is scheduled to take place in early July. Funds raised in excess of this amount will go to LAREF to benefit other international and local causes.
We thank you in advance for all your generosity & support!
Sincerely,
The Los Altos Red Badgers
(And some Blue Badgers)

1999 Chateau Lafite Rothschild. For the serious wine aficionado or the person who would love to celebrate the perfect occasion with the perfect wine, Chateau Lafite is clearly one of the world's most spectacular wines. Here is how two wine publications describe this outstanding selection:
WINE SPECTATOR 95 POINTS CELLAR SELECTION.Complex aromas of blackberries, tobacco, spices and black licorice are alluring in this full-bodied claret, with a solid core of fruit and silky tannins. Long, caressing finish. Superfine, well-structured. Best after 2006. 03/31/02 (JS)
ROBERT PARKER WINE ADVOCATE 95 POINTS The 1999 Lafite Rothschild sports an engraved "1999" on the bottle along with an eclipse to mark that significant historical event of August, 1999. It is a quintessential offering from Lafite Rothschild. This prodigious wine is both elegant and intensely flavored, and almost diaphanous in its layers that unfold with no heaviness. An opaque ruby/purple color is accompanied by a complex bouquet of lead pencil, graphite, cedar, creme de cassis, toast, and vanilla. It is medium-bodied, with extravagant layers of richness yet little weight, and a finish that is all sweetness, ripeness, and harmony. This extraordinary Lafite increasingly appears to be a modern day clone of the majestic 1953. A mere one-third of the crop made it into the grand vin! Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030.04/02
