MEETING OF NOVEMBER 2, 2000

By Clyde Noel

After the usual patriotic duty of acknowledging the grand old flag, we sang JOHN SYLVESTER'S motivational selection of "You are my sunshine." PEGGY BUCHANON's thought for the day provided us with a slew of obstacles we meet in life, but, "You have to be grateful and gratitude is necessary in life."

President GINNY announced that flu shots will be postponed because of a scarcity of vaccine. The flu shots might be available on Nov. 16 or Nov. 30.

Rotarians were provided with a view of the French countryside by Oliver Criou, a one-year ambassadorial scholar, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Nimes. "As we say in France, 'The Worst is Always a Certainty,' but I hope we can be friends." Criou said.

Former Rotary member Jim Quinn, now a member of Pacific Grove Rotary, paid us a visit and invited us to the Monterey Peninsula. GARY ROSS became a blue badger after MEL KAHN sponsored him because he was a good guy and completed Mel's buildings on Main Street. JANE REED, FIROOZ GHAFFARI, BUD OLIVER AND MEL KAHN received gifts from GINNY for hosting the recent progressive dinner.
Rotarian coffers were increased by BEN McGANN's contribution, GEORGE ESTILL gave $42 for his 42nd anniversary even though was last July, and LAYNE LONG became extravagant when he gave $15, even though he has been married only nine years. MEL and MADY KAHN contributed to the Rotary Foundation and now their sons, Matthew and Brandon, are Paul Harris Fellows.

Birth Announcement: FRANCIS LA POLL announced he became a father for the sixth time on October 18.

BOB ADAMS reminds everyone that the program on Nov. 16 will be presenting volunteer opportunities for Rotarians and their invited guests. Please give some serious thought to bringing a guest who is a potential volunteer for tutoring, mentoring, coaching, etc.

DICK DUHRING introduced the speaker, Sharon Williams, executive director of OICW (Opportunities Industrialization Center West) in Menlo Park.
OICW started in Philadelphia, and today it graduates 4,000 students a year and 93 percent are placed in paying jobs. The organization tries to place people in the technology field because of the demand for workers. OICW provides job training, counseling and job placement services, teen programs, evening and weekend classes, and child care (toddler and preschool).

Stephany Gutierrez is an example of how an underprivileged and single mother who is a graduate of the program. She told us how she went through OICW training and today has a high paying job and stock options with a Dot-Com. Rotary has supported OICW for many years and Williams said it is wonderful example for people to get organized and changing a life into productivity. OICW is run by full time and part time workers and volunteers who make it happen. In January, they will open an Oracle Academy to train individuals for the technology field. 4,000 students have gone through the program and currently 800 students are enrolled in three different class levels.
