MEETING OF MARCH 15, 2001

By John Sines

SILENT SPRING

Until JOHN MOSS bailed us out, there was no sound system to assist PREZGINNY in her efforts. Thanks, JOHN.

MARY PROCHNOW wants you to tell her what next year's programs should be about. So don't complain about the dull topics when they arrive. Come up with scintillating ideas now and give MARY a call or e-mail.

SHELLY POTVIN, still the blushing bride, has volunteered to be ARTSHOWPEOPLEPLACER. We should be getting our wish lists now. If you don't get yours in mail during the next week, call or e-mail SHELLY or you may be joining this intrepid reporter on the Saturday morning shovel-and-sanitation brigade.

KAREN RIVERS of El Camino Hospital and its School Child Health Program thanked LARC for its donation which she used to buy 45 jackets for school-age children in the area.

Los Altos History Museum opens this Sunday - go visit!

There's still time to sign up with your Rotary Partner to attend this month-ending cioppino feed. CINDY LUEDTKE has all the details.

LARRY GENTRY, President in 1952-3 and local architect who designed local schools and Rancho Shopping Center, died recently.

Proud father HARDY JONES announced that daughter KATIE just received a Fulbright Scholarship to study public health in Australia.

CHUCK HESS is a Presidential Fellow for generous giftgiving, and he also showed up.

TODAY'S PROGRAM

JOYCE JAMES and JO ANNE SANZERI told us about Elkus Youth Ranch, just south of Half Moon Bay, a working ranch devoted to educating children with special needs. Elkus Ranch also has a conference center designed for retreats and conferences to help you and your company or civic group break the mold and think outside the square (conceptual blockbusting).

EDITOR'S NOTE: If you change your e-mail address, please let us know as soon as possible. Please send all e-mail information to webmaster@losaltosrotary.org. If you do not receive an e-mail Rotator by Tuesday of any week, please let us know.

Also, we have posted all of the artists' names for the 2001 Rotary Art Show at www.losaltosrotary.org/artists.html. This page also includes websites for about 80 of the artists. Take a look at the artists' websites - they are an interesting place to surf the web.

President's Message

Art show volunteer sign up sheets arrived in our mail this week. It is not too early to plan your weekend of May 19 & 20. "All hands," and then some, are needed to keep our show the success and the favorite that it is among artists and customers alike. New member, Shelly Potvin, is the Volunteer Coordinator.

You have heard and read that the Los Altos History Museum opens this weekend. Please make every effort to visit, and marvel at this new community treasure. During the initial capital campaign for this Museum, three years ago, the Los Altos Rotary Club, through LAREF, made an initial contribution of $5,000 to this building. It is my hope that Rotary will provide further financial support to this most incredible, privately funded venture.

Los Altos Rotary is honored in the Museum's permanent exhibit upstairs with a shadow box on the "Los Altos Family Tree," as well as with our history written into a computer, accessible on a touch screen. Our fifty plus years of existence truly gives us a place in local history. Also, look for Sammy and Mel Kahn in that same exhibit.

Hope to see you there this weekend. If not, I'll see you Thursday,
Ginny
