MEETING OF MAY 3, 2001

By Steve Gruber

The district assembly is coming up in two weeks and FIROOZ GHAFFARI wants to know if you would like to take part. The assembly will be held in San Jose at 5 p.m. on May 17.

CINDIE EBERHARDT took home a dozen golf balls for coming closest to the pin during last week's golf tournament.

I never wanted to be a Senior Active, and now I don't have to be because Rotary International has dumped that classification and also one known as past service. Everybody is now an active member, or an honorary member, and there is nothing in between. The rules also have been changed to allow 10 percent of a club to be in one classification, such as banking. Actually, it is well known that the fastest way to join Rotary is to go to work for the Bank of Los Altos.

SETH MANNING presented Paul Harris Fellow awards to KAREN FOX and DICK HENNING. DICK now has four sapphires on his award, which puts him pretty close to the lead in the sapphire derby. The sapphires are awarded for additional contributions above and beyond the original $1,000 for the award.

SAM HARDING said the Christmas in April project renovated a nursery room at Foothill College, and that LUCY RASMUSSEN, CINDY DAY, CINDIE EBERHARDT, SHELLY POTVIN, BOB RAYL, ROB HOLDEN, and KURT HUEG took part.

Nominations for the LAREF board will be announced on Thursday, and nominations from the floor will also be taken that day.

If you would like to work at the Art Show, send a fax to SHELLY POTVIN at 941-3094.

We are sponsoring a reception for former Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt on June 15, and a signup list will be available at the next meeting.

Our speaker for the day, RON BLATMAN, studied architecture and city planning, and has worked in commercial development. He is using his background to develop a TV series with Channel 54 called "Cities That Live, Cities That Die." The purpose of the series will be to visit cities that have done a good job of preserving and improving themselves, and also to look at the cities that are bad examples. Ron said Los Angeles and Atlanta are examples of cities that attract enormous investment for commercial development, but do not use it well. On the other hand, he said that Portland has made few mistakes during the past 30 years, and has created an inner city that is a pleasant place to be.

President's Message

Early on Sunday, I visited the Saratoga Rotary Art Show. It was a beautiful day, customers were beginning to arrive, the artists were starting to do business, and Rotarians were everywhere, doing all the jobs that must be done to make their show happen. The Saratoga Rotary show is in its 42nd year. They were our mentors 26 years ago. This is a great fundraiser, and over these many years, both clubs have built fine art shows with wonderful reputations among the artists and the public.

With that inspiration, I want to encourage each member to make the weekend of May 19-20, a Rotary Art Show weekend. Be available to do whatever is necessary. That is our Rotary tradition, and we want to assure our new members that they are very important to our success. There are no rookie jobs. Everything counts. Bring a family member or friends to help, too.

Art Show Chair Tracie Murray, and a full complement of individual chair people, has been organizing the various parts, which will make the whole show look effortless that weekend. It's the only annual fundraiser we have. It's fun, it's tiring, and it's very successful.

Over the past 25 years, through the proceeds from sales of art, the Los Altos Rotary Club has given nearly $600,000 to charitable community and international projects. We have made important differences in many individuals health, safety, and education, along with leading or participating in community projects. If you haven't sent your volunteer sheet to Shelly Potvin, please do so today. We need you.

See you Thursday,
Ginny
