MEETING OF APRIL 15, 2004      

 

 

 
District Governor Don Allen presents the first place award in the District 5170 Rotary Centennial Poster Contest to 10-year-old Sara Koyanagi, who was sponsored by the Los Altos Rotary Club.  Sara, who attends Almond School, received the award at last weekend's District Conference. 

The posters were required to express the concept of:  Providing service to others in the community and in the World.  Sara's poster was chosen as the winner for Los Altos Rotary and submitted to Rotary District 5170, where it also won.  This poster will be entered into the US national competition with posters from other districts throughout the United States.

JOHN MCDONNELL led us in song. We had no visiting Rotarians, however. JEAN MORDO, VAL CARPENTER,SHELLEY POTVIN, CRES MCFALL,AND STEVE YARBROUGH had guests in attendance.

 

PRESIDENT AL announced a special Board meeting on the 28th of April at 7:30 a.m. By-law revision is the subject of the meeting.  He also commended the Club on an improvement in attendance.   

 

PAST PRESIDENT MARGE BRUNO announced that  the  LOS ALTOS LIBRARY ENDOWMENT is hosting Guest speaker Firoozeh Dumas, reading from her book FUNNY IN FARSI. The event is at the Library Thursday April 22nd 4:00-5:30. Free admission.    

 

PAST PRESIDENT DUDE ANGIUS invited all members who are interested in learning more about RAP (Los Altos Rotary AIDS Project) to attend a special meeting at the Chamber office this coming Thursday, April 22nd at 11:15. Make a note, this is a great chance to see if this is the committee for you!    DUDE also asked that any of us who might know someone attending the Osaka convention next month contact him. RAP needs help transporting some well-packed materials.   

 

LAREF PRESIDENT STEVE ANDERSON  announced  candidates for  a LAREF vacancy. They are SHIV SHASTRI, MARION TAVENNER  and LEE LYNCH. Nominations from the floor will be accepted at next weeks ' meeting.   LARRY CHU was the MASTER OF FINES . He wished DAN DUTTON ( and JOHN SYLVESTER,in absentia) a Happy and fine-free birthday.   FIROOZ GHAFFARI, SHOSHANA ZIMMERMAN and CINDY WEYMSS made contributions with LARRY'S encouragement.   

 

JULIE ROSE invited all to attend the Chamber EXPO, Thursday, April 22nd at the LOS ALTOS YOUTH CENTER. 4-7PM.  See what's new in our local business community!Julie also passed along an e-mail from PAST PRESIDENT GEORGE PERHAM.  George had walked two miles the morning of his note and is feeling better all the time. BEST WISHES to GEORGE!    

 

Cupertino Rotary Club is sponsoring a ROTAPLAST MISSION to Antigua, Guatemala this June. The Mission of ROTAPLAST is to provide free reconstructive surgery for underprivileged children and to advance research in the prevention of cleft lip and palate. There is limited availability so if you are interested contact Jim Walker. Dates are June 25th -July1st. Cost is $1529.00 double occupancy.  Talk to anyone who has made one of these trips and you will know that this trip will make you appreciate Rotary as you have never done before and change your life to the positive!   

 

Hayward South Rotary Club is sponsoring a Wheelchair Basketball and Silent Auction on May 7th, 6:00p.m.  at Cal State Hayward Contact Debby De Angelis  510 885 3038 for further information.      

 

The  day's speaker was  Michael Marlaine, Development Director of NASA Research Park.  He was introduced by ROLAND PAYNE.  AMES RESEARCH has been at the Moffett site since 1939. Now the research park has been transformed into a world-class cooperative research and development center for government, academia, non-profits and industry. This innovation in "human capital development"  is unique. UC, CARNEGIE-MELLON, SAN JOSE STATE, FOOTHILL DE ANZA COMMUNITY COLLEGE , WOMEN IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING and MATH, and TECHNOLOGY FOR MINORITIES are just some of the groups partnering at the site. They are working to interest young people in the harder sciences and technology and have accomplished wonderful partnerships to this end.  What a great resource in our own backyard!
