MEETING OF AUGUST 23, 2001

By Clyde Noel
Webmaster - Steve Gruber

After the usual introductory remarks by our Rotary President FIROOZ GHAFFARI, SAM PESNER inspired us by taking inventory of his stash and telling us about U.S. paper money and the fiduciary meaning by the man pictured on the bill.

After introductions of visiting Rotarians and guests by MARY PROCHNOW, JOHN SYLVESTER, belatedly asked us to "buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks" and root for the home team.

A little deflation for all of us came with the resignations of previous Rotarians, Dorothy Ponton, Peggy Buchanan and banker Jim Wall. Success often requires relocation for Rotarians.

MARY PROCHNOW did an honorable gesture when she turned over her $300 U.S. Treasury check for tax relief to the Rotary Foundation. With no such thing as a triple sustainer, Mary becomes a double sustainer.

DICK HASENPFLUG is looking for volunteers who can write to help put information on the Rotary AIDS Website and ALEX NG removed the red sticker from SHELLY POTVIN'S badge and we all stood up to welcome her as a Blue Badge Rotarian.

The country of the week was Singapore, and KAILAS CHIDAMBARAM told us all about the hub of Southeast Asia. The most populated area of the world, Singapore has 4 million people and 1 million quest workers. They speak English in Singapore and Kailas said it is a clean country that is crime free and an example to other countries. It also has 12 Rotary Clubs where we can make-up if we ever visit Singapore.

KAREN FOX, just back from Russia, introduced Alexei Krylovs as the 2001-2002 Youth Exchange Rotary scholar. He is from St. Petersberg and will register at Los Altos High School next week. BOB ADAMS and his wife Lois, have volunteered to be his "American Grandparents" and they met Alexei and Karen at the San Francisco Airport.

Larry Chu, Jr. donated an IBM thinkpad computer and Alexei is doing a Russian Dance he is so happy. Karen says she is not a parent, but as host parent she is looking for fashion design help in selecting school clothes for Alexei.

Weekly fine master JOHN SINES, acknowledged the straw hat club that sits in the front because they were August birth children. GUY FARTHING, BOO BUE, MARY PROCHNOW, TRACY MURRAY, WILL CORKERN and SHELLEY POTVIN all wore August straw hats.

Finemaster John also stuck six former Rotary presidents for a $20 fine because they had a pulse. Without checking for accuracy, Sines walked away while DAN DUTTON, LARRY MADSEN, MEL KAHN, BOO BUE and SAM HARDING were checking their wrist and DICK HENNING read the pulsatic certification of appreciation. It cost each a $20 fine.

With a little extra time for the guest speaker, KRIS CASTO provided all the laudatory words necessary to introduce Lucy Carlton, the former Los Altos Chief of Police who is retiring. The new Los Altos Chief of Police, Don Johnson, was present and provided civic representation. "Lucy is one of the most honored police chiefs in California," Casto said. "Since 1969, she has received a variety of assignments and was the first female to be assigned patrol duty in California. Lucy has been a trailblazer for women in police work and a mentor"

Growing up in Santa Clara County, Carlton spent two years at Presentation High School, and earlier attended a catholic school where she was involved in petty mischief. She survived high school and enrolled at San Jose State University where finding classes are still tough. After enrolling and looking for classes on the last day and last minute of registration, she selected several law enforcement classes. While she enjoyed what she was learning, Carlton changed her major and three years later with her bachelors degree in police studies, she applied for a job in police work. Selected out of 400 other women looking for police work, Carlton started her career in the Milpitas police department. In time she was assigned to the "checks and sex" department. Police women were not allowed to go to the police academy, but by 1972, she was hitting the streets as a police woman in Milpitas. In 1974, a federal law eliminated the title police woman and police man and designated them police officers. By 1980 Carlton was promoted to Sergeant and became an officer in the Training Academy. By 1988, Carlton was promoted to police captain. The most appealing part of her career arrived in 1991 when she was appointed the Chief of Police of Los Altos.

As Carlton leaves the city, she will travel and do consulting work. She is proud to report that the Los Altos Police Department is a fully staffed police agency again. In the last months the department has another canine, two police motorcycles and worked with high profile cases. Her greatest accomplishment has been working with sexual assault cases. As Don Johnson takes over the reins of the police department, Rotarians, as well as citizens, will thank her for her accomplishments while in Los Altos.

District Governor Gayle Tully's gift from Cupertino received $45 for the Rotarian coffers from KRIS CASTO, and VICTORIA EMMONS paid $20 for a bottle of Lodi 1988 Zinfandel wine.

According to our long-time friend and past member Bob Bratman, The Festival of Wales will be held all day long August 30, 31, and September 1 and 2, at the San Jose Fairmont Hotel and San Jose Convention Center. There will be singing and competition.
James L. Sweeney, professor at Stanford, will discuss "California Energy Crisis" at the Aug. 30th meeting. Firooz suggests bringing a guest.

President's Message

Los Altos Rotary - what a great club we are! And what a privilege it is for me to be writing these few words. The experience of being your president is exhilarating and rewarding in ways that just cannot be imagined. Time and time I am amazed at the level of cooperation and dedication many of you show to Rotary ideals and the manner in which you practice the motto of "service above self." As you set higher standards in everything you do, you are bringing honor to yourself by leading the club to a higher plateau. How proud I am to be amongst you!

Guy Farthing, our Finemasters Chair, would like us to remember a few things about fining.. Fining is a sort of a tradition in Rotary. We do this to have fun and to recognize members for highlights in their lives such as promotions, birthdays, anniversaries, new cars and items for which the members have gotten community recognition. This way, the Club collects monies needed for operations, while we are learning more about our fellow members. We need everyone's help. So, snitching on your buddies is encouraged! If you know items that should be brought out during the fining session, please call or e-mail the appropriate Finemaster:

John Sines - August Finemaster
Seth Manning - September Finemaster
Cindy Luedtke - October Finemaster

Finally, mark your calendar for the Persian Night event at our house on Saturday, September 15. For only $35 you will have wine, soft drinks and a variety of Persian cuisine. You will get to watch professional Persian dancers' performance and, in addition, you will have an opportunity to show all the friends how great of a Persian dancer you could be! Come, and regardless of your skill in Persian dance, I promise you will all have a barrel of fun!

-Firooz
