MEETING OF OCTOBER 19, 2000

By John Sines

YORKTOWN REDUX
CRES McFALL, songleader extraordinaire, led the assembled peanut gallery in a stirring rendition of YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, sung by the soldiers who won the Battle of Yorktown on this date in history. That victory assured the survival of what became the United States. Doubtless CRES was reminded of General Washington, the commanding general of the Thirteen Colonies, as he experienced the three recent debates between Mr. Gore and Mr. Bush.

ROSES ARE FOR SMELLING
JEAN NEWTON admonished us all to take the time to smell the roses. JEAN, which button on my cellphone is the rosesmeller? Perhaps it's a button on my laptop.

LAREF
JERRY TOMANEK auctioned off two tickets for Mark Russell's appearance at the Celebrity Forum to MIKE SPENCE, who made a generous bid of $100. The proceeds of the auction will benefit LAREF.

RED BADGES OF COURAGE
JOAN ROSELLE and BRIAN WARD received their red badges. Welcome aboard!

THE PRESIDENT IS COMING! THE PRESIDENT IS COMING!
PREZGINNY reminded us that Rotary's President, FRANK J. DEVLYN, will address the Rotary world at a dinner at the Doubletree Inn on January 3 for $42 per. Contact GINNY immediately if you would like to be there.

BASEBALL OF THE YEAR
EXPREZADAMZ will auction off a baseball next week. It is signed by all Giants on the Western Division Championship team and was given to us by Peter Magowan.

VERITAS
HARDY JONES, local artist, is on the cover of the Harvard Medical School alumni magazine. One of his sculptures is the centerfold. Congratulations, HARDY!

HEAR THE ROSES
You can't smell the roses while talking on the cellphone. So PREZGINNY fined GARY ROSS a punitive sum when his cellphone's buzzer went off. This should be a lesson to all of us, especially STEVE ANDERSON!

OLD MAN OF THE TUNDRA
JACK HEIDMILLER turned 70 and brought back the ROTARY SONGBOOK from Canada, where he and his teenage bride vacationed. Must have run into JEANETTE McDONALD and NELSON EDDY on one of those lakes.

INTERNET EBOLA
STEVE GRUBER has recently received birthday greetings on the internet from the four corners of the earth.

KAHN'S PHARMACY
MEL KAHN announced the closing of Kahn's Pharmacy, which his parents opened 60 years ago. It will close for good on November 4. MEL says his landlord is not to blame for the closing.

TODAY'S PROGRAM
County Supervisor JOE SIMITIAN and DEBORAH WILDER fielded hot grounders and complicated questions as they sought to argue why he, or she, should represent us all in the the 21st Assembly District. Joe has been on the Board of Supervisors for four years and Deborah has been serving on the Foster City Council.

President's Message

Next week we begin our annual club focus on The Rotary Foundation. While contributions are welcomed throughout the year, from now through the first of January, there will be a special emphasis on TRF fundraising. Seth Manning is our Foundation Chair this year. We hope each member will contribute something to this effort. All donations are tax deductible, and 60% of the funds we contribute come directly back to our club, to match programs that we choose to support through our World Community Service.

A Sustaining Contribution of $100, or a Double Sustaining Contribution of $200 is encouraged. Paul Harris Fellows are those members who give a total of $1,000 and more. This distinction can be achieved at once, or totaled over a number of years. Our club has 91 Paul Harris Fellows, 71 club members and 20 family members. We strive to increase our participation this year. We hope you will ask any questions you may have about the program along the way.

As a bonus, each $10 donation brings a chance to win a New York Theatre Extravaganza for two. ($100=10 chances; $200=20 chances) Second prize is a trip for two to San Antonio (Good luck, Firooz!) Tickets will be distributed to each member. These prizes will be awarded on January 10, 2001, at the District Cabinet meeting. I will be in attendance on your behalf.

Also next week there will be spirited bidding in the auction for the 2000 Giants team autographed baseball. Proceeds will go to LAREF, our club's own foundation.

Remember that on November 9, flu shots will be available at the meeting. Your generous donation to the RotaCare Clinic in Mountain View will be most gratefully received that day. As you may know, flu shots are in limited supply this year, and arriving later than usual. We are very fortunate to have Ben McGann making these arrangements for us. Here's to good health. See you Thursday, Ginny
