MEETING OF MARCH 29, 2001

By Cindy Luedtke

PHIL ROSE opened on a positive note with some of the clever quips of which my personal favorite was, "You may even be on the right track, but if you sit too long, you'll get run over."

CRES MCFALL led a resounding rendition of "Take me out to the Ball Game" to start off the baseball season this coming week.

Two new members were welcomed to the Los Altos Rotary Club; KURT HUEG, sponsored by DICK HENNING, and JEFF SUNDQUIST, sponsored by JOHN SYLVESTER. Kurt is the Director of Marketing for Foothill College and Jeff is a local insurance consultant. Please take the time to welcome both to the club when you get the opportunity.

SETH MANNING and PRESIDENT GINNY recognized a number of members who have obtained multiple Paul Harris fellowships; DICK BANDING- 1 Sapphire. BOB ADAMS 2-Sapphires. WALT SCHOLEY-4 Sapphires and SETH MANNING, 2- Rubies. Congratulations and thank you, gentlemen, for your generous support of Rotary International over the years.

MICHAEL AHEARN of Alta Vista High School was introduced by BOB ADAMS. Michael has been honored as Teacher of the Year by the Los Altos Mountain View School District and was also nominated at the State Level for Teacher of the Year. Alta Vista was recently given the Model Continuation Award by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Alta Vista has had its largest graduation classes ever this past year. Michael took the time to say "Thank You" to all the volunteers from the Partners program and Los Altos Rotary, who have helped make this success possible.

With funds made available from the Los Altos Rotary Endowment Rund, the School recently purchased state-of-the-art, computerized audio/video equipment. The equipment is being well utilized by the students; In Michael's film making course, and kids are also using it as a school recording studio.

With the help of Web Master, Steve Gruber, the Art show poster is online. All the artists and media are listed on the website at www.losaltosrotary.org. Take a look when you get a chance to get a preview of our biggest event of the year.

April is Child Abuse Prevention month. Child Advocates is holding a candlelight vigil in downtown San Jose that is open to the general public. BUD OLIVER extended an invitation to participate in the LIGHT OF HOPE CANDLELIGHT VIGIL that will be held in downtown San Jose, across from the Fairmont Hotel at 7:30 PM next Tuesday , April 3. The purpose is to inform and highlight the plight of many children in our community. Judge Leonard Edwards will be the keynote speaker. The Cisco Singers and their children, a children's choir, and a live band will provide entertainment. It will be a fun and informative evening.

SAM HARDING has arranged for tours of the Kaiser Cement plant. They will be next Thursday, from 10:00- 2:00 PM and the following Tuesday, April 10, from 10:00-2:00. Contact Sam if your interested.

LARRY MADSEN announced the Annual Los Altos Rotary Golf and Poker Tournament to be held Friday, April 27th. The golf game will take place at Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course. The cost to golf is $50.00 including cart and $30.00 for the evening BBQ, to be held at Steve Anderson's home.

Through the generosity of DENNIS YOUNG , two tickets to Sunday's Giants game were auctioned off. JOANNA MEDIN took them off Ginny's hands for $40.00.

DUDE AND BARBARA ANGUIS were acknowledged for their 50 years of marital bliss. Dude paid the appropriate fine of $50.00 for that, but then promptly paid $50.00 to announce is daughter's engagement to be married.

GEORGE PERHAM paid a $2.00 acknowledgement for knowing guest, GEORGE HILL.

DICK HENNING cut to the chase and beat his fellow Rotarians in acknowledging his acquisition of a new Jaguar of classic proportions. Nice car, Henning. Was that really enough of a fine?

After a bit of prompting from the President of Rotary, the President of the Bank of Los Altos, ROB HOLDEN, announced ROY LAVE as the new Chairman of the Board of Bank of Los Altos. Past Chairman, STEVE HUNTON has moved to Arizona, and recently resigned as Chairman and from the Heritage Bank board. Seems he's quite busy these days, with too many other things, including two new grandchildren. Congratulations, Roy!

MARGE GRATIOT and her husband just got back from a Hawaiin vacation. She paid a fine, but that was just so she could brag that her daughter was just accepted into Harvard Business School.

DAVE MOORING from Rambus, was our guest speaker of the day. He spent quite awhile just explaining what Rambus does (there will be a quiz next week!). Rambus is a "Chipless" company that specializes in standardizing high speed interfaces for the semi-conductor industry by specifically working with high bandwidth chip connections. Their goal is to get more bandwidth out of limited memory "inside the box", meaning the computer space itself.

There was quite an extensive question and answer period after Mr. Mooring's speech, which meant there were members in the audience who were "with it " the entire time. The company's revenues generally come from royalties. Although the company is feeling the economic slow-down as with the chip manufactoring sector, they are fortunate as they have no inventory issues. Rambus is considered an R & D hub for the chip industry. Rambus recently took residence in their new office in Los Altos, so this was a "getting to know you" kind of talk.

Mark your calendars and invite a prospective volunteer to the Partners for New Generations Luncheon on Thursday, April 26. This year's program will be fresh and different and informative, so be sure to consider inviting a guest. We even have invitations that can be mailed to prospective volunteers at your request. Please contact Joanna Medin, Bob Adams, Ed Sox, or Cindy Luedtke with the name and address of your prospective guest.

President's Message

Here's this week's quiz. Answers will be collected at the door next Thursday.

What is an RDRAM? How is an SRAM different? Do you need either one to RAM-a-LAM? Which comes first, the tour of the Hanson Cement Plant or the Rotary Golf Tournament? Which one has prizes? Will Dick Henning take you to either one in his new car? Will he RAM-a-LAM? Did you miss the meeting last Thursday?

Mille Grazie! (No, that's not a new Rotarian.) Mille Grazie! That's a million thanks twice over from more than 100 Italians for a night. We send the Cioppino dinner team our appreciation for a great party on Friday. The food was fantastico, and the room looked like an Italian trattoria. A surprise visit by an actual Italian singer of Italian opera was followed by actual Rotarian Sam Pesnerino's stirring rendition of Giacomo Enne Binnestaucche (Jack and the Beanstalk.)

Doing my Presidential Duty…RI President Frank Devlyn wants me to tell you…A SPECIAL EDITION of our ACTION TEAM UPDATE has been posted to our web site at the following address: http://www.frankdevlyn.org/updates-english.htm

This SPECIAL EDITION is devoted entirely to the COUNCIL ON LEGISLATION. (It meets once every three years.) It is very important that each and every Rotarian have the opportunity to become familiar with the items coming before the COL and to post their comments, views, and opinions on our Council On Legislation web site at the following address: http://www.frankdevlyn.org/council.

Please help President Frank, Council Chair Cliff Dochterman, and Council Vice Chair Bill Huntley CREATE AWARENESS among all of our Rotary members so each may TAKE ACTION to voice their opinions and ideas on matters before the Council on Legislation.

There will not be a quiz regarding the information on the RI website. See you Thursday. Ciao!
Ginny
