MEETING OF JUNE 5, 2003

By Dick Blanding

With Pres. Mary doing a real estate deal and Pres.-elect Al off in Australia for the International Convention, we dug deep into the list of past presidents and found  P.P Roy Lave to run today’s meeting.  Some may have preferred Cindy, our President-elect-elect, but Roy did a fine job, despite the passage of many years since his Engineer’s Regime ended.  He even remembered to end the meeting with a little philosophy, as is Mary’s habit, with the admonition to “Imagine a world living in freedom!”  Well said, Roy.

Songwriter Al Lambert created a whole new topic for discussion, by scratching out “Gal”, and substituting “Pal”, in the old time favorite “For Me and my Gal”.  The membership wobbled through it nonetheless, many scratching their heads over what it all means.  Past President Boo offered a fine thought:  “Those who really want to do something, find a way; those who don’t, find an excuse.”

Sandy Whipple sold all eight cases of leftover beer glasses on the spot, which provides a little insight on our weekend activities.  Blue Badger Al Ligtenberg told about his three and a half months in Nepal recently, bringing solar cooking and drying to some four to five thousand people there.   He also took advantage of his location to visit thirteen Rotary clubs, and to arrange for a thousand of our Rotary Aids Project books to be translated into Nepalese and distributed there.   Interestingly, Rotarians in Nepal are trying to form ten more clubs, so they can reach the magic number of 55 clubs required to form their own district.

Jack Heidmiller has two or three slots left, on the list to help serve Chef Chu’s chicken salad at the downtown Art and Wine festival, and earn a few thousand dollars for the club.  Dates are July 12th and 13th.

Much to his surprise, Hugh Ridell was gamely preparing to offer his five minute talk, when shouts from the floor called for substitution of Jack Kelly into the lineup.  It was a little like the British Parliament for a few moments, but Jack rose to the occasion and delivered a solid talk in exactly five minutes.  He came from Buffalo NY, which qualified him as an expert in the art of show shoveling.  The Air Force brought Jack to California in 1965 as a Nuclear Weapons Specialist.  He then conducted substantial research into the colleges which might best fill his needs, by reading numerous issues of Playboy magazine.  He finally settled on San Jose State, where he graduated in 1972.  Despite longtime dreams of playing professional baseball, Jack entered the mortgage business, and enjoyed a successful career.  More recently, he has discovered the joys of service to the community, first as a board member, then as President-elect of the Board of Directors for San Jose State.  He has lived in Los Altos since 1979.  Jack comes to our club as a highly motivated volunteer, eager to “give back” to our community, which has provided much for him and for us all.

Usually mild-mannered Larry Chu, Jr., revealed an inner might as he wielded a heavy hand in netting hundreds of dollars from unsuspecting (and suspecting) Rotarians in fines.  In the process, some interesting facts came out.  There will be a party to celebrate the new Rotacare clinic (Joan Roselle), Wyatt has two, proud new kindergarten graduates, There are 191,000 lawyers in California, including his son (courtesy of Brian Ward), Al Ligtenberg’s daughter is getting married today, and Kelly Hudson is embarking on a five day bike ride for Aids.

Our program today was the wrapup report on this year’s Art Show, led by Grand Poobah Jerry Moison, who came dressed fit for the occasion in a Pasha’s head adornment of solid gold.  Baidra named the winners of the Young at Art awards, and presented checks to two young artists in attendance.   The art from the program is now on display at several local banks.

Jerry said ours is the artists’ favorite show of the whole year, because they feel to catered to and respected.  This year was our 28th annual show.  It featured 197 artists, required 244 specific job assignments, used over 885 man hours of work just during the show alone.  (All readers know well by now that probably more than half of this work was performed by women, thus obviating the need for the more cumbersome terms of person-hours, or man/woman hours.)  Jerry then named the forty-four committee members who assisted him this year, and said that this was the first show which did not require use of the famous shovel in the streets after the parade.  Well done, security!   He gave the sales income and fee totals, and expenditures, the net of which was well above last year’s total.

Next year there will be an effort to reduce expenses by looking for corporate or personal sponsors to cover the costs of some items like beverages, water, box lunches, etc.  Ginny Lear then gave the dates for next year’s event, those being May 15th and 16th, 2004.  She asks that if you see an artist’s work that you think should be included in our show, contact Ginny and she’ll take a look and provide an invitation.  She then read some Thank You notes from artists, again expressing their gratitude for our caring and attention to their needs.  Finally, Jerry asked that we be sure to say thank you to the two dozen restaurants and merchants who made donations to help with the art show.  Their names are on a yellow sheet  provided at today’s meeting.  The list of restaurants is available at:  Restaurants

Thanks again to Grand Poobah Jerry, and to Organizer Ginny, and to all of the club members, family and friends of our club who made this year’s show another spectacular success.  As Boo suggested, everyone just “found a way to make it happen.”
