MEETING OF JUNE 3, 2004

By Steven L. Yarbrough

Editor Dick Blanding

It was a special day at Rotary.  First we welcomed two new members to "Lend a Hand" with the objectives of Rotary, then we honored the many volunteers who have made Partners for New Generations a gemstone of our club.

Mike Harrigan led us in the pledge and song master Seth Manning led us in God Bless America.  Then Len McBirney gave his inimitable thought for the day – which, paraphrased, was look around and see if you can find a happy thought for the day.

Two Rotarians were presented with Service Above Self Awards by President Al: Shelly Potvin and Joanne Byrne were honored for their many unsung hours of devotion to the objects of Rotary.

President Al reminded everyone that the revised bylaws of the club are posted on the website for review.  If you have not had a chance to review them, please do so before the club vote on the revision on June 17, 2004.  The bylaws are at www.losaltosrotary.org/bylaws.html

LAREF elections were held during the meeting.  Three candidates volunteered to serve: Shiv Shastry, Marion Tavener and Lee Lynch.  Marion was selected to fill the vacancy by vote of the club members present.

President Elect Cindy Luedtke returned from Osaka Japan with a fist full of banners and a heart full of enthusiasm for serving as president of our club next year.  We can’t wait for her to pick up the gavel from President Al, who according to Mary Prochnow will be drummed out of office at the June 24th club luncheon, followed by a celebration of his tenure later – events you will not want to miss.

Cindy informed the club that she was among 40,000 Rotarians and families in Osaka, representing 500 districts, 31,600 clubs and 163 counties.  Dude Angius, Lee Lynch and Dick Henning were also in attendance.  Cindy forged new friendships with Rotarians everywhere she went.

Bob Adams announced that the Rotary softball league is looking for some hitting and running.  If you would like to play softball this year, call him soon.  Larry Chu will lead our effort this season.

Herb Marshall was selling left over Art Show wine and glasses from his truck in the parking lot.  If you could use a little, see Herb.

Paul Schutz, sponsored by Wyatt Allen, and Heinz Blennemann, sponsored by Roland Payne, were introduced as new red badge members, making them the newest members who wish to Lend a Hand in Rotary.  We welcomed them with a standing ovation, as is President Al's protocol.

Fine master Marge Bruno collected a few greenbacks for the clubs’ coffers from Jack Higgins, Cathy Berry, and Jerry Moison.

Mary Marly moderated the program for the day honoring the volunteers of Partners for New Generations.  It was an opportunity to thank the volunteers of the community and the organizations which sponsor the program, including Los Altos and Mountain View Rotary, the Packard Foundation and the Los Altos Community Foundation.

Nancy Glaze, of the Packard Foundation presented an outline of the foundation’s history of helping youth in the area.  Liz Nyberg told us about her experience as a tutor in the elementary schools over the past five years.  Nadia Perales spoke regarding the high school tutoring program.  Louis Borel informed us about teaching French and the gratification of seeing students learn a second language.

Bella Berlly presented on the Child Advocate Program and the work those volunteers do with children caught up in the dependency system of the courts.  Mary Marly spoke about the Out-To-Lunch program and the work of the many volunteers who meet with students for mentoring.

Mentor Don Johnson and his mentee Joey Hurwick shared there growing friendship and how much they each benefit from their contacts in the program.  Bill Crawford and Justin MacInturf also spoke about their long friendship and having someone outside the family with whom to share confidences.  Brenda Neidert introduced us to her “perfect teenager” Lanal Nguyen whom she is getting to know through the mentoring program.

Mary announced that next year the program will be co-chaired by Hinda Webber and Sandi Whipple.

The next Board of Directors’ Meeting is scheduled for June 9, 2004.  Please join us for a makeup.

Webmaster's Notes:  Are you having problems with computer viruses?  I and other members are receiving a large number of "spoofed" emails from Rotarians.  This means that someone, possibly a member of this club, has an infected computer that is sending out virus-laden emails.  The "spoofing" refers to the ability of the virus to send emails using the names of the persons found in the Outlook files in the infected computer.  In other words, the person who seems to be sending you the email is not sending you the email.  The virus is doing the sending.  To avoid these viruses, please consider the following actions:

1.  Get anti-virus software and keep it up to date.  If you haven't paid the vendor in the past year for a new subscription, it is probably not up to date.

2.  Check the "send" file in Outlook or whatever email software you are using.  If you find any messages in that list that you did not send, you just might have a problem.  See #1 to fix this.

3.  If you have a DSL, cable, or T-1 connection to the internet, don't leave your computer connected to the internet 24 hours a day.  A constant connection gives hackers more opportunity to explore your computer's lack of security.
