MEETING OF AUGUST 7, 2003

By Clyde Noel
Editor:  Dick Blanding

The meeting started with SETH MANNING recommending Pres AL TRAFICANTI for governor, and then asked everyone to sing “God Bless America.”

KRIS CASTO provided the thought for the day and accepted the assignment as an awesome responsibility.

“I am blessed to know everyone here and I want to share the thought of young men and women putting their lives on the line for us,” she said. Kris also acknowledged First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt’s adage, “Do the things you think you can’t do.”

Not as many visiting Rotarians this time of year because of vacations, and Rotarians with guests are quickly introduced before announcements are started.

Prez Al reminded everyone that the days to buy a ticket for Rotary Day at the A’s August 16, is short. It’s only $12 a ticket, but do it now.

DENNIS YOUNG, the cotton candy maestro, is looking for a volunteering Rotarian to handle the Rotary booth at the City Festival on August 24th.  Cotton Candy is neat to eat. See Dennis to volunteer.

Fellowship director ELLEN FLANAGAN introduced JOANNE BYRNE and SHELLY POTVIN as members of the Family of Rotarians. Ellen suggested when we meet the only cost to come is a bottle of wine and maybe some nice eating goodies.

LARRY CHU Jr. announced it is Rotary softball season again and sent around a clipboard for people to sign up.

IRENE PRESTON is looking for people to deliver food to the Rotacare clinic. The food is donated and volunteers are asked to deliver it.

STEVE ANDERSON announced the Los Altos Rotary Club is giving a check for $15,000 to Rotacare as a gift from all Los Altos Rotarians.

STEVE SHEPHERD provided the results of the recent Rotary golf tournament. Joanne Byrne shot a 114 for low gross and received the new and improved women’s trophy. JERRY MOISON representing his brother BILL MOISON, who won last year, was to give the men’s trophy to BOB RAYL, but he was also absent so Joanne collected both the men’s and the women’s trophies. Bob shot an 88.   Next year’s golf event will be held May 7, 2004.

Two new blue badgers were made at the meeting. BENDA NEIDERT and JACK KELLY became new blue badgers and their sponsors, BOB ADAMS and DICK HASENPFLUG hugged them, peeled the red swatch off their white badges and then took a bunch of pictures.

LEM SUMMEY was fine master again and started squeezing Steve Shepherd’s bankroll on his new promotion of Senior Vice President at the Bank of Los Altos. Rotarian ROB HOLDEN left the Bank of Los Altos as president and joined Jim Wall in his new venture in Palo Alto. Steve is assuming some of those duties.

“Now I have to work for a living.” Steve said. Modestly offering $10 for his fine. Summey refused that by saying Steve could do better so he offered $50 and it was accepted.

Perez Al was proud to announce 45 years of marriage and he joined the president’s club. WILL CORKERN joined the president’s club because he had a birthday and GEORGE DAI offered $50 for a birthday and anniversary.

Bob Adams provided 1/2 a check ($50) for his 48th wedding anniversary and Lem Summey sat down pleased with his extractions.

Speaker for the day was Jayne Booker Dies, executive director of Design Response from Campbell.

As a non-profit, the organization improves the physical environment of other non-profits and schools that serve needy women and children by partnering with agencies and corporations.

The Design Response mission is to improve the environment and change lives in the process. They have helped more than 175 agencies since it started in 1992.

Several of the agencies it has worked with are:

Achieve Kids Palo Alto. The organization helps children with severe emotional disturbances. If the environment looks welcoming, people feel welcome. If the space is efficiently planned, many and varied individual needs can be met efficiently.

Dies quoted Joe Simitian, the California State Assemblyman, as “The way you look is the message you send out about the value of the service you provide.”

Design Response has a staff of three and it has secured more than 1.5 million in donated services and product. That money is distributed to   other non-profits such as” Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula in Redwood City, East Community Resource Center in San Jose, and the Children’s Pre-School Center in Palo alto.

Dies said Design Response is actively seeking partnerships and she gave suggestions on how Design & Response could become a partner with the Los Altos Rotary club.

The meeting ended 10 minutes earlier than usual and most Rotarians seemed pleased as they continued to hang around and network.

Message from Sandie Whipple:  Dues are now due and payable. The amount is $180. If you have not paid the kick out dinner fees, they are $48 each and all members are required to pay whether they attended or not. Please send payment to LARC, 854 Renetta Ct., Los Altos, CA 94024.
