MEETING OF MAY 8, 2003

By Cindy Luedtke

HE’S NOT JUST WHISTLIN’ DIXIE… On his best behavior and in his best voice, Al Lambert led the group in a fine rendition of Suwannee.

Mountain View Rotarian and PNG Committee Member, Judy Hannemann, gave an inspiration appropriate for the occasion about volunteerism, followed by a memorable phrase which went like this.  “You may only be one person in the world, but you can be the world to a child.”

ELLEN FLANAGAN announced that there are two short weeks to the end of the Polio Plus fundraising drive.  The Los Altos club is only $3,000 from its goal of $45,000.  Seth and Marilyn Manning have generously offered to match funds up to $1,500 to assure our success.  With that news Ellen and her husband, Kevin gave a push start with the first $300 for matching funds.  Members that are considering making a donation can do so now and get double the results, so don’t delay.

PARTNERS FOR NEW GENERATIONS

Today was a special meeting held in honor of the volunteers that have made Partners for New Generations a successful program to serve youth in our community.  Outside of the normal lunch crowd were 40 volunteer guests.   In front of a full house of 150 attendees, Mary Marley, Chair of this year’s PNG committee, presented the day’s program.

Partners in Education-  Elementary

The first line of order was to acknowledge the many years of dedication and work of NANCY TRAFICANTI for Partners in Education.   Without her commitment of time and effort in coordinating tutors for the nine elementary schools in the district over the past seven years, PNG would not have been successful.  In fact, its going to take three people to attempt to replace her.   Nancy will still be involved with Partners in Education on a consulting basis and is looking forward to having more time to pursue other interests.

Mary mentioned other PNG committee members who have made notable contributions to the program this year including BOB AND LOIS ADAMS, JOANNA MEDIN, JOHN CARDOZA, MONA ARMISTEAD, MONIQUE KANE, JUDY HANNEMAN, AND CINDY LUEDTKE.

MARGE GRATIOT followed by expressing her positive feelings about how the tutors with the Partners program have become a positive force in the schools in her district.  She encouraged the volunteers to continue their good work.

High School Mentoring

The focus of today’s program was on the progress of expanding the High School Mentoring Program.  With continued financial support from the Los Altos Community Foundation and the special help of a two-year grant from the Packard Foundation,  PNG has been able to offer a mentoring program  to both Los Altos and Mountain View High Schools as well as continue its program at Alta Vista High School where the program started.  The program supports three part-time counselors, one at each campus, who select and match mentors to their mentees and provide expert assistance in training mentors.

HINDA WEBER, a psychologist with the school district oversees the program and is responsible for measuring results from the program which will be crucial to its continued success.

Next, three mentor/mentee matches described to the group their unique experiences with the mentoring program and why it works for them.

RICH FISCHER,  Superintendent of the High School District gave us words of encouragement for the Partners program and  the need to continue our efforts.   Statistics show that kids with mentors do better in school and making the transition to college and work life.

ROY LAVE of the Los Altos Community Foundation and Nancy Glaze of the Packard Foundation were able speak a couple minutes about their organizations that have been so supportive of  the PNG efforts.

Child Advocates

BUD OLIVER rounded up the presentation with a short description of the Child Court Advocate Volunteer opportunity that exists in Santa Clara County.  Most of us heard about the program from Judge Len Edwards who spoke to our group a couple weeks ago.  Bud and his wife Ann, along with several other dedicated Los Altos Rotarians have been in the program as advocates for years now.    For those of us that may be interested, this club has a good core group of advocate volunteers to draw answers to questions we may have about being a child advocate.

In Closing,  Mary again thanked all the volunteers who have made a difference to the children in our community and urged them to continue and bring others who may be interested in becoming a tutor or mentor to a child.
