Executive Director Tom Meyers will be our guest and say a few words about
this program. Rotary Gives Thanks.

PHIL ROSE led the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE to begin the meeting. AL TRAFICANTI expressed the thought for the day. He suggested carrying gratitude to the next outward expression; THANKSGIVING. AL suggested that a good starting point for THANKSGIVING would be to express one's thanks to that individual who was your Rotary sponsor. THANKS, DENNIS!

RICK GLAZE led us in the singing of HARVEST MOON.

PRESIDENT-ELECT FIROOZ GHAFFARI introduced visiting ROTARIAN JIM SPANGLER from Mountain View and our many visitors.

Those who neglected to bring their ballot stubs were duly fined.

SAM HARDING asked for a count of those willing to have blood drawn as a first step toward the possibility of being a bone marrow donor. This would involve no cost to the potential donor.

News came to us that ERIN DAWSON our Rotary scholar in Taipei, Taiwan has been named a feature writer for the CHINA POST. Bill Sun, an active member of Los Altos Sister Cities facilitated this appointment. ERIN spoke to us on a couple of occasions and we hope to be able to see some of her feature stories.

MONA ARMISTEAD made an announcement about the HOLIDAY PARTY to be held at the EL RETIRO JESUIT RETREAT CENTER. FR. BILL REWOK is reportedly going all out to make this a memorable event. It is a COCKTAIL BUFFET; the cost is $30.00 per person. Please RSVP to Julie Rose.

MARGE GRATIOT thanked the Club voters for their support of Measure E. The school bond continuation passed with 76% of the vote. (In the spirit of THANKSGIVING …thanks to Marge for showing us over and again what an excellent Superintendent can do!)

President GINNY levied fines for Birthdays and Anniversaries……. WYATT celebrated both…He and Alisanne recently celebrated 12 years of marriage. STEVE and KATHY ANDERSON celebrated the first of their anniversaries. ROGER ENG (his son is going to be married on November 25th), BILL WALTERS & KRIS CASTO celebrated birthdays.

SETH MANNING offered his thoughts on supporting the ROTARY FOUNDATION. SETH called his contribution "Money used by like-minded people in a non-political, non- religious way for the good of many. Money given to the ROTARY FOUNDATION is money well spent." This is the month…I f you have questions about your Foundation account contact WYATT ALLEN.

Don't forget to bring your unwrapped toys to the next few meetings for the young clients of CSA. Suggestions include; learning toys, books, dolls, sports equipment, watches, backpacks, cars, trucks & gift certificates.

Special message from BOB ADAMS: Come to Rotary this week and preview the menu for "Volunteer Opportunities" offerred by Partners for New Generations at the PNG Cafe. Bring a guest, as we are looking for potential new volunteers. Thanks Bob Adams

RAP met following the meeting. Please be sure to attend on November 30th and listen to ways that you can participate in new RAP projects as well as celebrate what has been accomplished to date.

ROY LAVE introduced DANE STARK of PAGE MILL WINERY, who was the day's speaker. ROY commented that DANE'S naming of one of his wines as "RUN OF THE MILL WHITE' demonstrated both whimsy and humility. DANE stared his career after graduating from UC in 1989 and took over the winery when his Dad retired five years ago. DANE has increased production from 1500 to 3000 cases annually.

He operates from a cellar under the house on Page Mill Road and makes 14 different wines. He buys grapes from vineyards located from Sonoma to Santa Barbara. DANE uses a basket press and 30 pound lug boxes when harvesting to protect the delicate fruit. 80% of his sales are within ten miles of the vineyard to visitors (many Club members) and restaurants. His goal is the same as that of his father: to be judged in the top one- third at tastings and to be priced in the bottom third.

DANE recommended a visit to the TONNELLERIE FRANCAISE COOPERAGE in Calistoga for an interesting return to an ancient craft. DANE stated that the wood of the barrels does affect the taste of the wine. He uses French and American oak, and actually pairs the wood from particular forests in France with particular grapes for the best possible wine.

Appropriate to ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH, DANE raved about his experience with a GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE to France in the spring of 1999. The district selects four business people and they are sent to spend four weeks in another district. Dane's group of winemaker's went to Burgundy after having hosted four Burgundians here. Dane's fluent French, picked up as a college exchange student, enriched his experience. He stayed 3-4 days in several different areas and urged all to continue their support of this wonderful cultural exchange.

President's Message

"Service Above Self" will be demonstrated next week when Partners for New Generations presents a special program on the many opportunities available to serve the youth of our community and will highlight members and friends of Rotary who are already involved. There is always room for more. Your gift of time and interest to these children adds value both to their education and to their sense of self worth. It is an honor to be part of such rewarding service.

Our coordinator of volunteers for the elementary schools, Honorary Rotarian Nancy Traficanti, received a phone call this week from Linda Echols, Principal at Loyola School. Ms Echols wanted to express to Nancy, her appreciation of the Rotary volunteers that are giving their time to help at the school. At Loyola, those volunteers are John Moss and Alex Ng, helping with reading; Ed Sox, Roland Payne, and community member Carita Klevickis, in the After School Homework Club; and Lee Lynch, in the First Grade. We also thank them.

Please remember to make your donation to The Rotary Foundation now. Each week we highlight the breadth of the work accomplished with your contributions. This week, Dane Stark, a member of the 1999 GSE team to France, was our speaker, and Erin Dawson, our current Ambassadorial Scholar in Taipei is reported to be doing well in her new surroundings. Both people involved in programs sponsored by The Rotary Foundation. The November Rotarian Magazine is also filled with information about The Rotary Foundation. There won't be a quiz, but you'll find the information very interesting and timely. See you Thursday. Ginny
