MEETING OF AUGUST 12, 2004

By Mary Prochnow

Editor:  Dick Blanding

OUR PRESIDENT RETURNS FROM THE
NORTHERN REACHES OF WISCONSIN!!!

PRESIDENT CINDY was back in fine form, rested and smiling having satisfied her cravings for family gatherings (she and Dave have siblings sufficient in number to field many a team), and home state cheeses.

PAST PRESIDENT FIROOZ led the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE, and JOAN ROSSELLE led the singing of HIGH HOPES.

Apropos of his attempt to photograph all Rotarians in a digital format,  MIKE HARRIGAN's Thought for the Day was a quote from Mark Twain in the Sacramento Union in July of 1866...addressing the fact that one is never satisfied with one's own image, which quote led to  Mike's most frequently heard comment " I don't photograph well."

A cell phone was heard ringing, and again a cell phone was heard ringing.............boo /hiss!!!

President CINDY bore gifts from the White Clover Dairy where she got her start toward the top of the business pyramid.  Gouda for PAST PRESIDENTS ROY LAVE & STEVE ANDERSON who conducted the meetings in her absence and Wisconsin Blue for LOUIS BOREL  who had dared to challenge President Cindy's claims of the superiority of Wisconsin cheese.

Past President DICK BLANDING introduced the Advanced Scouting "Venture Crew 37" which we sponsor.  LEADER KATHLEEN NICKOLLS introduced several of her crew, who thanked the Club and spoke of their service work and their recent adventures while backpacking in the Grand Tetons.

This year's  ROTARY FOUNDATION chair, PAST PRESIDENT GINNY LEAR outlined the various levels of giving recognized by the Foundation.  The $100.00 sustaining membership  is expected of every Rotarian, every year,  in order that the Foundation might continue its amazing work throughout the world. ( including matching grants to some of our own great projects!)  The double sustainer ($200.00) is an expectation of our own District 5170. A PAUL HARRIS FELLOW has given a cumulative $1000.00 and the 5170 PAUL HARRIS SOCIETY is composed of those who have given $1000.00 in one year. Multiple PAUL HARRIS fellows are given for multiple cumulative $1000's. PAUL HARRIS BENEFACTORS have made a gift designation in their estate plan.   Even if you can't repeat all of that with your eyes closed be ready when Ginny and her co-chairs ROY JONES and PAST PRESIDENT BOB ADAMS invite you to participate in this year's drive. As GINNY said, " Rotary is not a spectator sport".

Following this, came the presentation by long time ROTARY FOUNDATION TREASURER & PAST PRESIDENT WYATT ALLEN to our latest PAUL HARRIS FELLOW; DAVE DE MATTEI.   Welcome to the Fellowship, DAVE!

Red Badger PAUL SHUTZ introduced himself to the club. PAUL was born on a Dairy Farm in Massachusetts to a Swedish father and Greek mother. He moved to Palo Alto /Redwood City in 1960 and then attended Campbell High School. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Vietnam War. He later graduated with a degree in psychology and obtained his MFCC. He  became an expert in non-profit management and is currently  Director of CHAC.

PRESIDENT ELECT MARLENE COWAN reminded all to edit the profile in the Handbook/Directory. No one else knows if you have mastered a great new hobby or sit on an important local Board, so e-mail Marlene.  Next Thursday is the deadline for changes.

MARLENE also reminded us that next week's meeting is at Foothill College in the Krause Center for Innovation.  If you picked up a map or know your way, plan to arrive by noon and look for Heinz Blenneman or Pat Gray, who will hand out free parking passes for Lot 4.   If you are uncertain of the location, join the carpoolers. Led by John Cardoza, the caravan will depart the Garden House at 11:45.   The program "Rotary and the Web", will be presented by our Webmaster STEVE GRUBER.  You will come away understanding the mysteries of RI-CAS ( formerly known as Club Mate). You will then have easy access to the online Handbook, your personal attendance and financials. Bring your new PASSWORD (which you procured from John Cardoza in the last six months)

Remember the AUGUST 19TH MEETING IS AT FOOTHILL!

MARY MARLEY chair of the LAREF contributions committee is looking for grant applications. The deadline for review is October 1st.   Get your applications online. Remember that LAREF now makes distributions only twice yearly so if a group with which you are involved anticipates funding make sure that they also anticipate the deadline!

