MEETING OF JUNE 7, 2001

By Dick Blanding

Among the traditions dimming in today's society is the recollection of the words to "I'm Looking Over a Four-leaf Clover", as was amply demonstrated by our modest rendition of same. Keep at it, John; one day it'll be as familiar to us all as "Smile".

Among several distinguished guests today was Larry Chu Jr., being welcomed back from four years in Hong Kong by his proud dad, Chef Chu himself. Laurie Klein announced the club's notorious softball team will open its season next Monday, 6:15 PM at Cooper Park. The team needs batters, fielders, and rooters badly, so get involved now.

The big kickout party is June 29th, so mark your calendar and be sure your name is on the signup list. You're charged whether you can make it or not, so might as well come and have fun. Along with a pitch for volunteers to help serve meals at the Alpha and Omega shelter, was an announcement that Ellen Yamane had decided to take the surplus food left from our recent Artists Dinner, over to the shelter. Guess what? The scheduled food provider for that night had failed to produce, so the meal was doubly appreciated. Other food news: be sure to sign up for our club's booth, selling Chinese chicken salad, at the upcoming art and wine fair downtown.

A representative of the organization called World Neighbors was presented with a check from our endowment fund in the amount of $4464, to help start a potato processing plant in Kenya. Seth Manning passed on a request from our East Palo Alto Teen home for a kitchen table for six, with as many chairs to go with it as are available.

Two new members were welcomed with a standing ovation: Bob Fenwick is a rare identical triplet and electrical engineer who invented on-command video; David Dye is the Scout Executive for the District Scout Office. President Ginny announced she had attended the district awards dinner. Our club won the Presidential Citation again (if our club didn't qualify who would?) More impressive yet was the only Zone award presented to any club all evening, and it was made to LARC in recognition of having The Best Website in our whole zone! (A zone is a whole lot of districts, each of which includes a whole lot of clubs.} Great kudos to our Webmaster Steve Gruber, whose talents at web-siting are exceeded only by his talents as past Social Czar. Nice going, Steve!

Ginny announced the purchase of our own projector at a cost of $3500. for videos, CDs, and other presentations. Jerry Moison, last year's golf champ, presented the annual winner's trophy to Jack Emmons, Victoria's hubby, for his outstanding round of 76 strokes. Dr. Ben McGann joined the president's club, in honor of the volunteers who turned out to help sort pills last weekend for the Rotacare facility.

The program today was Art Show Chair Tracie Murray, extending great thanks to everyone for all of their enormous volunteer effort. She introduced next year's chair, Jerry Moison, and presented him with the traditional horse-sized pooper scooper, with a red ribbon around it. Five winners of our club's Young at Art competition were introduced, along with their winning art. A yellow sheet listing all the businesses which donated to the Art Show was circulated at each table. Please learn the names thereon, and remember to say thanks to them when you frequent their establishments. Tracie presented gifts of a picnic backpack with a bottle of J. Lohr cabernet to Lou Pesner, Sam Pesner, Larry Chu, Laurie Klein, and Ginny Lear, for exceptional contributions to the success of the show. Sam presented Tracie with this year's art show poster, signed by all the members, in appreciation of her outstanding job of leading us this year. Ginny announced early numbers on the results: 194 artists sold nearly $600,000 worth of art. We receive 10% of that, plus a fee of $300 per booth, totaling $127,000 less our expenses, yet another new record for the event. Congratulations and a big thanks to Tracie for a job very well done.

President's Message

What a great celebration of our 26th annual fine art show, and the members who made it possible! "Thank you" to 2001 Art Show Chair Tracie Murray for doing such a terrific job! A well-deserved "Standing O" for Tracie from all of us. Welcome to Jerry Moison, Chair for 2002.

"Service Above Self" in our Los Altos Rotary Club is what keeps it so highly active and vital. President elect Firooz Ghaffari is counting on a 100% member response to his volunteer opportunity lists, as he and his new board organize committees which begin in July. Have you returned your checked list to Firooz?

The World Community Service Committee had its annual planning meeting this week. The status of projects proposed, funded, or still pending were reviewed, and new projects were considered. Retiring WCS Chair Roy Lave will be giving a report to the club next week during the LAREF annual meeting. Election of two new LAREF Board members will also take place at that time. Your attendance is very important.

See you Thursday,
Ginny
