MEETING OF JULY 15, 2004

By Jack Kelly

Editor:  Dick Blanding

The meeting was called to order by President Cindy, and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mountain View President-elect Bruce Barsi.

Song leader Seth Manning led us in a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday to honor Billy Russell’s 90th birthday.  Billy was presented with a cake rolled in by Ellen Yamane and from what I could tell, he had plenty of help blowing out the candles.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BILLY!!!

Jean Hollands delivered the Thought for the Day.  She talked about Rotary friendships and gave a brief history of her relationship with her husband of one year.  Jean told the story of her favorite rose bush surviving the traumatic experience of a home remodel.  That morning, she found a beautiful rose blooming beneath the rubble, picked it, and presented it to President-elect Marlene who had introduced Jean to her husband, Tom.

President-elect Marlene introduced visiting Rotarians and Rotarians with guests.

Marlene also announced that if you haven’t used your Rotary Clubmate password in the past six months, it has most likely changed.  To verify, click the “Member Services” link on our website.  Please email Club Secretary John Cardoza (john431@earthlink.net ) to get your new password.  Write it down, keep it in a safe place and, most importantly, bring it to the August 19th computer training meeting at Foothill College.

Lee Lynch thanked the Los Altos and Mountain View Rotary Clubs for their financial support for the AAUW Tech Camp for girls.

David Dye, Chair of the Vocational Services Committee, discussed how his group provides resources to vocational programs at local schools.  Any Rotarian interested in participating as a speaker or career resource person is invited to contact David and complete the vocational information form.

This month’s Rotary Moment was presented by Roy Lave.  Roy told us how Dick Durhing started the World Services Committee in 1977 and traced its history to the present.  This committee has gone from zero to being able to contribute $20,000 to various programs today.  Dick received a seated ovation for his continuing contribution to the Club.  THANKS, DICK!!!

Jack Heidmiller thanked all the wonderful volunteers for their time and energy during the Los Altos Art & Wine Festival last weekend.  The volunteers are: Cindy & Alyssa Wemyss, Meg Solera, Pat Gray, John & Jackie Moss, Marlene Cowan, Doug Fanco, Pat & Betty Farrell, Louis Borel, Joe Corral, David Smith, Don Witt, Dan O’Donnell, Francis La Poll, John Cardoza, Sandra Whipple, Victoria Emmons, John McDonnell, Seth Manning and Lem Summey.

The gross income this year was $6,307.00; up from last year by $674.00.  After the cost of food and booth space, the Club netted a new record of $2,849.00.

Jack said the new club banner was on display for the first time and is now available to all.

Larry Chu invited one and all to attend the next softball game against Saratoga Monday night at 8:00.  The game is at the field next to Crittendon School on Middlefield Rd. between Rengstorff and Shoreline.

President Cindy introduced Bruce Barsi, MVPD, and MV Rotary President-elect, to talk about the Rotary Day at the A’s on August 14th vs. the Kansas City Royals.  Instead of asking Rotarians to attend, they passed the hats and asked for contributions so needy kids could attend.  A part of the cost of each ticket goes to support our Camp RYLA scholarships.  In about one hour, our Club contributed $754.00 to two very worthwhile causes.

FineMaster Marge Bruno did something very unusual (for a Finemaster); she contributed $20 for Billy Russell.  Bill Palmer gave $59 in honor of his 59 years of marriage.  Larry Chu was fined $25 for his apparent disrespect for Mel Kahn’s softball skills.  Remember, when you join the President’s Club, you become a “Big Cheese.”

President Cindy thanked the group for keeping quiet and for showing respect and consideration while others are speaking.

Val Carpenter introduced Mr. Don McDonald, who presented “History of Los Altos.”  Mr. McDonald’s program included various pictures/scenes from the 1800s to as recent as 1990 (Veterans Memorial in Shoup Park).  The pictures showed the transformation from orchards in the early-to-mid 1900s to housing tracts after WWII.  We even saw a picture of a LARC luncheon from 1949.

One item of note:  not one single club member was observed wearing a cheese head at this meeting.  Are you all just waiting for football season???

Meeting was adjourned at 1:30 pm.

Webmaster's notes:  About 30 members were at Cindy's home Friday night for the first wine and cheese social event of the year.  Thanks to Cindy and Dave Luedtke for a great event!

Please remember that if you have something that you want in the Rotator, please send it directly to the writer for that week.  The schedule is posted on our website at:  Schedule

If you have a change of email address, please send it to John Cardoza.

Reminder from President Cindy:
