MEETING OF JANUARY 25, 2001

By Cindy Luedtke

It was a stormy day outside, but bright and cheery inside as President Ginny convened the meeting and asked for nominations for the Board of Directors. No additional candidates were nominated, and the six candidates nominated by the nominating committee will be on the ballot for the election on Feb. 8.

RUDY GRZIWOK was presented his blue badge today. RUDY is no newcomer to Rotary, and was a blue badge member of this club for many years prior to his current membership.

ROB HOLDEN's five-minute talk included memories of his days at Stanford when he was the goalkeeper for the soccer team. He grew up in Oregon, achieved Eagle Scout status, and is now the CEO of the Bank of Los Altos. He has been married for 15 years and has three children. ROB is coaching sixth grade basketball as part of the Partners program.

The Valentine Dinner will be held Feb. 8 at Chef Chu's. Please bring your checks for $35 per person to the next meeting.

ALAN LAMBERT auctioned off two tickets to the AT&T Golf Tournament, collecting $50 each from PAT FARRELL and JACK HEIDMILLER.

RICK GLAZE has produced a CD called "Silicon Cowboy," that officially goes on sale Monday. He offered to sell 10 of them after the meeting and donate the money to LAREF. If you would like to see what songs are included, go to www.amazon.com, then click on popular music and type in "Silicon Cowboy." There you will find that the CD is by "Rick Glaze and the Virtual Wafer Hot Band," and the first song is called "My Dot Com."

As if aging wasn't enough, birthdays took a further toll on ALAN LAMBERT, JOAN ROSELLE, and CRES MCFALL. LARRY MADSEN must have been out celebrating his birthday, as he was not present to pay his fine.

ELLEN YAMANE celebrated the equivalent of 16 cat years married to her husband, Kevin. They celebrated by escaping to Sorrento, Italy. She brought back a banner from the Sorrento Club and would like to go back soon and get the scepter she forgot as she was "treated like a queen" at the meeting by the all-male club. Later, on the same trip, she attended a Rotary meeting in France who sent best wishes to Los Altos with special greetings to Marge Bruno. Marge is fondly remembered as a host for a young exchange student from their town.

Next, President GINNY declared that the club assembly officially begin. President Elect FIROOZ GHAFFARI kicked it off with his invitation to club members to attend the District Conference to be held in Oakland April 6 through 8. Part of the District's Rotary Fun in 2001 includes having lunch with Mayor Jerry Brown and a tour including lunch on board the USS Hornet. The Rotary Aids Project will also be leading one of six forums, so be there to support their efforts.

JOHN SYLVESTER'S report had some good news and some bad news. The good news is; we have 10 new members so far this year. The bad news; 13 have left the club. Since about 50% (that's 6.5 members) have left because they've moved out of the area, we remaining members have been asked to kindly not move.

Operations Chair, ALEX NG reports that all is well: The new sound system is progressing and should be in place soon. BOB RAYL is a crackerjack at Sargent at Arms, even though he's a rookie, STEVE GRUBER and FIROOZ have successfully gotten the Rotator and, even most Rotarians, online. TRACIE MURRAY, the newest POOBAH, is heading the first Art Show committee meeting on February 7 at Los Altos Subacute. The meeting is to begin at 8:00 AM.

MARY MARLEY, our director of Youth Programs focussed on the activities of the three Interact Clubs we Sponsor. She was followed by CINDY LUEDTKE, who summarized the latest developments with the Partners for New Generations committee. The committee has found marked success with the PNG Café' Road Show Extraordinaire. They have future "gigs" scheduled in February with both Los Altos and Mountain View Kiwanis, but would like to reach more clubs and organizations, preferably with a Los Altos Rotarian 's introduction and "warm hand off". The group is also investigating more long-range plans to collaborate with the High School District and very possibly other community groups to develop a more formalized mentoring program in the High Schools to support the volunteers brought in by way of PNG's efforts.

