MEETING OF OCTOBER 11, 2001

By Steve Gruber

The international theme continued today with a rousing rendition of the national anthem of Australia by BRUCE CANN. Will PRESIDENT FIROOZ run out of countries before the end of the year? Stay tuned.

The Rotary Picnic is on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 12:30 p.m. at Heritage Oaks Park. Call JOANNA MEDIN for details.

The Red Badge auction on Nov. 8 is off to a great start with the unveiling of a few of the items, including:

1. "Priceless" tickets to hear Madeline Albright at the Celebrity Forum.
2. A $500 weekend for up to six persons in Carmel.
3. Dinner for four at Chef Chu's, featuring a duck caught by BEN MCGANN.
4. Two tickets to a Giants game next year.
5. A weekend for up to six persons in Santa Cruz, valued at $400.
6. A sculpture by HARDY JONES valued at $400.

ELLEN FLANAGAN said the proceeds from the auction will go to the Wheelchair Foundation and Rotacare.

FIROOZ says you can still sign up for the Avenue of Services dinner on Oct. 24 and the club will buy you a free dinner. Membership Chairman ALEX NG urged everyone to bring a prospective member to a meeting.

Our latest new member is BRUCE ASKARI, whose classification is real estate broker. He lives in Los Altos Hills and works at Referral Realty in Sunnyvale.

JACK HIGGINS presented today's five-minute talk. He is a Michigan State Medical School graduate, who practiced in Chico for 20 years before joining the Camino Medical Group in this area. He has pioneered a type of medical practice called video house calls, in which the patient and physician talk via video. He was a member of the Chico Rotary Club and has volunteered his services with Rotacare.

MARLENE COWAN told us that Rotary International will be sponsoring a speech contest and a poster and essay writing contest. Contact MARLENE for details.

BOB ADAMS explained several World Community Services projects, including a medical clinic in Guatemala, a bakery in Peru, and two education programs in India. For further details, see the WCS page at www.losaltosrotary.org/wcs.html. Bob said WCS is also looking for additional members for the committee.

Speaking of the club website, it has expanded by two pages, including the one on WCS noted above. The other new page is about Rotacare, and is at www.losaltosrotary.org/rotacare.html. We are putting more content on the website to show what this club is doing for the community. We also hope to expand the pages on Partners for New Generations and add new pages for both Interact clubs. There are two reasons for doing this: First, this is an absolutely free means of communication with the rest of the world (We've already paid the bill for this year), and second, we want to win another Rotary International award for the website.

What else can you find on the website?
1. A list of all of the club directors and officers and the LAREF directors.
2. A list of all of the members, and e-mail addresses for nearly everyone. (If you are out of town and you need to contact one of the members, just call up the members web page and click on the e-mail address. Works with most browsers.)
3. A list of upcoming programs and events.
4. Everything you ever wanted to know about the art show, including some great graphics.
5. Directions to the meetings for out-of-town visitors.

Today's speaker was Dr. Malini Alles, who is the chief executive officer of Stree, a Palo Alto non-profit that specializes in "global investments in women." The group is working to change policies and start grassroots initiatives worldwide to help women with health and education. For more information, take a look at Stree's website, www.streegiw.com.
