MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 7 , 2000

By Steve Gruber

Former President MARGE BRUNO presided over today's meeting as PRESIDENT GINNY's battle against bronchitis continued. GINNY said in a recent e-mail that she hopes to be at the next meeting, even if her voice has not returned.

Don Hull gave the thought for the day and Cres McFall led the song. California's 150th anniversary was celebrated, and of five Rotarians born in September in California, two were there, Mel Kahn and Victoria Emmons. Mel won a t-shirt with the California flag on it after winning the 150th anniversary quiz shown below. Mel joined the President's Club and Victoria contributed $50 in honor of her 50th birthday. Past Pres. Marge made Pres. Ginny a member of her own President's Club, as Ginny's birthday is this week. Joe O'Toole and Louise were recognized for 53 years of marriage this week.

The questions and answers for the 150th anniversary quiz were:

Which state was California when it joined the Union? 31st
Where was the first capital of California? San Jose, Monterey or Benecia? (all were capitals at one time, before Sacramento.
What is the California state motto? Eureka! (I have found it)
Where was the second Rotary club chartered in the world? San Francisco in 1908. They meet at the Marine's Memorial Club

Steve Shepherd is organizing up to two foursomes to play in the Morgan Hill Rotary Club Golf tournament on Friday, October 6 at the San Juan Oaks Golf Course. The entry fee is $175 and your check should be made payable to Morgan Hill Rotary Club. Please send Steve and e-mail response by Thursday 9/14, if you want to be included. You may then deliver or mail your check to Steve Shepherd at Bank of Los Altos, 369 S. San Antonio Road, Los Altos, CA 94022.

Menlo Park Rotary Club is sponsoring an evening event, Wednesday, Sept. 20, in Atherton, open to all bay area new and prospective members and their sponsors. RSVP by Sept. 18. For further information call John Sylvester or Ginny Lear.

ROY LAVE was our speaker today, presenting a contrary view of what we heard last week about the need for BART in this county. ROY, who is a transportation consultant, says that BART is the wrong vehicle for solving our transportation problems primarily because it costs too much. Compared to Pittsburgh's busways, for example, BART costs about 10 times more per mile to build. ROY believes that the ultimate transit for this county is 150 miles of rail and 2000 buses, and that most likely does not include BART due to its high cost.

AND IN OTHER NEWS: CRES MCFALL says a recent article in the Mercury News saying that his daughter LAUREN will be on the Olympic synchronized swimming team is not correct. Although LAUREN has been competing with the team for some time, she is hoping to be on the 2004 Olympic team. CRES, however, says he can recognize LAUREN in a VISA television ad about the Olympics that has been running, even though the participants are underwater . . . Meanwhile, STEVE GRUBER (that's me) went for a 60-mile hike in Yosemite this summer, and has been anxious for recognition. Probably no finemaster believes that I could hike that far, but I have the pictures to prove it . . . Did you know that we have a dot-com person in the club? That would be DICK HASENPFLUG, who is president of Terra Wood, an online firm that intends to make it easier to import lumber. If you want a entire container of lumber delivered to your front door, just give DICK a call . . . The Rotary Bike Club will be riding around Lake Tahoe on Sept. 22, just give ED SOX a call to reserve a spot. It's only 75 miles.

President's Message

September is "Youth Activities Month" throughout Rotary International. Over the years, Los Altos Rotary has created many opportunities for serving the youth of our area, and "back to school" gives us the chance to re-focus on them.

Three Interact Clubs, our high school youth service and leadership programs, involve Rotary Liaisons, high school adult leaders, students who are emerging leaders, and students who just want to do something useful, while having fun with their friends. A great time with young people who are ready to do new things.

Partners for New Generations has become the umbrella for our many tutoring and mentoring programs which have involved hundreds of volunteers during the past four years. Now, beginning its fifth year, it is time to look at your own schedule to see where there's an hour in your week to give to a child. Every one of us can spare an hour, and the choices are vast in where to spend that time.

Nancy Traficanti, Lois Adams, and the whole Partners for New Generations team are gearing up to let us know where we can help. If you're ready, don't wait for a formal invitation from us, just stop by your nearest school office and offer an hour of your time. They'll know where there's a need. Being of service to youth is a very rewarding activity. It keeps us all thinking young, while we share each other's perspective on the world.

See you Thursday. Ginny
