MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 14 , 2000

WRITER: MARY PROCHNOW

Substituting for our PRESIDENT was PAST PRESIDENT SAM HARDING. Unfortunately, SAM had an eleventh hour call telling him that PRESIDENT GINNY had developed pneumonia. I know that we all join together in sending PRESIDENT GINNY a bouquet of best wishes for a speedy recovery.

PIANIST and SONGMASTER, as well as a native Australian, BRUCE CANN led us in a timely rendition of WALTZING MATHILDA while informing us that it was Friday in SYDNEY and that the OLYMPICS had begun.

DI CK HASENPFLUG gave the THOUGHT FOR THE DAY. While holding a handful of bullets from the area, DICK spoke of his visit to UNA-SANA CANTON, BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA and his conversations there with people who had grown completely weary of war and fighting and hoped only that peace might come to their beautiful part of the world. AMEN

JAN SCHROEDER, a Marriage and Family Counselor, was presented her Red Badge by proud sponsor, JERRY TOMANEK. WELCOME, JAN!

MEL KAHN, MARGE GRATIOT, PAT FARRELL, ALAN SWANSON, BOB ADAMS, AND JOE O'TOOLE were welcomed to the PRESIDENT'S CLUB.

A crone cousin of LEN MCBIRNEY appeared fining Len for several occurrences. LEN and CAROLYN celebrated their 54th anniversary recently in IRELAND, today is Len's birthday and they recently celebrated the birth of their first GREAT granddaughter. Congratulations to the McBIRNEY'S.

Many other Rotarians celebrated anniversaries and birthdays and were fined accordingly. Felicitations to each of them!

If only we had gotten to the "singing web" we would here include a rendition of HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our PRESIDENT GINNY who probably didn't get too much celebrating done for her September 9th birthday.

DAN DUTTON announced that LOYOLA elementary school is looking for help for the 'after school homework club' at the school. Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. 3-4 p.m. 4th 5th and 6th graders. If you are able to help, please contact, NANCY TRAFICANTI 941-5732 or traf@ix.netcom.com.

DUDE ANGIUS was back from Washington D.C. where last week he received the CDC (Center for Disease Control) DUDE ANGIUS AWARD. The program states that the award "Honors a person who exemplifies the power of an individual when they are dedicated to an issue. The recipient demonstrates a high level of leadership and support for HIV/AIDS workplace programs and has been instrumental in driving involvement in the community, the workplace and/or among peers." This award will be given annually and to say that we are filled with pride is inadequate. Congratulations, DUDE!

TEGUCIGALPA, HONDURAS

ROY LAVE introduced WALT HAYS, a PALO ALTO ROTARIAN, mediator, and WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE VOLUNTEER. WALT HAYS shared his slides from a trip to TEGUCIGALPA, HONDURAS where the group of ROTARIANS worked on a much-needed Reforestation and Watershed Protection project in the wake of devastating HURRICANE MITCH. Simple concrete block homes have also been built in the region with Rotary help. There is some original rainforest intact in the area but, it too, is endangered by the farming methods in use. Terrace farming is being taught so as to avoid soil erosion. We were given a wonderful example of the leveraging of Rotary dollars and the amazing things that those leveraged dollars can accomplish world -wide.

On Sept 28, the club will auction a pair of tickets for the visit of Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, October 15 at 7:30 pm at the Flint Center at De Anza College. On October 19, the club will auction a pair of tickets for the performance of Mark Russell on Friday, November 10 at 8:00 pm, also at the Flint Center. Proceeds will go to LAREF.

President's Message

My September theme of "Meet Your Past Presidents" seems to be working very well. My special thanks to Marge and Sam for presiding over the past two meetings. I just know I will be there this Thursday, even if I don't speak. I'll be there to hear PETER MAGOWAN, on the Thursday before the Giants final home stand of the season, as they head into the playoffs. Bob Adams is a true visionary for arranging this one, however many months ago. I hope you'll be there, too. You don't have to be a baseball fan to appreciate what this man and his partners have accomplished.

Thanks are also in order for Mary Prochnow who became the instant Rotator reporter on Thursday. The bench strength in our club is awesome.

And speaking of the Rotator, a new statement will now be added to every issue, similar to that which is in our club directory.

"Information in this newsletter is intended for the exclusive use of the members of the Rotary Club of Los Altos to facilitate the work of the club and to promote club fellowship. It is not to be used for any commercial or outside non-profit purposes. No publication of material in this newsletter should occur without the express permission of the club President or the Editor of the Rotator."

I hope this statement will be understood and useful to all in the future.

See you Thursday. Ginny