TOM LISTON is looking for Poker players. Buy-in is $50.00.  At the Garden House September 17th, 7:30- 11:30

MIKE SCHNEIDER was the master of fine extraction. DENNIS YOUNG volunteered for a fine.  His second son has now been named partner at Gray, Cary, Ware and Freindenrich is San Diego.  Dave and Chris are both now partners!   Congratulations, Dennis.  WYATT ALLEN, BRENDA NIEDERT, &  JEAN HOLLANDS were also recognized.

PAST PRESIDENT SAM HARDING in a ROTARY MOMENT paid tribute to the Supreme Court decision which led to the membership of women.  Our club's first was Elizabeth Barkley in 1986, followed by Marge Gratiot and Mary Prochnow (same day) and Marge Bruno- all in 1987- 88.  SAM then invited all of the women members to stand for recognition.

      MAINTAIN YOUR BRAIN

Today's speaker was Dr. Elizabeth Edgerly, Area Program Director for the Alzheimer's Association of Northern California.  Dr. Edgerly is originally from Maine, sings in a Chorale , has a husband and five year old son.  She is a licensed clinical psychologist who has worked with caregivers and persons with dementia in nursing home, day-care, in-home care and acute medical settings.  Her presentation was well composed and equally well  presented with helpful slides and printouts of those slides.  She described Alzheimer's disease, its risk factors (age, genetics, history of head injury, vascular disease etc).  She spoke of care issues, research and the Association.   Mental activity ( writer's note:  Rotary prevents Alzheimer's! ) and  a heart healthy diet with lots of antioxidants are just two of the preventive measures that she recommended.   This program received many justifiable kudos after the meeting!

Now, DON'T FORGET: NEXT WEEK'S MEETING is at FOOTHILL!!!

Have a wonderful week and IMAGINE a World of Peace...

The LAREF Contributions Committee will be considering grant applications soon. If you know of an organization that you feel would meet LAREF’s funding criteria for local giving and that you think would be worth the Committee’s consideration, please visit the LARC Web site for the Guidelines and Grant Application. A Grant Application will be considered only if submitted on this form.

Applications must be submitted prior to October 1, 2004 for Fall Funding consideration. There is no assurance that funds will be available for any or all Grant Applications. Please send eight (8) copies of your Application and all supporting information to the Address for LAREF at the bottom of the Application Form.

If you have any questions, please contact Mary Marley, Contributions Committee Chair.

Webmaster’s Note:  Although we often refer to our club accounting software as “Clubmate”, that name has been retired by Rotary International, which now calls it either RI-CAS or RI-DAS, depending where it is being used.  RI-CAS stands for Rotary International Club Administration Software, and RI-DAS stands for Rotary International District Administration Software.  When you go to the “member services” link on our home page and click through to the RI-CAS page, you will not find any reference to Clubmate there, but don’t worry, because it’s the same software as it used to be.  To get your RI-CAS password from John Cardoza, click here:  john431@earthlink.net

Rotary Centennial - Feb. 23, 2005

Question:  Why was San Francisco the second club in Rotary, considering that the first club, Chicago, was located 2,000 miles away?

Answer: The formation of the San Francisco Rotary Club was not the result of a plan by the Chicago Rotary Club to expand Rotary.  There was a bit of luck, and a lot of determination and hard work that created the world's second Rotary Club.

The luck involved a chance meeting between San Francisco attorney Homer Wood and Chicago Rotarian Manuel Munoz in a San Francisco hotel.  Both men were in the lobby of the hotel when they happened to strike up a conversation.  Munoz told Wood about a new type of business club in Chicago, and how each member represented a specific business or profession.  Wood thought that the idea also would work in San Francisco, and he wrote a letter to Rotary Founder Paul Harris, asking permission to start a new Rotary Club.  Paul Harris and the rest of the Chicago Rotarians agreed, and in 1908, the San Francisco Rotary Club received its charter.

Homer Wood and another San Francisco Rotarian are given much of the credit for starting the third Rotary Club in Oakland, and the fourth club in Seattle.  Homer Wood also asked his brother, Walton Wood, to form the fifth club in Los Angeles.

The first 10 clubs of Rotary, and the years they were founded are:

1.  Chicago - 1905

2.  San Francisco - 1908

3.  Oakland - 1908

4.  Seattle - 1908

5.  Los Angeles - 1909

6.  New York - 1909

7.  Boston - 1909

8.  Tacoma - 1910

9.  Minneapolis - 1910

10.  St. Paul - 1910
