MEETING OF APRIL 5, 2001

By Steve Gruber

A message from Joe Renati: On behalf of Dave Luedtke and myself, I would like to thank my wife Sandi and Cindi Luedtke for the table decos and salad and dessert, also Marty Spangler for staying all day with the cooking. Thank you also to Kurt Hammerstrom, Dan Dutton, Lee Lynch, Steve Sheppard and everyone else who helped with the clean-up and table and chair putaway.
It was a fine event.

The club thanks Joe for his hard work involved with organizing this event.

And the social events keep coming! The golf tournament will be on April 27, according to Steve Anderson. The tournament will be played at the usual "executive" links at Palo Alto Muni, followed by a barbeque at Steve's home, complete with a couple of rounds of poker afterwards.

Want more social events? We got 'em. Joanna Medin announced a family picnic on June 10, and you should invite your children and grandchildren.

Marlene Cowan announced that the red badgers fund-raiser has been matched by $11,000 in Rotary International funds, and the money will be used to help an AIDS clinic in South Africa.

Sam Harding still has a tour of the cement plant open on Tuesday. He had some concrete suggestions for those who are going: wear shoes. Good shoes for hiking. Why a visit to the cement plant? Because we heard a talk about it two weeks ago and everybody wants to know what is really going on back there in the hills.

Rich Fischer, the superintendent of the high school district, reviewed the details of a difficult month that started with the suicide of a student, was followed by two bomb threats that caused both schools to be evacuated, and then was topped off by rumors that "days of tragedy" were about to occur on campus. The background for much of this has been the shootings at the high schools in San Diego, and weapons violence that has occurred in the years since the mass murders in Colorado. The Mountain View-Los Altos solution was to involve the police departments whenever there is a hint of a problem, and to bring a small army of parents onto the campus. Thank you to Rich for taking on a sensitive and volatile subject and explaining it to us. We may not understand why school shootings occur, but we are helping to prevent them through the Partners program and Interact.

And in other news: Jerry Tomanek closed a big deal and contributed $1,000 to Polio Plus. Jerry declined to provide details about it, so we are required to speculate on exactly what this "big deal" might be. Please send your suggestions to me at sgruber@ca-trusts.com and the winner will receive free tickets to the art show . . . Dick Duhring has been married to Faith for 50 years and they will celebrate their anniversary this weekend. Dick contributed $1,000 to LAREF to make Faith a Guy Shoup Fellow . . . Gary Ross went out and bought a new Corvette, proving that the slowdown in the construction industry is a figment of your imagination . . . It is tempting to say that John Sines also bought a new car, but then you would know that my veracity is slipping. Let's say that it is a somewhat new car that is in John's driveway. Looks just like the old one, since both are Mercedes and painted a dull brown. The great thing about John is that he never reads the Rotator and won't be bothered by this item one bit . . . The Social Czar is considering a comeback with a reprise of the crab dinner and winetasting held four years ago. Who is the Social Czar? You are new in the club, aren't you . . . Julie Rose is working on a new website for the Chamber of Commerce that will feature searches for members and chat rooms. Of course, if you don't like chatting on the net, you can always go to the Chamber mixer next week and chat in real-time . . . Sam Pesner, the winemaster of the art show, has the wine all picked out for this year and it is the excellent wine from Lohr again . . . The Rotator has had some problems with various Internet Service Providers rejecting the e-mails because they are considered spam. What an insult! This stuff might be baloney, but it is not spam.

Ted Lempert, former assemblyman from San Mateo County, told us about Edvoice, which is a new grass-roots group that will be pushing Sacramento for more money for schools, less regulation of schools by the state, and better pay for teachers. He said that education has had very few proponents in the state capitol until now, unlike major corporations, environmentalists, and other lobbying groups. The group's website is at www.edvoice.net.

President's Message

The District Conference in Oakland this weekend will highlight our Rotary AIDS Project through a Forum presentation on Saturday morning. Thanks to all who are participating.

Newsflash: I have received a telephone call that Partners for New Generations will be given a District Recognition Award. It will be presented on Friday at the first conference luncheon. I look forward to bringing it back to all of you next Thursday.

Continuing thanks to Past Presidents Marge Bruno and Bob Adams for their creativity, five and six years ago. And to Cindy Luedtke, and the many others who have helped to carry the message of this important volunteer program throughout the community. Our thanks, also, to Ruth Lundquist who dedicated the Bob Lundquist Memorial Fund to Partners for New Generations. We will celebrate all of this again on April 29th, during the recognition luncheon.

See you Thursday.
Ginny
