MEETING OF FEBRUARY 1, 2001

By Wyatt Allen

BEGINNINGS
JOHN MCALISTER kicked off the meeting with the pledge, BILL REWAK provided yet another thought provoking thought for the day, and CRES MCFALL started us thinking San Antonio in June by leading us in "Deep In The Heart of Texas."

DIRECTORS' REPORTS (AKA a Continuation of last week's Club Assembly)
JANE REED brought us up to date on the Los Altos Rotary Endowment Fund (LAREF). Begun in 1978 to provide funds for charitable projects, LAREF has grown to $476,000 and investments are 48% equities and 52% fixed funds. LAREF now includes funds established for BOB LUNDQUIST (Partners For A New Generation) and CHARLIE COWAN (Scholarships) as well the PERHAM fund (East Palo Alto Teen Home). The 2000-01 contribution budget is $69,000 and applications are now available with an informative brochure to follow soon.

MARY PROCHNOW reported on the efforts of the Rotary AIDS Project (RAP) over the past eleven years. A planning session is scheduled for Feb 27 for the existing committee and the 32 members expressing interest for future efforts to determine the future strategies and priorities for this committee. MARY updated us on the current collaboration with the Sandown Rotary Club (Africa) informed us that much work is still needed in education about AIDS, even in the Untied States.

MEMBER NEWS
· BILLY Russell was in El Camino Hospital last week with a challenge with his heart. He is likely to be back home early this week so a card or call would be appreciated. Look forward to having you back with us at our weekly meetings soon, BILLY!
· GEORGE ESTILL has a new handbook, this time with his own picture by his name!
· MEL KAHN was awarded the "Walter and Marie Singer Award" for contributions to our community at the annual Los Altos Chamber of Commerce Salute to the Mayors Banquet. JULIE ROSE contributed a fine for her birthday in MEL's honor.
· RICH FISCHER, who has been stumping other clubs on behalf of "Partners for A New Generation," became a member of the President's Club for birthday and anniversary.
· FRANCIS LA POLL and GUY FARTHING have the same wedding anniversary (no, not to each other - the dates are different ?!?!).
· BOB RAHL was recognized for not having to go to work today….the first day of his retirement. Thanks, BOB, for all you have done for the people of Los Altos!
· The answer to this week's member trivia question is "Hunter College." The answer is where did MARGE BRUNO, BELLA BERLLY & JOHN MOSS' daughter graduate?

JUDGE LEN EDWARDS
For the past 15 years, Judge EDWARDS has been the presiding judge in the Juvenile Court in Santa Clara County. As a Los Altos resident, he has been a strong supporter of Partners For A New Generation. In 1986 he was one of the principals who initiated Child Advocacy in the county and has written a book, Child Abuse and the Legal System.

He is very proud of the Child Advocacy program that is one of the models for other parts of the country. Child advocates spend time with a child to provide a stable and safe contact outside their own family as well as represent a child while they are under the jurisdiction of the courts. Despite the wealth in this county, there are already some 1,000 advocates and 3,000 foster homes in the county….and that is not enough!

"Wrap around services" is the latest approach to providing assistance to children at risk. The approach is to remove the child from the inappropriate environment, help "fix" the child, "fix" the environment, and then put the child back with his/her family if at all possible. Some kids needs as much as 24/7 supervision that is achieved through a collaborative effort of an advocate, foster home, neighbors, relatives and representative of school and community. The child is "wrapped" with support form all sources possible. There are opportunities as a child advocate and/or providing foster home for a child. It is a very rewarding opportunity. Just ask ANN or BUD OLIVER or MARLENE COWAN.

And as for Judge EDWARDS, talk about a person who is passionate about his work! We can only wish there were more people like him in the legal system. If a few more of us began to feel such passion and volunteered as a child advocate or foster parent, it would be an wonderful investment in that child's future and a great reward for you.

From Baidra Prochnow: Sheila George, Director of the East Palo Alto Teen Home has been named as an honoree in the San Mateo County Women's Hall of Fame. The ceremony will be March 22 in Redwood City. It is $45 per person. All are invited to come.

The East Palo Alto Teen Home is in need of some items. The home has an on-going need for bedding, towels & kitchen wares (pots, pans, glasses). They also need school supplies for the girls including a dictionary, thesaurus & education materials.

Please contact Baidra Prochnow, baidra@sirius.com, for further information or to donate any items. Thank you.

President's Message

Next Thursday, February 8, we are pleased to have as our speaker, Steve Westly, founder of eBay. Later that evening, is our annual Valentine's Dinner at Chef Chu's, beginning at 6:30. Give Dick Henning or Steve Shepherd a call for reservations. About 15 seats remain available. A full house is always more fun!

Looking long range: We Want Your Vision: This week, twenty members signed up for the LARC Strategic Planning Session on Monday, February 12, in the Rotunda at the Jesuit Retreat House from 5-8:30 p.m. Please email or call me if you wish to attend. The sign up sheet will again be passed during the meeting next week to allow us to plan properly. A simple buffet dinner will be available from 5:00 to about 6:00 p.m., to allow everyone to arrive from work and have a bite to eat. Promptly at 6:00, we will begin our session, which will be facilitated by Geoff Ball of Los Altos. The cost per member is $15, which includes dinner, sodas and coffee, and the use of the facility. Everyone must pay, whether or not they have dinner. We encourage everyone to try to set aside this important time for your Los Altos Rotary Club. This type of all member planning will be beneficial to the club, and therefore to our community and our world.

Julie Rose, our Chamber CEO. made her generous birthday gift in honor of Mel Kahn receiving the Chamber's Walter and Marie Singer Business Person of the Year award at the Salute to the Mayor's Banquet last Saturday night. Past President Mel was introduced by our President elect-elect Mary Prochnow, last year's Singer recipient. Mel was so overcome by this new found fame that he took Mady and went to Hawaii for a week to rest. We'll look forward to seeing Mel next week. Past President Roy Lave introduced Los Altos Mayor King Lear, so there was lots of "good will and better friendships built" all around.

See you Thursday,
Ginny
