MEETING OF APRIL 19, 2001

By Mary Prochnow

Rotarians were greeted by the pleasant sound of the piano, thanks to the talent and energy of BRUCE CANN. BRUCE also led a rousing vocal rendition of "Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag" in honor of the passing of Income Tax Day.

It was good to see FRANZ ANDERSON who led the Pledge of Allegiance.

ARIEL ROSS (Visiting with Dad, Gary as they celebrated consecutive birthdays) gave a THOUGHT FOR THE DAY on Friendship, with poise and a refreshing panache.

At the DISTRICT CONFERENCE recently our own PRESIDENT GINNY gave the thought for the day at the Saturday breakfast. When invited to do this GINNY asked Fr. BILL REWAK to share a thought. Here it is: Author ARDIS WHITMAN recalls attending her first circus. The trapeze artists filled her with awe and admiration. Suddenly she turned to her mother and said, "Aren't they afraid, Mother?"
A man sitting in a row ahead of them turned and said to Ardis, "They're not afraid. They trust one another. If any organization-circus or family or Rotary-is to succeed, if it is to work well, if our hands are to touch in mid-air and hold our hearts together, we must trust one another.
It is through trust that we accept one another's talents and good will. And it is because we trust that we ourselves are accepted.
It is through trust that we build a community.

FRANZ ANDERSON was honored with his PAUL HARRIS triple sapphire and DENNIS YOUNG was commended for having brought five new members to the Club.

SETH MANNING was fined in celebration of a current SAN JOSE BUSINESS JOURNAL article on MARILYN MANNING. Others fined or joining the President's Club includes MIKE SCHNEIDER, JANE REED, & ROB HOLDEN.

PRESIDENT GINNY introduced today's speaker; Mr. IWOA PETER SANO, who has written a book entitled 1000 DAYS IN SIBERIA about his experiences as a Japanese American POW. Mr. Sano was born in the hot desert California town of Brawley. …….
…In the summer of 1939, Mr. Sano finished high school in Brawley and was sent to Japan to be adopted by his childless aunt and uncle, as was Japanese custom. Mr. Sano became a Japanese citizen and was inducted into the army and sent to Northern Manchuria, 400 miles from Siberia where he served in a heavy artillery unit and was trained to become a 'WALKING KAMIKAZE'…. carrying a small box of explosives designed to blow up on contact. Two or three days after the war ended his unit walked back into camp, the gates closed and they became prisoners of war. Ten days later he was shipped to Siberia where he was forced to endure strenuous labor, nearly unbearable cold, lack of food, & the cruelty of the guards…Mr. Sano collapsed and was ill for five months. In some camps half of the prisoners died for lack of food. There was a lack of food for prisoners and captors alike with fighting over food distribution, prisoners going through the trash etc. Mr. Sano contracted malaria in 1948 and was repatriated to Japan. In 1952 his papers were finally worked out and he returned to the United States. This program provoked many thoughtful cross- cultural questions and brought home again the long lasting and widespread consequences of war on all sides.

NEW PROGRAM FOR NEXT YEAR: During his year as President, Firooz would like to spotlight the children (and future Rotarians) of Rotary members. Twice a month he would like a Rotarian's offspring to give a five minute talk at a Rotary meeting on what he or she is all about = vocation, avocations, interests, volunteer activities, etc. This program will be called the ROAD Show - Rotarians' Offspring Acknowledgment Day. We are targeting young adults who are on their way to independence. If you think your child is a good candidate please contact Penny Lave at STTCHWTCH@aol.com.

A MESSAGE FROM BOB ADAMS: Rotarians! We need your help! The April 26th Rotary Program will be the Partners for New Generation "thank you luncheon" for volunteers. We are asking all of our Rotarians to invite a person of your choice to this meeting as a prospective volunteer to tutor, mentor, coach or assist some student in a special way. Please bring a spouse and/or friend.

President's Message

The number of announcements made about ways to have fun, or serve the community, or have fun serving the community, was unusually high this week. It must be Spring. Thank you to everyone who is signing up to participate..

We have many Rotarians who each year, for many years, give a whole day, or even most of two days, volunteering at our art show. It takes that kind of annual commitment to make our show the success it is for the artists, the community, and the Rotary Club. We need every member's help, and that of spouses, and friends, to share the work and the fun of our show.

The funds raised during these two days from sales of art, provide the financial contributions our club then allocates throughout the following year for charitable giving, in our community and in our world,. The Los Altos Rotary Endowment Fund was formed in 1978, to manage this charitable giving.

The funds raised from sales of food and beverages go to club operations.

With our gifts of time and money, we have accomplished many wonderful things in our 52 years. It's a Los Altos Rotary Club tradition.

See you Thursday,
Ginny
