MEETING OF DECEMBER 18, 2003

By Matt Cabot

Editor:  Dick Blanding

'TIS THE SEASON to CHEER:  SETH MANNING lead the crowd in a rousing Jingle Bells. I thought I was at a Cal-Stanford Big Game when he asked us all to bring out our keys, and make some noise.

'TIS THE SEASON to REFLECT:  SETH even supplied his own thought for the day, which with our frenetic pace seems appropriate:  Finish what you start.  LOU BECKER gave us another piece of good advise to reflect on [paraphrased] what you have you will loose, but what you become you have forever.  My take on that is “Why do we spend so much time on protecting what we will loose, and so little time on what we can not loose?”

We had 3 visiting Rotarians, one transferring Rotarian, and 10 guests.

'TIS THE SEASON to THANK:  President Al thanked Fr. Bill Rewak and his staff for the wonderful Christmas party that Fr. Rewak hosted at the Jesuit Retreat House.  It really was a wonderful party.  It was a good time to sit with friends, eat wonderful food, and listen to great music supplied by our own JOHN SYLVESTER.

'TIS THE SEASON to ANNOUNCE:  President Al announced that he passed the halfway mark in his Presidency, and thanked us (I guess for not impeaching him, I don’t know.)  We are the ones that should thank him for his tireless work on our behalf.  He said the board was hard at work, and would soon set a slate of new directors.

'TIS THE SEASON to WONDER:  He also notified us that no one won anything in the Rotary Foundation drawing.  However those of you who purchased tickets really did win, because you know that your contributions will soon be hard at work helping solve the world’s woes.  Not a bad thing at times like this.

'TIS THE SEASON to REMEMBER:  Someone (I think it was DAN DUTTON) reminded President Al to remind us that we will be dark the next two weeks, so let me remind you.  Got it?

'TIS THE SEASON to THANK:  President Al gave one of his coveted Service Above Self awards to Past President WYATT ALLEN.  Congratulations, WYATT!!!

'TIS THE SEASON to GIVE:  STEVE ANDERSON enforced that idea through his well-honed Fine Master duties:  He got JOHN MCALISTER, who retorted with a hardy “Up Yours”, but in general most of the givers were a bit more gracious:  WYATT ALLEN, SANDY WHIPPLE, BRUCE CANN, PAUL CONARD, DICK DUHRING, JOAN KAVALARIS, PAUL NYBERG, and ROLAND PAYNE.  FR REWAK (became immune by identifying who Balthazar was. Hint: ‘’ 'Tis the Season.”

'TIS THE SEASON TO GIVE AGAIN:  Past President Steve Anderson presented Angela McCormack with a check for $2,500 to the Community School of Music and Arts.

‘TIS THE SEASON OF WONDER:  Our program today was a musical presentation by three talented young children, from the Community School of Music:  Franchesia Muscettola, age 7 and Daniel Gao age 5, both on violin, and Sarah Stanley,  on flute.

From Tracie Murray:  Rotary International is holding an Rotary Centennial Poster Contest as part of the Rotary Centennial celebration.  Children, ages 10 to 13, from Los Altos were given the information through their schools.

This poster contest focuses on providing service to others in the community and in the world.  The winner for our club is Sara Koyanagi, from Almond School.  She submitted her beautiful poster that has captured the spirit of community throughout the world.  Our club will present her with $100 as the Los Altos Rotary Club's winner.

After the meeting today I received a call from Dick Liewer re. the need for two or three volunteers to referee and coordinate sixth grade soccer for girls and flag football for boys at Covington School beginning in January at noon.  The school plans to have some healthy competition for these kids.  Time requirement about 45 minutes Tues., Wed. and Friday.  Could you volunteer?  We need your help!  Call Dick Liewer to volunteer or ask any questions at 948-9148.  Thanks.

From Ed Sox:
I have joined the Oceanside Rotary club down here near San Diego. They are a
very friendly, hard working club, and the clincher was that they sing "smiles"
at nearly every meeting.
I thought you might be interested in the newsletter they send out each week.
There is a link to it at the bottom of this page. They have a couple of people
taking digital pictures during the meeting that really jazzes up the report.
Jo and I are well, and enjoying Southern California, our kids, and our
grandkids. I miss my friends in Los Altos, especially in Rotary, but I must admit I
am really enjoying this next phase of our life

From Ginny Lear:
In Saturday's SJMerc. sports section, it is announced that Lauren McFall has been named Captain of the US Synchronized Swimming Olympic Team. As we know, she is Paula and Cres McFall's daughter. Their first major event is the Olympic qualifying tournament in April in Athens. The team is currently ranked third in the world behind Russia and Japan.
Who wouldn't be proud of that accomplishment!
