MEETING OF AUGUST 19, 2004
By John Sines
Editor: Dick Blanding
Three guests, no visiting Rotarians and most of the Club found their way to the KRAUSE CENTER FOR INNOVATION at Foothill College where GAY KRAUSE, the CENTER, and FOOTHILL COLLEGE hosted our high tech luncheon.
SANTA CLAUS AND THE HOMELESS
Next week we will be visited by District Governor RON SEKKEL, who may be dressed as Santa Claus or as a homeless person. So if you see someone dressed like Santa or a homeless person on Thursday, August 26, take that person by the arm and insist that he or she accompany you to the meeting. Do not take no for an answer.
HANDBOOK DEADLINE
Thursday, August 26 is the deadline for revising pages for the new 2004-2005 Handbook. The pages are available at the entry.
LAREF MAY GO MORE INTERNATIONAL
The custom is to channel 10% of LAREF distributions to international recipients. The World Service Committee has requested an increase to 20% for 1004-2005. JEAN MORDO explained that one gets more bang for the buck outside the U.S. CINDYPREZ suggested there are various ways to provide more money for international recipients, such as raising more money. She welcomes emails and further dialogue on the subject. LAREF has yet to decide.
SYNCHRONICITY
LAUREN McFALL’S U.S. Synchronized Swimming Team is about to get under way, with the finals schedule for television at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 27. In the meantime, read her daily report on her blog at: Lauren's Web Log (Webmaster's note: Since our meeting yesterday, Matt Cabot has posted a comment on the blog, and he wrote a good one. Will you be next? Just click on the link above, then click on "comments" (which will have a number in front of it), then click on "or post anonymously" (to avoid having to get a username and password). Write your comment, include your name at the bottom, and then click on "publish your comment." This allows you to communicate with Lauren in Athens at virtually no cost to you!)
TODAY’S PROGRAM
For every age, there is an icon. For the Greek and Persian Wars, it was PHILIPPIDES, the runner. For the French Revolution it was MARIE ANTOINETTE. For the American Revolution, it was GEORGE WASHINGTON. And for the Information Age, it’s HUGH RIDDELL. HUGH subjected himself to a course in Photoshop at the KRAUSE CENTER and achieved uncommon success. We understand he’ll soon be back for more.
STEVE GRUBER
Webmaster Extraordinaire, presided over an introduction to the world of the Rotary Web. Wherever you may be on planet Earth, the Rotary Web is the best starting point for practically everything related to Rotary. STEVE finished up by reminding us of the need to have anti-virus software and/or internet security, not just to protect ourselves, but to protect others as well.
Voices in the Peanut Gallery were heard to proclaim JEAN NEWTON’S design of the ROTARY AIDS PROJECT page to be the most visually appealing in the presentation. That page is at www.rotaryaidsproject.org
Alta Vista Interact needs a Liaison!
A liaison is needed to work with the Interact Club at Alta Vista High School. The liaison will be a resource to the students involved with Interact & help them with their projects throughout the year. The Interact Clubs will organize & manage their projects themselves & the liaison is there to assist with any direction or support that they may need from our Rotary Club. Interact meets once a week, usually during lunch. Please contact Baidra Murphy if you have any questions. (650) 948-8910 or baidra@prochnowrealtors.com.
