MEETING OF December 9th, 2004

Writer:             Mary Prochnow
Editor:              Dick Blanding

The holiday spirit was felt in the room.  Last week's honoree, DUDE ANGIUS led the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE and SETH MANNING led the group in a rousing rendition of RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER (or the Quadruped with Crimson Proboscis if you read the handout).

DAVID DYE gave the thought for the day with a quote similar to: Everything that needs to be said has already been said but nobody was listening so say it again.

PRESIDENT ELECT MARLENE COWAN introduced one Sunnyvale visiting Rotarian and MARLENE, ROY JONES, STEVE ANDERSON, DAVID SMITH, STEVE YARBROUGH & MARLIS MCALLISTER each introduced guests.

BRUCE CANN presented a banner from the Southernmost Rotary Club at Pt. Arenas, Chile to PRESIDENT CINDY.

PAST PRESIDENT & FOUNDATION CHAIR GINNY LEAR presented new PAUL HARRIS recognition to JEAN MORDO, VALERIE CARPENTER & JOHN CARDOZA.  SAM HARDING received +3 recognition, BEN MCGANN +2, GUY FARTHING +6 and DICK HENNING +7.  Congratulations to these generous Rotarians who are allowing the work of the Foundation to be carried out around the world!

GINNY reminded those who have not yet made their annual donation to the Foundation to get it to her by the 31st of this month.  'Tis the Season to do everything that you can to bring about a World of Peace-what better way than through the support of our own Foundation!

After having been bumped for several weeks by of a full agenda, LOUIS BOREL gave us his introductory five minute talk.   Louis revealed that he was born in France in the Vichy- Perrier region. He was the eldest of six children.  He left home for Paris, where he studied the wonderful art of pastry making.  He was drafted into the Nigerian war, worked in Nairobi, and in 1963 was married in Paris.

He moved then to San Francisco and worked at The Fairmont Hotel, the Hilton, at Pebble Beach and as a Manager at an Acapulco Hotel. In 1975 he returned to manage the Holiday Inn in Palo Alto, then the Le Baron.  He then acquired L'Omellette in Palo Alto and changed the name to CHEZ LOUIS.  LOUIS has two daughters and two grandsons, is already an active Club member and we are happy to have heard his story!

BAIDRA MURPHY extracted fines in spite of the Holiday Season.  DENNIS YOUNG joined the President's Club as he popped with pride over having just returned from visiting all four of his grandbabies and their parents. Each of Dennis and Bobbie's sons is now a partner in the world's third largest law firm after this week's Gray/ Cary merger.

RHONDA WENTZEL also joined the Club while proudly announcing that her stepdaughter had recently passed the Bar.   DICK HASENPFLUG announced that he was celebrating one of those big zero birthdays next week as he, too, joined the President's Club.   BILL MOISSON shares the date with Dick, so he too was fined, while twin Jerry escaped in absence.  VAL CARPENTER volunteered a fine in honor of an anniversary and the birthdays of her daughters.  JEAN MORDO also became a PRESIDENT'S CLUB member in celebration of the final vote tally.  MEG SOLERA was the final volunteer celebrating the mailing of the last college application by her daughter.

PRESIDENT CINDY announced that the year's second, mandated Club  Assembly would be done over several meetings rather than as an entire January meeting.

As Director of Club Service /Operations, JERRY TOMANEK began the process.  JERRY announced that consideration is being given to moving the meetings to the Los Altos Golf and Country Club.  Jerry is asking for your input and questions about the move. E-mail Jerry @ jerry@tomanekfamily.com or you may send him an anonymous note.   Issues presented were cost of improvements to the City facility , potential growth of the Club,  and the absence of facilities rent.  Our Club bylaws require a vote and there will be time for the presentation of opposing views, as well, at a January meeting.   Express your opinion!!

PAST PRESIDENT DICK HENNING presented the Rotary moment.  DICK began by mentioning the upcoming GSE team to Japan. If you are aware of an employed, 25-40 year old interested in such an exchange contact DICK!  A long-time advocate of Women in Rotary, DICK again made that the topic of his moment.  It is DICK's opinion that ROTARY would have died had it not been for the influx of women. He suggested that women do 70% of the work of the Club, and he highlighted the contributions of our first female president, MARGE BRUNO.  MARGE led with gusto, initiating Partners and working energetically in a hands-on fashion.

MARGE designated GINNY LEAR as the GUY SHOUP CLOCK award winner for her contributions to the Club as she revamped the ART SHOW, saving the Club an annual $60,000.  DICK also mentioned that he awaits the day that a woman becomes RI PRESIDENT!  Thank you, DICK.

Membership chair LARRY CHU, the younger, introduced new Blue Badgers and their respective sponsors.  LOUIS BOREL & DICK HENNING, PAT GRAY &ROY JONES and BO KEARNS &STEVE YARBROUGH.

JOANNE BYRNE reminded all that the Holiday Party is this Wednesday, December 15th from 6-9p.m. at the Jesuit Retreat House.  Fr. BILL REWAK warns that there has been a water main problem near the entrance, so take care and go on to the rear parking lot.

LEE LYNCH reminded us the see the wonderful Train Display at the History Museum, which was put up by DICK BLANDING.

PRESIDENT ELECT MARLENE introduced MAJOR DOUG TOLLERUD of the SALVATION ARMY.  We had a Bell Ringing contest, to start, with MONA ARMISTEAD the winner, closely followed by the enthusiastic trio of DON WITT, CINDY WEMYSS & MICHAEL SCHNEIDER.  MAJOR TOLLERUD then spoke of the history of the SALVATION ARMY and its mission.  It was founded by a Methodist minister in 1878 in the East end of London.  The Salvation Army opened one of the first AIDS hospitals in Africa. It educates 22,000 children in Pakistan.  It has been in Santa Clara County since 1888, it has 225 beds for the homeless in San Jose, takes in $350,000 annually from the kettles, of which we raised $842 last year.  It is the largest social service agency in the country and you can find even more information at their web site @ www.tsagoldenstate.org   Have a jolly week!    Remember the Foundation!
