MEETING OF MAY 17, 2001

By Wyatt Allen

Pres. GINNY began the day searching for BOO BUE, our resident Norwegian past-president since May 17th was allegedly Norwegian Independence Day (we need to do some recruiting before next year…I noticed no Norwegian accents during the meeting!).

ROY LAVE led us in the pledge in BOO's absence. CINDIE EBERHARDT shared the fifteen philosophies of life she recently heard ROBERT MONDAVI (very good direction for all Rotarians - especially as leaders to inspire rather than rule). SETH MANNING led us in "You Are My Sunshine" (was that a weather forecast for the art show?)

ANNOUNCEMENTS -
-- SAM HARDING let us know that STEVE ANDERSON'S latest hip surgery was successful. By the time you receive this, he will be home recuperating.
-- TRACIE MURRAY stated everything was ready for "Fine Art In The Park." More volunteers are always welcome for this weekend, May 19th and 20th!
-- BEN McGANN asked Rotarians for help on behalf of ROTACARE. On June 2nd, help his needed at St. Athanasius Church, 160 N. Rengstroff to sort medical supplies.
-- JOANNA MEDIN announced a Rotary family picnic on June 10th at Serra Park in Suunyvale. Get your reservations payments in soon.
-- GINNY LEAR called for additional nominations for our Endowment Board to serve four-year terms. The election will be held June 14th.
-- Tickets are still available for BRUCE BABBITT speaking at De Anza College on June 15th for whom Los Altos Rotary is holding a reception prior to his talk.
-- KAREN FOX ask to have this announcement included: ALEXEI KRYLOV, a 15-year-old from St. Petersbury, Russia, will be arriving as a Rotary Youth Exchange
Student to attend Los Altos High School. He will be staying with KAREN FOX for his first home stay. Needed for ALEXEI: (1) 10-speed men's bicycle in good running (or peddling) condition; and (2) PC with at least 200 MHz with windows 98.
If you can help, let KAREN know at kfox@scu.edu or see her at the next meeting.

RECOGNITIONS -
Birthdays announced included SHIV SHASTRI (31), DAMON SCHECHTER (29) and WALT SCOLEY (somewhat older than SHIV and DAMON combined!) who joined the president's club to GINNY'S delight. Other Rotarians joining the president's club included JACK HEIDMILLER and VICTORIA EMMONS.

SPEAKER -
CHUCK BULL presented Rotary International's program regarding the world's growing population dilemma. Using a video presentation, CHUCK illustrated how the population of the world is increasing at an ever-increasing rapid rate. Population was beginning to have such an impact on the world and its resources that the United Nations brought leaders of many countries together in 1994 to address the concerns of over population. Agreement was reached for the need to:

¨ Extend and improve reproductive health and family planning services
¨ Expand population policy to include economic development
¨ Improve of the status of women
¨ Link environmental and sustainable development to population growth
¨ Invest in health and development of children - especially girls
¨ Emphasize male responsibility for sexual, reproductive and parenting behavior

Soon after, Rotary International formed the Rotary Institute For Population and Development (RIFPD) to influence control of population growth. One of its roles is to encourage Rotarians to undertake projects that directly impact population growth and sustainable development, especially in poorer, third world countries. Past efforts have shown, for example, there is a definite link between the practice of contraception and smaller family size. Since many poorer countries have no family planning or birth control philosophies or practices in place whatsoever, education and change of sexual habits can produce tangible results toward stemming population growth.

This presentation was not without controversy. When CHUCK stated the RIFPD's position with regard abortion as a method of population growth control was totally neutral, it was pointed out that the wording could be perceived as not at all neutral, but anti-abortion. He was not very receptive to suggestions to change the wording and responded that we were picking nits. There were several members who disagreed. It was interesting, nonetheless, to learn Rotary's activity in regards to concerns over the ever-increasing population of the world.

President's Message

Great art! Great Cause! The 26th annual Los Altos Rotary Fine Art Show! Thank you to each of the club members, their spouses, and friends, who are making this event possible. We will have a personal celebration of our success on June 7. For now, enjoy being a part of this very special weekend, supported by our own community and people from the surrounding areas.

At our meeting of May 31, we will be privileged to meet one group of beneficiaries of our annual art show fundraising efforts. This is the group of high school seniors, selected by our club for Los Altos Rotary Scholarships. This year's recipients will receive a total of $10,700. Each year, every dollar given, is a result of proceeds from the sales of art at our show.

PLEASE DON'T WAIT FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO DO THIS: A Rotary Volunteer is needed starting now, once each week, to print about 20 copies of the Rotator from email, and promptly hand mail them to those 20 people remaining on the regular mailing list. Rotary will pay all costs, we just need a little bit of someone's time. Please call Ginny or Firooz for more details.

At a special board meeting on May 10, three prospective members were approved for orientation, which Membership Chair John Sylvester is arranging. When orientation is completed, the three names will be published for your approval.

A reminder that 7500 Rotary California license plate orders need to be in to the District by June 30, 2001, in order to take effect. I have printed information available, or more information is on the District 5170 website at www.rotary5170.org.

See you Thursday,
Ginny
