MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 6, 2001

By Mary Prochnow
Editor - Dick Blanding
Webmaster - Steve Gruber

Members were greeted by the "Red Dragon" flag of Wales as we continue with PRESIDENT FIROOZ on the "Parade of Nations". The National Anthem of Wales was played as well, as members listened with interest and appreciation. Welsh native MARILYN BRATMAN expanded our collective knowledge of Wales. Marilyn was accompanied by her husband, our prior colleague, Rotarian BOB BRATMAN. First thing to know about Wales is that is not IN England. It is a small mountainous place, birthplace of Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta- Jones. MARILYN wore a Daffodil pin and BOB the traditional leaf pin as is customary in the spring. It was a joy to hear this native of Wales share the pride she feels in her homeland.

SETH MANNING is finemaster this month and his theme is confession. BRUCE CANN confessed that he had just had the enviable experience of sailing off the coast of British Columbia with his five oldest grandchildren. KAREN FOX confessed that she has learned, in her relatively short time as a host parent, that fifteen year olds really do know more than she does. (Don't let Alexy know of her confession if you should see them about town)

Next June 23-26th is the Rotary International convention in Barcelona. Please contact MARY PROCHNOW if you want any information. In addition to the many things to do and see in Barcelona, Bilbao and its Guggenheim Museum and the Costa Brava are very nearby.

The RED BADGE CLUB announced that they will be holding a charity auction on November 8th , so get your piggy bank loaded up and/or decide on an exciting item which you are able to donate for the event. (Vacation home weekends, gift certificates, etc, etc).

Don't forget, PERSIAN NIGHT at our President's home this Saturday, September 15th.

On a sad note, Past District Governor NEAL HOFFMAN was in a small airplane which crashed last weekend as NEAL was returning from a presidential conference called by RI PRESIDENT RICK KING in Salt Lake City. NEAL is in the burn unit at Valley Med. No calls or flowers at this time please, but send your positive thoughts and hope for a speedy recovery his way.

Our own JEAN HOLLANDS took a break from the extensive and impressive media coverage of her new book, SAME GAME DIFFERENT RULES, to be today's speaker. JEAN'S company, Growth and Leadership Center, coaches men and women from many major valley companies. When she noticed that 85% of the women who were referred to the Distinguished Executive Program were referred because they were seen as intimidating, she began the Bully Broads program. In this program she advised women on methods for being assertive rather than aggressive. As Jean asserts, neither men nor women, should be abusive and she certainly does not suggest that women go backwards after fifty years of progress in taking leadership roles. The program and the book are for women who worry about their intimidating feedback…. The topic elicited some spirited questions, which spilled over after the meeting. A couple of respected, accomplished, Non-Bully Broads suggested that perhaps one reason for the preponderance of females referred for intimidating behavior might be that the behavior is tolerated or encouraged in men and perhaps even that men were the ones doing the referrals. Regardless of one's position on the "Bully Broad", Jean did a wonderful job of representing her book and her ideas and getting us to talk and think about an interesting topic. It was a pleasure to see her from a different perspective!

President's Message

First, I am most thankful to be able to share one sentence from Carolyn Schutz' most recent update on PDG Neal Hoffman's condition: "All in all, all news has been good."

Mankind Is Our Business, and as our "business" grows, so does the need for bigger membership. We invite you to share the gift of Rotary and bring a friend as your guest to our meetings. The Club will pay for your guest and all you need to do is let Lee Lynch, our cashier, know. Once your guest has attended our meetings three times, you could propose the candidate for membership. Alex Ng, our Membership Director, is ready to help if you have questions or want the application forms. Alex loves hearing from you!

Steve Shepherd, our talented Social Chairman is working diligently to make sure we will all have a lot of fun during the Persian Evening. And what a great job he is doing! If you haven't signed up for this outdoor event, you now have till Sept.12 to let Steve know. At this time we have an opening for 6 more guests.

Come break bread with your friends. Enjoy the fellowship under the moonlight, listen to the music whispering a story told a thousand times, drink some wine and taste the Persian dish "Fessenjaan". You will enjoy the evening!

-Firooz
