THE 2002 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS LUNCHEON

Scholarship Program Chair MARLENE COWAN did a wonderful job of presenting this year's scholarship winners. Approximately $10,000 is made available annually for scholarships as a result of your hard work at the Art Show. No Rotarian children are allowed to be the recipients of these scholarships.

This very hard working committee recruits at 9 local high schools, distributes applications and informational videos, reviews applications, sends invitations and gives three full afternoons for the interviewing process. They also hosted the winners at the luncheon. In addition to MARLENE, the committee members are: BOB ADAMS, MONA ARMISTEAD, DICK BLANDING, MATT CABOT, JOHN CARDOZA, DAVID DYE, ROB HOLDEN, KURT HUEG, MEL KAHN, SETH MANNING, CAREW MCFALL, BEN MCGANN, ROLAND PAYNE, MIKE SCHNEIDER, JAN SCHROEDER, SHIV SHASTRI, MIKE SPENCE, AND JERRY TOMANEK.

Special thanks were given to NANCY TRAFICANTI for her production of the scholarship video.
PETER HARDING, son of PAST PRESIDENT SAM AND JANET spoke of the effects of the Rotary scholarship on him. It was great to have PETER with us.

MONA ARMISTEAD handled the introductions for the MIDDLE SCHOOL OUTSTANDING STUDENT AWARDS. EGAN INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL, BRENDA DYCKMAN introduced winners HANNAH LIPPE and RUSSELL FIELD. BLACH INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL, ARTHUR HARRIS introduced ABBY DAMM and DUSTIN DAMONTE.

Next followed the HIGH SCHOOL WINNERS OF COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS. This is a COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP and the criteria are first; SERVICE, second; ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, and third; FINANCIAL NEED. Eighteen students made it to the interview process from which seven winners were selected. The funds are sent directly to the student's college and released to the student to pay for tuition and books. There were two winners from ALTA VISTA this year. Introduced by HINDA WEBER, SPECIAL SERVICES COORDINATOR, was PRENISHA SHIELDS. PRENISHA was mentored by PATSY OUYE of BANK OF LOS ALTOS through PARTNERS FOR A NEW GENERATION and plans to attend CANADA COMMUNITY COLLEGE to study English and Journalism.

Our next scholarship was special in several ways. PAST PRESIDENT GINNY LEAR announced that this year's gift to PRESIDENT FIROOZ GHAFFARI would be given as a scholarship to a student bound for FOOTHILL COLLEGE. Each of PRESIDENT FIROOZ'S three children attended FOOTHILL on their way to UC and FIROOZ'S dedication to education made this a most appropriate honor for him. The recipient of this very special scholarship is THANH (WENDY) HUYNH who plans to study pre-law at FOOTHILL.

The next honoree hails from EASTSIDE COLLEGE PREPARATORY HIGH and was introduced by DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT KRISTEN MICKEY. ERIC MADRIGAL, recipient of the SECOND ANNUAL CHARLES COWAN SCHOLARSHIP, plans to attend UC BERKELEY to study Civil Engineering.

LOS ALTOS HIGH PRINCIPAL GEORGE PEREZ introduced scholar LINETTE PARK, who plans to study Art Instruction at UCLA and MING DANG who plans to become a teacher or doctor after study at STANFORD or UC BERKELEY.

PATRICIA HYLAND, PRINCIPAL OF MOUNTAIN VIEW HIGH SCHOOL, introduced KATHY SANTOSO. KATHY plans to attend UCLA to study INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS and CHINESE. PRINCIPAL HYLAND also introduced IVAN ROSALES who hopes to become a teacher or lawyer after study at UCSB.

As an added note, MARLENE COWAN points out that ROTARY provides more scholarship money than does the US government's FULBRIGHT COMMISSION.

Congratulations to each of the recipients, their parents, teachers and mentors for their hard work, community service and inspiration to each of us. Thanks to the committee for representing us so well in this important club activity.

The meeting also featured a short animated CD produced by Los Altos High School students about the latest entry by the school in the national robotics competition. The robot itself was present by the front door of Garden House before the meeting. LAREF donated $1,000 to help the team build the robot and make the trip to the national competition.