BOB ADAMS announced he had a urgent request from Santa Rita Principal for a mentor for a sixth grade boy who needs an adults time and support for the balance of the school year. Subsequent to the meeting's adjournment, JOHN SYLVESTER stepped forward to accept this challenge. God Bless you, John!

BAIDRA PROCHNOW gave us an update on the East Palo Alto Teen Home. The home is in need of a vacuum cleaner, bedding for twin beds, towels and a kitchen set large enough for six to eight people. She also had a chance to visit with EPATH's founder and director, Sheila George. Sheila is in the midst of making arrangements for her "Positive Image Awards" night. This year she hopes to have Bill Cosby be the Honoree.

As International Chairman, PAT FARRELL told about our Rotary Scholar who is in Taipei. MARLENE COWAN has volunteered to work with International exchange students by coordinating their stays in the area. Thanks to the efforts of PAUL and LIZ NYBERG and sales of their latest book, Paint the Town, Sister Cities has been able to establish a scholarship fund. JANE REED will head this Committee.

BECKY MILLER updated us in the area of community service. Her plan is to create more Rotarian's awareness of the Rotocare Program and the important work it has done has been successful. VICTORIA EMMONS has been instrumental in making this happen.

There will be a meeting immediately following the regular Rotary meeting next Thursday, February 1, to focus discussion specifically on the club's interest in continuing to support the East Palo Alto Teen Home on a long-term basis.

Party Animal STEVE SHEPHERD announced future events. Chef Chu's Valentines Dinner will be held February 8 (Henning and Kahn as co-chairs). Back by popular demand, The Great Ciopino Feed will be held the evening of March 30. The event is chaired by Cindy Luedtke featuring the culinary arts of Luedtke, Kurt Hammerstrom , and Joe Renati. And don't forget the Annual Golf and Poker outing April 27 brought to you by the team of Larry Madsen, Steve Anderson, Dick Duhring, and Roy Lave. Mark your calendars and be there or be square.

Since time was scarce, JANE REED opted to present her report as the Los Altos Endowment Fund President until we meet again… which will be next week, February 1.

We may have made it through all the reports except a short interruption was made in the program to announce that a limb (sizeable, but not TOO big either) had fallen on top of Lem Summey's car. After Lem received the news and appeared to be unaffected by the announcement, the show went on. Hope it wasn't serious, Lem.

President's Message

Please be early next week if you can. Our guest speaker, Judge Len Edwards, will give his talk from 12:30-1:00 p.m., as he needs to return to work in San Jose. We will start the meeting at 12:20, and have our club business beginning at 1:00. Thank you.

The following week, February 8, we are pleased to have as our speaker, Steve Westly, founder of eBay. Later that evening, we will have our annual Valentine Dinner at Chef Chu's, beginning at 6:30. If you have not yet signed up, please call Dick Henning or Steve Shepherd. This is a great evening of fun, friendship, and fine food. Space is limited, so call now.

Many thanks to our Directors and project Chairs who gave such informative and enthusiastic reports to us on the activities of the club. It was a wonderful Club Assembly. Next Thursday, we will hear from LAREF and RAP.

This Club Assembly leads perfectly into the Strategic Planning Session that we have scheduled for Monday, February 12, in the Rotunda at the Jesuit Retreat House from 5-8:30 p.m. A sign up sheet will be passed during the next two meetings to allow us to set up properly. A buffet dinner will be available from 5:00 to about 6:00 p.m., to allow everyone to arrive from work. Promptly at 6:00, we will begin our session, which will be facilitated by Geoff Ball of Los Altos. The cost per member is $15, which includes dinner and the use of the facility. Everyone must pay, whether or not they have dinner.

We have a great Club, as shown by our Directors and Chair people this week. With so many new members in the past two years, it is good to look at our membership growth, our ongoing projects, and to have the opportunity to talk about new areas of interest. We encourage everyone to try to set aside this important time for your Los Altos Rotary Club.

See you Thursday,
Ginny
