MEETING OF JANUARY 15, 2004

By Steve Yarbrough

Editor:  Dick Blanding

Joe Renati launched the meeting of the Los Altos Rotary club by leading the pledge.  One purpose of this ceremony is to remind our diverse amalgam of Rotarians that we are all united behind the rule of law.

Seth Manning led us in “Zip-a-dee-doo-da.”  The purpose of this ceremony is to remind all the busy Rotarians that we should sing and not take ourselves too seriously.

Father Bill Rewak provided the thought of the day from Mother Theresa.  The purpose of this ceremony is to remind all Rotarians that we may be swimming upstream, but we must keep swimming anyway.

Cindy Luedtke presented visiting Rotarians and Guests.  By the way, Cindy, President elect, is also chair of the nominating committee for next year’s board of directors.  She has a great slate of Rotarians for election soon.

President Al advised that he received 23 responses from the club assembly. Many of your suggestions will be implemented by the board.

Nine members were recognized for 100-percent attendance:

Bob Adams

Dick Duhring

Hardy Jones

Ginny Lear

Joe Lo Conte

Mary Marley

Sandi Whipple

Steve Yarbrough

Al Ligtenberg

It’s easy to get makeups for attendance by participating in a committee meeting or visiting another club.  Turn in your proof of participation or mention that you attended another meeting to club secretary John Cardoza.  He will give you credit.

The winning poster for our District was submitted by a student at Almond School.  See it on the website for Rotator issue dated 12-18-03.

RI President Johnathon Majiyagbe will be speaking on 2-13-04 at the Fairmont Hotel n San Jose.  This club is buying tables.  Sign up ASAP with Ginny Lear.  Tickets are $50 each and the event starts at 6 p.m. with a no-host reception, followed by dinner at 7 p.m.  Black tie optional.

Dude Angius of the RAP committee advised the club of the new Rotarian Fellowship for Fighting AIDS program.  This club should seek a goal of 100 percent participation in this program, Dude urged.  You might even say Dude tried to bribe fellow Rotarians to participate by passing out Dude bucks as a matching grant to ten Rotarians!

Shelly Potvin reminded all of the Friday night social at Tracy Murray’s home, plus the progressive dinner on Saturday, Jan. 31.

Irene Preston discussed the Rotacare food delivery with Dan O’Donnell who said it was quick and easy.   The project consists of driving from home to a local restaurant, taking the food to be donated to the volunteers at the Rotacare clinic, visiting with the volunteers for as long as you like, and going home.  Rotacare, now in the El Camino Hospital campus area, serves walkin patients who have no form of health care.  Volunteers are needed for February.

By the way, Irene Preston is the artist who has prepared President Al’s chocolates for those who choose chocolates instead of wine for the President’s Club gift.

Barbara Duncan, who now works for a terrific company, the Rudolph and Sletton Construction Co. in Foster City, presented President Al with a check for $5,464 from the company’s Leo Jancing Fund.  Barb had nominated our club as a recipient for an award, which is an employee/employer matched charitable contribution.  The club was stunned!  What a wonderful gift.  Thanks Barb.

Chuck Lindauer encouraged Rotarian participation in the Sister Cities program, and invited all to join.

Sam Pesner used Jerry Moison as his easel and reminded all that the annual Rotary Art Show is May 15-16 and that he is putting the job assignments down.  Call him to volunteer for a particular task.

Shoshana Zimmerman presented her 5-minute talk and we learned that Shoshana, a naturopath, hosts a radio show, writes a column, is an author and former hospital administrator.  She is a policical activist who has a daughter and grandson.  Finemaster John Sines charged her $50.  Welcome Shonshana.

John also got $ from Jane Reed, Larry Madsen, Mel Kahn, Barb Duncan, and Mike Spence.

Luci Rasmussen introduced the speaker for the day, Stanford Professor Dr. Robert Siegel.  Dr. Siegel’s presentation involved the efforts underway in Tanzania for the battle against AIDS.  He introduced Matt Craven, of the group Students for International Change, which went to Arusha town, Tanzania, and helped distribute the RAP committee’s book.

Ukimwi, the Swahili word meaning “loss of protection is the body,” is decimating the African sub-Sahara.  Dr. Siegel advised that 24.5 million are now infected on that continent.  They all will die in the next 10 years.  This is a plague of biblical proportions, said Dr. Siegel.  The student committee has launched a project to translate the RAP committee book into Swahili and to distribute 8,000 copies to all schools in Tanzania and have a few copies left for distribution to health care centers.

Dr. Siegel invited Rotarians to attend the Feb. 28 conference on international health at Stanford.
