MEETING OF OCTOBER 16, 2003

Rotator Writer:  Mary Prochnow
Editor:
  Dick Blanding

…..A beautiful Autumn day in Los Altos set the stage for the day’s meeting. RICK GLAZE led the group in a spirited version of  “BRING BACK MY BONNIE TO ME”

STEVE SHEPHERD had the very appropriate thought for the day which he heard at a golf tournament (?????STEVE at a golf tournament????) Local Realtor Mickey Shaevitz delivered this quote but the author is unknown. It is titled ‘IF YOU WANT TO BE HAPPY”. “If you want to be happy for an hour; Take a nap. If you want to be happy for a day; go fishing or play golf. If you want to be happy for a month ; Get married and go on a honeymoon. If you want to be happy for a year; inherit a fortune. If, however, you want to be happy for a lifetime; LEND A HAND.”

PRESIDENT- ELECT CINDY LUEDTKE introduced visiting Rotarians and guests, many of whom came to get shot. (DR. BEN MCGANN and dedicated ROTACARE staff were on hand to dispense flu shots.)

PRESIDENT AL reminded us that nominations for the Community Service Awards are due on November 3rd and that we should read the bulletin board because not all announcements are made orally.

MONA ARMISTEAD offered the first opportunity for vocational service. There will be a CAREER FAIR at Alta Vista High School on November 14th and Rotarians with experience in Education, Technology, Health Care, Public Service, the Arts and the Trades are invited to share their enthusiasm with the students. Contact MONA.

MARY MARLEY says that there are still opportunities for mentors, readers and tutors for elementary, middle and high school students through PARTNERS FOR A NEW GENERATION. Contact MARY.

JOAN ROSSELLE reminded all of the upcoming A SANTE’ event which we are sponsoring in conjunction with the Sunnyvale Rotary Club to benefit ROTACARE. The gourmet experience is $50/person, scheduled for October 30th at the Historic Del Monte Building in Sunnyvale. 5:30-8:30.   For ticket information call 408- 522 8217.

MEG SOLERA introduced Interact President ELISE LAW, who enthusiastically outlined her Club’s commitment to the WHEELCHAIR FOUNDATION. They are going to be doing bake sales, car washes and other events in order to raise money for this worthy organization, and they look to us for support.  Congratulations to MEG,ELISE and the INTERACTORS for their enthusiasm!

Finemaster BAIDRA MURPHY collected from several members for their presence in the LOCAL NEWSPAPER. BRENDA NEIDERT paid willingly for the chance to share her excitement over the fact that she has realized the dream of opening her own company; PREMIER INSURANCE SERVICES. BELLA BERLLY, recently back from a trip to a Vancouver business seminar was clipped for having appeared in a hiking catalogue. SHELLY POTVIN paid a fine to talk about her cell phone collection project. SHELLY has collected over 10,000 phones which go back to the manufacturer, are refurbished and then given to victims of Domestic Violence to insure their safety.  Recently, SHELLY’S company, Coldwell Banker, took this project on and will collect phones at each of their several Bay Area locations. Congratulations, SHELLY on a wonderful job!…..JOHN SYLVESTER, ALAN LAMBERT AND RICK GLAZE each paid for their successful contributions to the recent BUS BARN production of the FOLLIES.

PAST PRESIDENT GINNY LEAR introduced the day’s program, which was an introduction to various issues and candidates for the coming local election.

GEORGE STANLEY, CHAIRMAN of the EL CAMINO HOSPITAL FOUNDATION spoke first in favor of MEASURE D. This bond will pay for half of the $300,000,000 cost of a new hospital. The balance will come from reserves and individual donation. The hospital must meet a 2008 deadline for earthquake retrofit and states that building new is cheaper than retrofit work would be.

FOOTHILL - DE ANZA COLLEGE TRUSTEE candidates were up next.  ANDREA LIEBERMAN is an incumbent Board member in favor of local control of revenue, a balanced budget and creative revenue generation.

HAL PLOTKIN told his own amazing story of having been a high school dropout who worked full time from 14 years of age to help his single Mom. He later graduated from high school, spent six nurturing years at Foothill, graduated from college and realized his dream as a professional writer. He would now like to give back to the College District.

Candidates for the Elementary School Board rounded out the program:

BILL COOPER sent a two minute video outlining his experience and aspirations for the District.

AL HILL outlined his construction and finance background, which he believed would add value to the Board and lauded our own Rotarian and Superintendent MARGE GRATIOT, as well as her fellow administrators for their job well done.

MARGO HARRIGAN who is an incumbent and is spouse of our member MIKE HARRIGAN, expressed her desire to serve this Top Performing District as it faces budget cuts, building and the retention of its existing, talented staff.
